Thumbs up guys, great episode, many don't realize how big a deal this is, very few, have had the honor of a Goodyear blip ride, as you stated, it's invite only, my father was one of the privileged few year ago. Also big props to David, for his FPV space attempt, learned a good deal for our planed upcoming attempt!

A little trivia about the Goodyear blimps - the Resolute, one of the many vessels in the Goodyear fleet, actually operated under a letter of marque. Yes, one of the Goodyear blimps was actually a privateer ship under employ by the US during World War II.

Wow, this really was a top notch episode guys. It was really easy to understand everything explained. Great questions by Josh, and great responses from the pilot. I learned a lot. This channel deserves some type of KZbin award for best productions or something of the like. I remember I first came here and thought these were Discovery network TV shows being uploaded on someone's KZbin channel. Keep up the great work.

Lighter than air Mythbuster's stile ! Good work...people need to understand LTA designs and uses , because this type of flight is far from obsolete, as most think. No, in fact it will become a very important commercial and military tool again in the very near future.

I just started to fly 2.5m long blimp. Wight and helium is balanced so that you need motors to keep it in the air. So in case of motor breakdown, battery failure etc. the blimp slowly lands.

Only great for filming on calm non-windy days. If you watch American football, baseball or soccer games that are played in roofless venues, you'll occasionally see footage of the venue from a blimp. But this only happens when the weather is calm.

Cool Stuff, thanks great info. Here's something to think about.... A long time ago I saw a picture of a "Balloon" connected to a small building made out of "Wicker", actually it was a Two Story Small Building. This thing was built for the "rich", a Luxury type of thing, for those who had money and wanted to look at the world from above. This back in time before airplanes and the boon of the Balloon Era.

Great video guys, question about the thrust motors on the small-scale blimp: are those motors just a servo motor connected to its original board and plugged into the receiver, or is there some kind of ESC that you used?

Why don't we bring back zepplins back as passenger transport? Many of the problems seem to be able to be remedied by modern technology, and it would be much better than an airplane, to the point where they were even called "flying ocean liners" at one point.
@SteveCrowe37

Helium shortage seems to be the limiting factor. Helium on earth is an accumulation of alpha particles from radioactive decay of heavy elements. In the past it has been a scarce resource, but this has been largely negated by new technology which has allowed ever lower levels of helium to be extracted as a by-product in the natural gas production process. We have no way of producing "new" helium, but the ability to exploit less concentrated sources along with measures to conserve helium as it is "used" have made it unlikely that we will run out. As a product of nuclear decay, small quantities of helium would be made in all nuclear power plants, but at the moment, the capture of this helium isn't economically viable. And we already know about hydrogen and how that worked out. But I agree, and personally believe that the airship is going to become the aviation giant in the coming years. As it would make the best of solar panel power, as it does not require energy to generate lift. And could go way above the clouds and weather, meaning that it would avoid storms, which were a huge problem with the first airships, and would be in a less obstructed view of the sun, allowing the panels to soak up energy more efficiently. And they have indeed found success in the past! Imagine if the Hindenburg had be allowed to use helium...I almost wonder if the great airship era would have ever stopped.
@radiantjet418
@radiantjet418 9 жыл бұрын
Our military actually is using them again. Look up the LEMV. It uses a combination of gasses to get the same helium lighter than air affect. I have read that these things can fly autonomously and also stay up in the air indefinitely. You fly above the clouds and put some solar cells on the top and yes. It will never have to come down. It will be like a sky sub. You only have to dock when food stocks run low.

Great show. Some questions that come to mind about the full size one. I'll have to Google. How much helium does it need? Does it leak much? Do they deflate it very often? I guess they save the helium when it is deflated. Is the helium in compartments to minimize the risk of a leak? Is there a helium tank on-board to keep it topped up in flight?

I feel like remote controlled blimps are a little bit stressful to fly outside because of the many things that can go wrong. If the rc blimp is calibrated for really cold weather and is suddenly flown during a really hot day the motors might not be able to counteract the increase in buoyancy and the whole blimp could be lost. Another concern is that you have to really make sure that the gondola will not come off.
