The XM5's in my experience, requires custom tuning on the Sony Headphones app, and the Wavelet app AutoEQ to make it sound really good. Reddit has good suggestions on how to tune the EQ. The default sound really could have been done better by Sony.

Wavelet's AutoEQ is the best thing. I like the neutral sound it provides and I'm very happy with the headphones. The other features make it such a good choice. I do miss the option to pair via NFC but everything else is just amazing

I’ve had the Max’s for about one year. I only use them in private. If I go out I use AirPods Pro 2’s. I have Raptic stands that put them to sleep on my desk and one in the bathroom. I also have a co2crea hard case for travel that also puts them into low power mode. The sound quality is amazing. The ANC is very good and the transparency mode is excellent too. If I wear them out I feel like I’m flashing money in public and asking to get targeted. I just use them to listen to music, talk on the phone and watch loud movies when it would bother other family members. Works seamlessly with Apple TV’s Apple Watch, iPhones, and MacBook Pro’s so it’s one of my favorite Apple devices.

As a Samsung phone user but a Mac user those little perks from the AirPods Max over the Sony WH-1000XM5 don't translate to the extra $150 price tag. You're also forgetting the how that case provides very minimal protection for the AirPods when traveling in a bag. Thanx for the awesome review!! keep it up

agree. I am a Samsung galaxy user for my phone but has ipad and macbook 😂 I bought both since I needed a headphone. Returned the airpod max cause the case is shit and noticeably heavier. my neck started to cramp after looking down a little.

I find this review a bit Apple fanboy-ish, but it's most likely because of a difference in preference, if anything. I personally find the AirPods Max thin and its treble less refined sounding. And its lack of customizable EQ is hopeless. XM5 EQ is good, if you know what you're doing and have the patience to tinker with it.

Ok lets be real here 95% of consumer will not notice a single difference between the two in noise cancelling and sound quality. Both are top of the class in every categories. Sony is 100 dollar cheaper which is one bonus and also lighter and more comfortable and have better case. Airpod max is feels premium because of the metal body but thats noticeably heavier and the mesh headband makes a little better. One thing I hate is the case and no button to turn off. The case is not really case, it doesn't protect anything. The mesh headband is exposed as well as the bottom part of the earcup. Personally I went with the Sony XM5 after trying both. I am willing to pay the extra $100 for the next airpod max if the next model comes with full coverage case and ability to turn the headphone off.

@@username15yearsago52 well I actually purchased a pair for sale at $479 and returned them. I found them to be uncomfortable and made my ears sweat. I also feel they are heavy and it’s noticeable especially when moving your head. The biggest takeaway was that the AirPods pro2s are 97% as good as the APMs without the $$ and discomfort. Movies were the only area where the APMs had the definitive advantage. Let’s see what gen2 brings.

The Airpod Max's case is very similar tot he iPad's Smart Folio case in that it doesn't protect the device like a case should. I don't want to buy a premuim pair of headphones or a premium tablet and not have it fully protected. For example, I have an current gen iPad with the Smart Folio case and the Apple Pencil and their is no protection around the edges of the iPad and the magnet for the Pencil easily scratches the side of the tablet leaving the iPad with two huge scratches 😬.

That’s like the only thing the xm5 have over the APM. E rethink else from build quality, sound quality and transparency mode blow the xm5 out of the water. I had the xm5 and after finally giving in and trying the APM I sold the xm5 immediately afterward. XM5 sound quality sounded flat compare to the open stage of the APM but I don’t miss the better ANc on the xm5.

I’ve had both, I honestly love both pairs, but the ease of use with all my Apple products and clarity of tracks and in general, as well as my preference to the build quality and the Digital Crown (honestly it’s so good over touch controls, especially the Sonys which can be a little hit and miss), plus the lack of home button isn’t something you’d understand if you aren’t used to it, the ease of just being able to pull them out and put them on without fiddling with a button to turn them on before putting them on or anything is amazing, but that’s a personal preference for convenience, all that made the AirPods Max are the ones for me. Which was a hard choice though as the Sonys are also incredible and I’d recommend them to anyone that isn’t in the Apple ecosystem

Totally agree. I find the Max's case useful for every day in-the-house use. I have another hard case where I can store them fully but only used once so far when I had to pack the headphones in a backpack. Love the performance but I do think the noise cancelling got a little worse with that update people are talking about... never the less, I wouldn't go back to my MX4s I use to have.

Basically. I’ve watch so many of these reviews today and basically it comes down to what devices you use the most. If you have Apple products go with the pods, if you use ANYTHING else go with the XM5. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Nice review, as always. I couldn’t disagree more about the Max’s case + lack of power button, though. Pressing a button to turn headphones on or off takes one second, at most. Even if the case is just across the room, that’s already still more of a hassle to go and grab the case in order to force the headphones to go into “low power mode”, vs. just pressing a button. Around the house, I rarely have my over-ear headphones’ case within arm’s reach, and changing that behavior sounds annoying. Not to mention the Max’s case doesn’t even protect the entirely of the headphones - I’d feel way less comfortable just shoving that into a backpack, like I do frequently with my Bose’s.

I agree I hate no power button, I need to be able to turn my headphones off, low power mode isn't gonna cut it for me. Also if you want someone to listen to your headphones you can hand them over and they can listen, vs the headphones going into low power mode every time you take them off and having to turn back on just for the other person to listen. Also how do you make a video comparing ANC head phones and not even mention the ANC quality. Also the case for the air pods doesn't protect the $549 headphones at all, and looks like a diaper or a braw.

