Yes, she did. I saw the WHO, with an All-STAR cast in support, perform Tommy at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1989 and Patty sang the role of the Acid Queen. @@tomenrico6199

Producers are just a another type of musician. Musicians don't just play cause they love it. They almost have to do it, in a weird perspective.

A couple of points of note. First, the abuse in the album is based on Townshend's real-life experiences. He was abused as a child. His maternal grandmother denied him food and held his head underwater in a tub at the age of six. Some years later he was even sexually abused by two scout leaders at a camp for kids, thus Tommy being beaten and abused by his uncle, and his visit to a camp. And let's not forget the abuse by the Acid Queen (played by Tina Turner in the movie). Also, you said that this was different from the earlier Who, and for good reason. At one point, he was at a Holiday Inn when he believed that he heard the voice of God. He also had an out-of-body experience on a plane, saying that he felt himself floating and looked down at his body in the seat below him, thus the spiritual aspect of Tommy. Townshend is one unusual, tormented, and inspired artist. Genius never comes easy to those who possess it.

You nailed it. Tommy is a classic rock masterpiece and one that came from a great deal of shame and anger from Townshend. He rightly so felt rage and hurt by what happened to him and channeled into one of the best pieces of rock music ever produced. You can feel it not just in the writing but the music itself is so expressive of Townshend's thoughts/feelings about what happened to him growing up.

I’ve suggested it a few times on here, but they went for the rock opera first, which makes sense and is cool and all, though I feel it’s a bit too clean overproduced compared to the absolute explosive overthetop fury of Live at Leeds DELUXE. Overall, I think it’s better they started here.. knowing that if they ever do venture through LAL DLX it’s gonna completely blow em back in their seats. The songs with the two “Sparks” interludes are just phenomenal (“My Generation” and most especially, for me, “Amazing Journey”!).. whereas, “Sparks” here is really nice, but falls a bit flat, and really feels kinda uneventful in comparison. On one of the other threads months back, I suggested LAL DLX and the other guy was shooting me down saying Deluxe was unnecessary, claiming the original was enough, but I wholly disagree with this notion, as since the release of the deluxe full concert, the original single LP release seems incredibly lacking in its omissions.

You should really listen to "My Generation" on the Live at Leeds album. It is a medley that includes several songs, or parts of songs, from Tommy, and it rocks hard. You might want to listen to the entire "Live at Leeds" album.

Pete Townshend was just 23 years old when he wrote Tommy. The Tommy album escalated The Who from a nice pop band from London into international superstar rock Gods when it was released. And as great as the Tommy album is, in my opinion, Quadrophenia is even better. It was release about 4 years after Tommy, but you can notice how much each member of the band progressed in their musicianship and singing in those 4 years. You're seeing the metamorphosis of The Who into their peak, overwhelming, pure form. Townsend said that they played Tommy with a passion and commitment that transformed The Who into a juggernaut. Live At Leeds was recorded in the same period and likewise The Who are astonishingly powerful and transcendent. It's widely regarded as one of the best live albums. You're my favorite reactors, and what a joy it is to see you listen to the fundamental music of my youth. All the best.

BTW, in the 1990s Pete Townshend and the rest of the band (but mostly Pete) created this as a Broadway show, which I saw, and it was terrific--not onl,y did they have a full orchestra in the orchestra pit in front of the stage, but also a 5 piece rock band--guitar, drums, bass, keyboards--really killer--won a lot of Tony Awards. Hoping they do a revival soon and maybe you guys could then see it.

Guys, if you check out any of the live video clips of The Who performing the songs from TOMMY during 1969-70, it adds another dimension to the material, as The Who were an entirely different beast on-stage. The movie is great, but of the 3 different versions of TOMMY, the movie version comes in third behind them playing it live, then the original album. It's still worth a look though.

What makes this whole album so great is that it is the first rock opera with the genius storytelling through the music by Pete Townsend!The album is much more creative than the movie was. The movie was more about accentuating the music by some all star rock stars telling in an obtuse way the story!My older brother took me to see the New York City Ballet perform this story in Manhattan back in 1970 when I was only 20 years old. I became a WHOLE fan for life from then on!

