Yeah, this album just came out of nowhere in '69 and blew everyone's mind. The genius of Pete Townsend, not only single-handedly writing it from the ground up, but creating the genre 'rock opera', and not in a weak, soppy pop star way trying to be clever, but genuinely a major cohesive piece of work, that we're still appreciating today.

The double album was 29.90 DeutschMark. I made 85 DM a month! 1969. No wonder i still have it. The movie came later, as you mentioned.

I'm in total agreement, Guys. I remember when it first was released. KMPX in San Francisco played the entire double album without interruption. It almost got that DJ fired since he failed to play any commercial breaks. I was so blown away by this album, I rushed out to buy it at our local music store. I still have that vinyl. I had already been a big fan of The Who. When they played Monterey I was in high school, so I couldn't pull off a way to travel 3 hours or so to get there. We all loved "Magic Bus". So when this album hit the stores, we all had to have it.

@@howarddickson8727 Leonard Bernstein saw Tommy in New York at the Fill ore East and loved it. Bernstein called the album "a powerful performance that outstrips anything that has ever come out of a recording studio.” He saw Pete Townshend after the concert and said “Pete, do you realize what you’ve done?” He recognized the genius behind “Tommy” and it inspired him to write “Mass”.😁

I liked Tommy, but Quadrophenia (and the tune, Naked Eye) is what turned me into a Who fan. In '75, I turned 18, graduated HS, and could buy beer. I saw Jaws and the Frampton "Comes Alive" tour in the summer, but the highlight of the year was seeing The Who with Mooney in November. Great year! I saw the Tommy tour twice in '89 and once again in the early 2000s, before John passed. RIP Mooney and John. Thank You!

There is a great video with a live recording of Tommy at the amphitheater in Los Angeles from 1989. It's The Who with many guest artists such as Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Elton John, Steve Winwood and Patti LaBelle (as the Acid Queen), as well as 12 back-up musicians (among which 5 horns and 3 back-up singers). Simon Philips on drums did an amazing job. Easily my favorite live version of Tommy. Something for a future consideration?

As for Keith Moon & his fills, I heard someone say about the Who that they were all paying lead on their songs. Because of this they sound so huge. When Keith Moon died, the Who added more instruments to the band because Pete Townsend said without Moon they didn't sound as big on stage as they used to.

This album was a turning point for the band. Before this, they were great, but more oriented towards R&B flavoured Rock. Apparently, at the beginning of recording this album, Roger Daltrey saw something in the character and asked Pete Townshend if he could BE Tommy for the album. It gave Daltrey insight into really feeling what he was singing instead of just letting it out. In addition, the whole project was so ambitious from Townshend's point of view that he found he'd unconsciously elevated his game well beyond the prevailing singles market. With both front men pushing themselves harder, it meant Moon and Entwistle could begin to really let loose and show their incredible talent and creativity. Tommy paved the way for Who masterpieces like Who's Next.

The album was a genius idea by Pete Townsend and the movie could not not come close to the impact that this album had on rock fans and artists of that era. My older brother took me to the New York City Ballet which performed Tommy as a a musical and dance story when I was 10 years old only a year or 2 after this album came out. It was amazing and so unexpected yet eye opening!

Pete Townshend wrote it all, John Entwistle's french horn playing on the last track I feel elevated the level of the music greatly, it just added so much. And to think they made this with little or no outside help and you're talking three musicians, Pete on guitar, John on bass and keith on drums. Totally unreal for 1969.

Love your reactions, guys, great job as usual!! I have the vinyl LP, saw the movie in '75 and saw it performed on stage in about 1996 or so, and all were excellent! Funny thing about "Pinball Wizard". There was this British music critic they played the LP for prior to release and he told the band he couldn't give it his best score without a song about pinballs or something. Pete wrote the song that night and recorded it the next day and the rest is history!!

It's probably been said already guys, but the Tommy album was released in 1969. A full 6 years before the movie. The Who toured the album extensively throughout 1969 and 1970, playing it almost in It's entirety on-stage. Great stuff guys, once again.

Man, La and Che thank you for getting back to this and really listening to this work. One of the things I always loved about the Who was that they championed the emotions, anxieties and triumphs of young people trying make sense of the twisted world they're thrown into. There is a lot of dark stuff going on in this work and they do it so beautifully. Side 4 coming up and it's a doozy. There is a competitor for 1st Rock opera which is 1968s The Pretty Things " S.F. Sorrow" LP that follows an ordinary man born in the 19th Cent. starting from birth, childhood, young man to WW 1 and it's aftermath up until his death as an old man. Tommy is much more solid and higher in stature but SF Sorrow is very cool and interesting. Thanks fellas, keep healthy and much love from Spain.

