This looks like it might be good. One of the few times my father talked about his war experiences is when we were watching "Twelve o'clock High" television show; I commented on a scene where they were being attacked on a bomb run and I made the mistake of calling shrapnel "scrap metal." He then for the first time talked all about his fears when he was in combat. He mentioned that flack was the worst of his fears but said "we didn't worry too much about it unless we saw the red of the bursting shell. We knew then that was when they really had zeroed in their altitude." My dad was Wayne Thomas Stump and he piloted a B-17, flying with the Eighth Airforce, 390th Bomb Group, 569th Squadron.

My grandpa used to operate these guns. Zeroing in wasn't that much of a problem as he told me. they had a device called 'Würzburg' which was a Radar. The only problem was the constant changes of speed and course of those bombers, since a shell needs to travel up to 30 seconds to these altitudes those bombers flew in. I think he mentioned once, that he got one - but i think that was just his battery of Flaks on one of the Nordfrisian Islands ;)

My grandfather flew 27 missions over France and Germany, including a flight on D-Day. 2 different crews and 2 different B-17’s (most were killed and the first plane unsalvagable) with the 305th Bomb Group. Having that first hand account from him and his diary he kept at the time, I was extremely nervous to watch, fearing artistic license would be taken and a disservice done. I think it captures his stories, but the reality was even more dramatic if you can believe it.

The last thing you do when your plane is about to stall and fall out of the sky is to lower your landing gear. Also, belly landings are safer when the field you're crash landing into is an unknown quantity - You could easily dig your wheels in and go over on your back if the conditions are wrong.
@zanaduz20183 ай бұрын
Lowering gear would add to drag, which will slow you down further - absolutely the wrong thing to do when your engines are not giving you enough thrust already. Since the ball gunner is already out of the turret (they would have gotten out once over the English Channel), there's little reason why they shouldn't belly land. Likewise, the concern about wheels digging in absolutely was a concern - it's what happened to the Akutan Zero. The Zero was forced to land, and ended up catching its wheels into a bog which caused the Zero to flip over and kill the pilot when the plane landed on top of the cockpit.

I recognize the harbor at 1:17. That's Trondheim, and they're bombing the Dora I and II submarine pens. Since Trondheim was only hit by the allies once during the war, that puts the date of the raid this series represent to 24th of July, 1943. @TheMinipily3 ай бұрын
Well said, the CGI is miles better than the original previews back in 2014. Much better casting too. A lot of people like to compare it to real plane action like in Memphis Belle however the action in Memphis Belle was much more tame compared to this. You cannot create a picture of just how insanely batshit intense these raids really were with real aircraft. It just isn't viable due to the constraints of having to nurse these old planes around slowly in the air to preserve them. Just look at the dogfights in Dunkirk for example, slow and not entirely realistic to what the dogfights over Dunkirk were really like. At least with CGI, you can afford to push things further and beyond and the action pays off for it.
@Brendissimo13 ай бұрын
I like how fast the attacking interceptors are - you can barely see them blazing past. It's probably still a bit slowed down compared to real life, but it really gets the point across to the audience while still being visually readable on a big HD screen. The show uses things like slow motion very sparingly, and relies on a nice level of visual clarity and consistency to show the action to the audience. Also the action is frequent and often not the focus of the camera but instead is happening all around the characters. And they didn't sanitize the gore either. The wounds that the show depicts the airmen suffering are absolutely horrific. So far, so good.

@@TheMinipilyreal life "dogfights" were boring and slow. Watch any gun cam footage from WW2 or play any realistic flight sims. It was very hard for pilots to pull any sort of intense maneuvers, especially before g suits were common. Pilots also had to get incredibly close to reliably take down a target. Most aircraft engagements consisted of sneaking up on people or shooting planes while they were on the ground. Dunkirk's action was very realistic (except for when Tom Hardy kept fighting with his engine dead). There are plenty of real B17s that they could have used for this show, and plenty of proxy/reproduction aircraft that they could have used for dogfights. I understand why this show used CGI, but it's lazy. Not only does it hurt the viewer experience, it hurts the acting. These performances are lifeless, which is to be expected when you are slapped in front of a green screen.

I have been inside the Dora Bunker as well. It is fascinating to see such a concrete monstrosity in real life. In many ways it equals the pyramids in size and scale(If not in construction). It will probably outlast the rest of Trondheim by several millennia. The bunker was so solidly built that after the war, once demolition was rule out, they built a ramp up to the roof and then built a warehouse on top of it. They are thinking about tearing that warehouse down and building a bigger one instead. Doing both was cheaper than actually tearing the Sub Pens down. As for the sub pens themselves, they are now archives for various state, county or local organisations. I mean if a raid of B-17 didn't put a dent in it; then its probably a nice place to store documents and stuff.

There is no conclusive evidence that Ju-88s were ever used in any organized capacity as DAY TIME heavy bomber intercept fighters, but they were used as long range reconnoissance and shadowed Allied Bomber formations to direct intercept fighters. The interesting thing about this misidentification is that it comes from the air sick navigator Harry Crosby's book, "A Wing and a Prayer". He is the only one to refer to those fighters attacking the formation during that Trondheim Sub Pens mission as Ju-88s. He probably mistakenly confused the name while writing his book many years later. They couldn't have been because the Luftwaffe Jagdgeschwader 5 (Eismeer), which operated in the far north of Europe namely in Norway in 1943 had an operational Zerstörerstaffel that flew Bf-110s. I can't speak as to why they would still choose to misidentify them except to show human error in high stress.

There *were* fighter versions of the Ju-88, but… they were not known to be deployed as area defense fighters. They were most often used as night fighters (with early radar equipment), or long-range patrol fighters deployed to counter Allied anti-submarine patrol aircraft. So it’s conceivable that a patrolling Ju-88 could happen to be in the area by coincidence. Others here have offered more comments on the crew calling them Ju-88s. Visually the aircraft are actually Me-110s.

My Dad was shot down in his Lanc over Denmark in March 1943… by a Ju88 Nachtjäger. I say shot down - they managed to level out just above the sea and made it back over the North Sea with no rudder, just using differential engine thrust to steer. Dad and the pilot were nominated for DFCs; vetoed by their mean bast**d of a Wing Commander, a certain Fleming, who said they shouldn't have got intercepted in the first place!

@Debbiebabe692 ай бұрын
WW2 bombers tended to bomb off the lead plane - when he drops, you drop. Also the stick of bombs took a while to drop. Even if you assume the Norden had *LASER* accuracy and the bombs dropped perfectly straight like a *LASER* , just think. The first bomb, the one that falls the instant you pull the trigger, hits the target. However by the time your last bomb has dropped, you will have travelled forwards at least 450 metres, so your bombs will be long by 450 metres. The rest of the bombers will be behind you, some several miles, so their bombs drop several miles short. In other words, only that first bomb has a chance of actually hitting a point target. So if your aim is 50 metres off, which is quite easy and could be caused by something as simple as increaced air temperature due to exploding flak, the only bomb that has the chance to hit, will miss. Hence why area bombing was found to be more suited to the B17.

I haven't seen episodes yet but from this clip I question the quality and accuracy just based on the filmmakers not depicting the extremely important act of feathering the props on dead engines. The drag created by those big fat Hamilton Standards cannot be overstated. If they're not making thrust they are making death unless feathered. This is why fighters of the day did power on landings as opposed to what you'd see a Cessna do today.