What you should really check out is a performance from 1989 in California. It might have been a benefit concert. The drummer they had at the time, Simon Phillips, will knock your socks off! They also had guest performers: Steve Winwood was the hawker, Patti Labell was the acid queen (and stole the show), Phil Collins was wicked Uncle Ernie, Billy Idol was cousin Kevin, and Elton John was the pinball wizard!

Such an amazing and one of a kind rock opera. The album is amazing but wait till you see the movie! Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John, Ann Margaret. You see exactly the story behind what caused Tommy's afflictions, how he came thru, became a hero then, like all of them, was turned on. Very touching, gripping & it highlighted the abuse nobody dared speak of back then. Love you guys! You have such respect, don't talk thru it (or sing along) & your observations are excellent. Just imagine a group of rock musicians in their early 20s thinking, hey, let's write an opera--a rock opera--about a deaf, dumb and blind kid with otherworldly pinball skills and lets just see where we go from there. Then they had to fight their record company to do it--hey, in the 60s, following the lead of, who else, The Beatles, bands would follow their artistic senses and say to record companies, "take it or effing leave it, we're running this show, now." The ones who did this all inevitably point to The Beatles who did just that, and had the juice to do it. "Hey, why not us?"

FYI: The movie too is a rock opera. In other words, instead of normal conversation, people burst in song. Its a musical directed by Ken Russell who became somewhat renown for "Tommy - The Movie" and "Lisztomania" a film about 19th-century composer Franz Liszt and also starring Roger Daltrey.

Another aspect of this story is that parts of it parallel aspects of the life of an Indian guru, Meher Baba, who Pete Townsend followed. Another Who song "Baba O'Riley" refers to him and avant garde keyboardist Terry Riley. Meher Baba went through an awakening experience, brought on by an encounter with a mystic, where he was made temporarily almost comatose, and out of contact with the ordinary world (deaf, dumb, and blind). When he regained regular consciousness, he seemed like a different person, and had all of these spiritual teachings said to have been acquired in that other dimension. Parts of the Tommy story, written by Townsend, resemble the guru's story.

The movie is a very 70’s movie. I am not a big fan of the movie. The Who is one of my favorite bands of all time. I am 56 now got this album when I was about 13. Loved it ever since.

The movie definitely kept some of the more controversial parts out for obvious reasons but it still holds up if only for all of the musical and movie stars in it and the phenomenal jobs they did with singing the band's songs.

Hmm, this reminds me of the Metallica song One, that's based off of an independent film from the 70s called Johhny Got His Gun. It's about a boy who goes off to war and loses his 4 limbs and his whole face. I think he can only hear and feel but can't communicate at all with the outside world. That shit is like Twilight Zone/Black Mirror. I think it is available to watch on KZbin for free. And the song is pretty good too, as someone who isn't a metal fan in general.

This is a guess, but I think most of the people who love this so much have also heard it live. That's a different ball game. So if you are on the fence about this one, I would suggest listening or/watching it live circa 1969-73. The Isle of Wight Festival 1970 is good.

The movie is not a masterpiece (The album is, especially for being sort of revolutionary, altho, yeah, "Underture" gets a little "indulgent" or whatever), but it's damned entertaining. Jack Nicholson's in it. Tina Turner plays "The Acid Queen." Roger Daltrey (singer) plays Tommy really well, and yes, the Cousin Kevin and other type scenes are fairly disturbing, but bearable. Elton John sings a song in it, in outrageous Elton fashion. Sexy Ann Margaret has a cameo, and you'll never think about baked beans the same way again!

OK, I'm back from speed re-watching some of Tommy, lol. It's STILL not a masterpiece, imo, but not only is it "damned entertaining" as I said above, but quite moving, really, and just wildly good and great in some parts! The director has a "VISION." ANd "sexy Ann Margaret" has much more than a cameo, she plays Tommy's mother, and is amazing in the role (Well, of course!). The songs are all sung and played differently. A true "Musical." Not one spoken word. Brilliant stuff.

I know that lots of people are telling you to watch the movie version and others the live anniversary show. The movie is a trip (basically everything directed by Ken Russell is) and I’ve always felt that the live version was a bit overblown and uneven. But, they’re all worth checking out as long as you keep in mind that even though they’re both based on the same source they are very different from the original album. I agree that Keith Moon as “Uncle Ernie” and Tina Turner as “The Acid Queen” both make the movie worth your while. I’ve been a fan of this album since it came out in 1969 (I was in high school).
