They have cost their customers an ungodly amount of money. Not to mention the time and money they cost the general public.

We were boarding a 7am flight with Delta MCO>BOS when they stopped because the airplane was too hot. They eventually boarded everyone. The last passengers, me included, were forced to check-in our carry-on bags. Once on the plane, we were told we need to get off the plane because there were no pilots. Back in waiting, we meet other people on the flight after us that had no pilots either. They kept delaying and delaying instead of canceling the flight. Luckily, I lived locally and uber'd home after 4 delays. They did not allow me to get my carry-on back and baggage claim was an absolute disaster. I met a man whose 6am flight was canceled and was searching for his bags 3 hours later. I drove back to the airport and after a 9 hour delay they finally canceled the flight. That's the only way they would take bags off of the airplane. I picked up my bags around 9m and the baggage claim area was still in disarray.

IT IS THEIR FAULT for not having redundant systems in place! Most airlines have digitalized everything because it's cheaper and there's less reliance on manual inputs (ie. less staff on payroll). They don't even train employees on how to override system functions anymore. The reason Southwest & Jetblue weren't as impacted is because their systems are older (or obsolete as many would ignorantly say) and still require a certain degree of manual intervention for things to get processed. All three legacy carries ought to be ashamed of themselves, this completely exposed their greedy ways and complete disregard towards customers, especially Delta who consistently brags about being #1! NO EXCUSES
@CrabbyOldLady2 ай бұрын
@@philhenderson3516 This would not have been avoided by having redundant software systems. They would literally have needed an entire redundant hardware system, and an entirely redundant network, which used a completely different cybersecurity suite. The affected computers were bricked. They went into an endless boot loop, meaning no software system would be operative.
@philhenderson35162 ай бұрын
@@CrabbyOldLady Not true, when American had the SABRE system (which they themselves created before spinning it off) it ran on its own platform/network. The fact that everything collapsed now is because they're all hooked to MS. It's a lot cheaper and they don't have to maintain/service a system infrastructure of their own. Like it or not, this is what greed gets you! If they truly cared about having a robust system, they'd divest some of the functions and have them operating independently from MS.
@CrabbyOldLady2 ай бұрын
@@philhenderson3516 That misses the point. It's irrelevant if the system is onsite or hosted elsewhere. The network will be completely offline because the individual servers and client computers will all be stuck in endless boot loops. "Independent of MS" has nothing to do with it. You're not independent of hardware, and whatever hardware you had would be non-functioning.

Contrary to the false implication from the shrieking correspondent near the end of the story, this was never going to be a quick or easy fix. Perhaps if shrieking correspondents had done a better job of communicating that from the beginning, there wouldn't be so many travelers with false hopes. There is no way for a fix to be rolled out remotely across a network from a central point. Each and every affected computer must have the fix done manually by an IT technician. That takes time.