The XM5 just can't beat the sound clarity of the Airpods Max no matter how you EQ it. The XM5 sounded like they have this layer of sound that covered the clarity of the sound, probably the lows and highs isn't that well tuned enough. Don't get me wrong, the mids of the XM5 are decent for what it is. May be it was intended for its sound signature.

I tested both just now. I have the XM5, they are overall great, but the headband hurts a little bit and my ears get hot. On the other hand, the AirPods feel better because of the broad headband with mesh, but the max' are twice the price where i live. Also, not having multipoint connectivity with AirPods max (i don't only have apple products) is kind of a dealbreaker. So for me it's a battle between multipoint connectivity and better price (XM5) vs slightly more comfort and better looks (max).

I really don't understand why none of these models support an optional boom mic accessory. Mic performance *really* matters for work calls, and the way to get decent voice quality is to put the mic closer to the mouth, period. It's not like these models have water resistance that makes them reasonable for consistent outdoor use, so why not lean into the work use case that justifies the price point?

Sennheiser probably sounds better than BOTH. Those magnetic replaceable ear cushions are genius by Apple. Transparency mode is amazing on the AirPods Pro so I know it's probably even better on the Max. 20hrs playback is definitely a weakness though. For the money they should get TWICE as much battery usage.

I am on the fence, I love the look of the AirPod Max's but that ugly damn case. It ruins the look of them, what happens if you hang them up, do they stay powered and connected? If so, that is absolutely garbage. Just add a power button, for $500 dollars you should get a power button. My current XM4's go into power save mode automatically if you put them down and reconnect when you put them on. They also have a power button!

@@foret4a874 Yes, after changing the EQ, it doesn't help much. But it was XM3, I heard XM5 is better. Anyway, I went ahead and purchased AirpodMax, and I am keeping both the Airpod Max and the M50x now. AirpodMax sounds better than XM3 for sure (for my type of songs, rock/alternative/metal). The only problem with the AirPod Max is the battery life. My M50X, I only charge it like every 3 weeks, but for Max, I have to charge every other day with the same usage type. I guess its because of the Noise Cancellation.

I have both. Sony wins. So much more comfortable. The XM5's are stupidly comfortable. And I like the sound better. The Airpods Max will seem to sound better when you first put them on. But after 10 minutes, that hard, bright, cool, analytical sound will get old. The XM5's have a beautiful warm sound you can listen to for hours with a lot more balance than the XM4's--which are very bass heavy and a light on treble.

xm 5 bass can be adjust using equaliser while airpods max no bass but good at noise cancel and spatial audio. for good bass xm 5 and good battery life. the mesh on airpod mac can't replace till worn out. i have both of them. airpods max is the worst when bad battery life and worst bluetooth. i had to sent it 3 times for replacing airpods max within A year while sony no issue. i prefer xm 5 over long term use rather than airpods max. apple audio is no good unless they improve. better stick with other brand such as Bang or Olufsen. seinheiser

Hey, glad to hear that, I also have an XM5, and I have been using em for about 5+ months. The noise cancelling is really good, and the comfortability is top notch. If you to eq your XM5s' but don't want to do it yourself, try out Wavelet, it will make quiet a bit of different, when I first got my XM5s' they sounded a bit caged up, waiting to get released, I downloaded wavelet now they sound better, but now I use my own custom eq, which in my humblest opinion, sound better, but not everyone has the same eq taste

2 completely different headphone’s… Sony, lightweight good quality, better for on the go, or long sessions. Max. High quality, heavy, good for music and movies at home, to heavy and oncomfortabel for long sessions. They really aren’t that comparable..

Ok sooooooo one major thing wrong with this video, the airpodmax more then likely sound better because apple devices dont support high quality bluetooth audio codecs... and the airpod max and apple products do extra tweaking to get the most out of a much weaker bluetooth signal, most android primium phones support ldac which is much better then aac which is below cd quality that the iphone is only capable of pumping out, so to get to the point youre using the well adjusted airpods max with apple devices and that means that the sony xm5 is getting much less information than its capable of producing, not knocking you but this is very misleading, if you have apple products get airpods anything because its software and hardware are adjusted for lower frequencies, if you have a high end android device the sony xm5 would be the better choice, my suggestion is watch a video on how bt audio codecs work

The major downside of the AirPods Max that you can not use all of the functions without an Apple device. The Sonys and all other brands are compatible to nearly all devices on the market with bluetooth... For non Apple useres its waste of money to the AirPods

I have both and prefer the apple! The Sony are made out of a cheap plastic material and over all feel cheap! While apple feels sturdy and high end material

I agree with everything you said, but how can you say the AirPods Max sound better than the Sony 1000XM5? There is another KZbin software engineer that actually shares the sound quality on both headphones and it is not even close, so I'm a bit confused on this part. Yes, if you have everything apple, the AirPods Max is the way to go, but if you are an audiophile and care a lot about sound quality, the Sony XM5 is the way to go regardless of you being an Apple user or not. @@Liveeachdaytothefullest it’s priced high for sure like all Apple stuff. I will pay it for demonstrable improvements. I actually got a pair ($300) but returned them within the return period. I found them only marginally better than the AirPods Pro 2 in all categories with the exception of bass. But the really sucky aspect for me is the discomfort and sweaty ears. I could go no longer than 60m. No thanks. Let’s hope Apple pulls their head out and delivers a power button, case and lighter headphones in the next version.

There are better materials that they can use at that price point that are light and higher quality. You need to realize that these kind of stuff cost them dollars to make and charge hundreds.