When you think about that who are the worldly four members. One of them was a singer only. Well, he did play a harmonica and symbols. But what I’m getting at is only three instrument play in members. One guitar a bass and drums. Amazing sound put out by those three guys. But look who the guys were. John Entwhistle, Pete, Townshend, and Keith Moon. Each one a great and their own right.

Original album (that you're listening to) came first. Then they toured the album (occasionally with a few other Who songs). The flamboyant, halluciantory and occasionally bombastic move version came years later (directed by the flamboyant, hallucinatory and occasionally bombastic Ken Russell). After that came the movie soundtrack album with guest artists (but unfortunately with more commercial gloss to the music). Years later revived on Broadway without the band (but under supervision of Townsend). The original album is, and always will be, the classic version.

LP about 6 years before the film. The film doesn't follow the LP story exactly. Tommy was innovative and, among other things, explored Townshend's deeply sublimated experience of by and equivalent of an Uncle Ernie. He praised and thanked John Entwistle for writing a few songs that he couldn't for psycho-emotional reasons. He wasn't expecting Roger Daltrey to sing much of it but arrived late to a session when Roger was running through some of the songs and was blown away his new vision of Daltrey inhabiting the character and the song with the depth of a seriously great actor. The Who had an earlier go at a short operetta on their previous LP, A Quick One, While He's Away. Their manager had challenged Townshend to have a go at opera and Tommy is both a weird story to match any of the classic operas and equals classic operas in complexity of ideas and drama. I was a fraction too young for it so didn't discover The Who for myself till Who's Next and the singles LP, Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy. Quadrophenia came next. It's a more straightforward story and I wasn't the only one to be slightly disappointed when it came out but, as for many others, it grew on me. It was also made into a film with the film having a different twist to the story which works well.

Also you guys need to listen to one of the best live albums in rock history Live at Leeds sadly no video exists that I’ve ever seen. Be sure to get one of the extended versions a lot of cool Tommy stuff kind of takes it to another level with the classic Who live touch. Young Man Blues off this album is just a sick assault on all of your senses. Great homage to the “jazz sage” (as Pete says) Mose Allison.

Great pick guys - this music is now 55 years old but is surely standing up as a great listen. I was 16 when it came out and got transfixed by it. I had to keep stealing it from my older brothers room until he relented and gave me his by now weather beaten copy. Been a lifelong Who fan ever since. Saw them live here in London countless times. Always a brilliant, high energy show. We were spoilt in those two decades (60's and 70's) - you could see Brit bands - The Stones, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Camel, Ten Years after, Wishbone Ash, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, Small Faces, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Dire Straits, Rory Gallagher (Irish band) and many more quite regularly - never saw the Beatles to my lasting regret You guys are helping keep some of this very worthwhile music alive. It is, some of it at least, the new 'classical' music. Rock on as they used to say...

Movie came out at least 5 years after the album. We used to read lots of album liner notes, reviews by critics and poured over the lyrics to try and get what was going on. Tommy was also performed as live theater before the movie was released.

Louis, I would definitely call Hair a musical, as I would also Jesus Christ Superstar... tagging them rock operas by some was done retrospectively. The very first time I heard the term 'rock opera' was at Tommy's release from the music press at the time.

I was exposed to Tommy as a seven-year-old. My older sisters were crazy about it, so naturally I was intrigued. Forgot all about it until high school when Who Are You came out. This is the same band that did Tommy? Wow! Then the Kids Are Alright movie came out hooked me good. Watched it numerous times at the midnight movies as a double feature with Quadrophenia. Wow, that was an album first too?! Baba OReily, Behind Blue Eyes, and ... wait for it ... Won't Get Fooled Again is the same band?! Crazy. Empty Glass? Wow. A decade later I married my high school sweetheart and we have two autistic boys, one of whom is non-verbal. It's Hard, so hard. Art helps. Try listening to REM's - The Great Beyond imagining it is your son singing to you.

Nice reactions to Tommy Side 3. To answer your ? : Tommy was released in 1969 , the Who performed the "See Me, Feel Me"" medley @ Woodstock. I think it next was performed in London's Theater as world's first Rock Opera. Then made into a film in 1975 by Ken Russell, British avant- garde director who probably saw it on a London stage (?) Believe me the Who /Pete Townsend called it a Rock Opera, he saw a stage potential. If you asked Townsend he'd never imagined this as a film. IMHO

If you check out The Who live at Tanglewood that's here on KZbin, I was the sound tech for Bill Graham Productions. The video goes off abiut half way through the performance, but I'm proud to say my audio remains good. In that live concert, they do their last live performance of Tommy. Seeing this live is 1000 times better than the LP in my opinion. They also give it a good bash at Woodstock. Mesmerizing! ✌️

Hey La and Chi, love your reactions. I think Tommy might be considered the first rock opera. That was Pete Townsends brilliance, to conceive and compose a complete dramatic story in album form. Album first 1969, movie adaptation 1975. Roger Waters and Pink Floyds the Wall was the same way. Album concept and creation first in 1979 and movie later adapted in 1882.

There's actually 3 Tommy's of impact between 1969-1975. 1. Tommy by the Who (1969); 2.Tommy - LSO (1972) 3. Tommy The Movie (1975). 1. Is truly just The Who; 2. You have The London Symphony Orchestra as the main feature with participation's of Roger Daltry (as Tommy), John Entwistle (as Cousin Kevin), as well as Ritchie Havens (the preacher), Ringo Starr (as Uncle Ernie), Rod Stewart (as the Pinball Wizard), Merry Clayton (as the Acid Queen) and so on. Lastly, 3. is the movie soundtrack with all four Who members plus a plethora of musicians seen in the film or not.

THE DEEPER MEANING according to Pete Townshend: Basically a story about a spiritual awakening. In Meher Baba's teachings (Pete’s Guru), the mirror represents the ego or the false self, while the SOUL is the TRUE SELF. The mirror is a symbol of the mind and its tendency to reflect only the external, superficial aspects of reality. This is expressed by Tommy throwing away his moms jewelry then later cleansing her in the ocean baptism style, telling the bikers not to smoke pot or drink if they want to reach the purely spiritual state of nirvana. They wanted him to help them find God but later rejected him because the parents hypocritical stance. Baba believed that the universe is composed of vibrations and frequencies, and that everything in the universe, including human beings, is a manifestation of these vibrations; And that these vibrations arise from the same source and are therefore interconnected. That everything in the universe is in a state of constant vibration and change, and that these vibrations are what give rise to the ILLUSION of SEPARATION and duality. Tesla hinted at this too. In Pete’s words: “Tommy’s real self (the one in the mirror) represents the aim (God) and the illusory self (the physical Tommy) is the teacher; life, the way, the path and all this. (The physical is illusory to the soul). The coming together of these are what make him aware. They make him see and hear and speak so he becomes a saint who everybody flocks to. The offshoot of this was that Tommy experienced the world through the vibrations of a pinball machine, which would figuratively be reflected in the vibrations of music”…”Tommy feels everything simply as rhythms and vibration”. “In general terms, man is regarded as living in an unreal world of illusory values that he’s imposed on himself. He’s feeling his way by evolution back to God - realization and the illusion is broken away, bit by bit. You need the illusions until you reach very pure saintly states. When you lose all contact with your illusory state, you become totally dead - but totally aware. You’ve died for the last time. You don’t incarnate again; you don’t do anything again - you just blend. It’s the realization of what we all intellectually know - universal consciousness - but it’s no good to know until you can actually realize it”.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned but for me Eyesight to the Blind is the song that clearer better in the movie than on the album. Clapton is just a badass in that scene/song. I also love how Pete and Ox are sort of the ushers/guards with their guitars going up and down if I’m remembering right. Ned to watch your movie reaction. … and I’ve always loved Ann-Margret!

The album was unquestionably first. It was literally conceived as an opera, It was HUGELY successful and the movie was made a through j) to cash in on the album's popularity and k) to make more clear things that were inferred or obscure on the album.

Tommy is a masterpiece. But you should listen to Who's Next, one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Tommy is a Rock Opera. It was written to be performed live in an opera house by the band, so yes itis a musical score, but not for a film. The opera was released in 1969 and that abomination of a film was made in 1975. I won't watch the film, because the versions of the songs are so inferior to what is on the album. I may be the only one, but I loved the album andI hated the film versions of the songs. Watching Elton John doing "Pinball Wizard" was painful when compared to the original.

I don't know if you guys have read the extensive liner notes that came with the Tommy album. It's not a clear telling of the story but it goes a long way to explaining what's going on.

The album came first, but Pete wrote it as a "Rock Opera". It was later decided to become a movie. So while Che is right, that it sounds like a score, it more of a biography of Pete's life growing up. He was abused, but pretended not to hear it or see it or speak of it. He later became an abuser of the same kind. Classic abuse story. Rock Operas included Tommy and later Quadrophenia. Keith, La, was the king of fills- to be sure. Pete disliked all the fills but couldn't ever get Keith to change his style, leaving him to be known as one of the great rock drummers of all time.

I'm sorry - he "became an abuser of the same kind"? I must've missed that, unless you're speaking of the online image access issue, which - without condoning his actions - is not quite the same as what I understand he suffered as a child.
