Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
Thanks to Jeff Folloder and Airtronics USA, I have a chance today to look at and test-fire a PSRL (Precision Shoulder-fired Rocket Launcher) - in essence, an American-made RPG-7. The rocket we are using here is a Bulgarian-made training round with an inert warhead and live booster and rocket.

“American made” did you source the materials and/or parts from America and if you did, are they of better quality? Is it fully assembled in America, or assembled to 90% completion elsewhere and the last few steps are done in the USA so you can slap the sticker on it? If so, is it even a meaningfully superior product? America doesn’t exactly have a monopoly on quality engineering. This just reminds me of morons who make a big deal of buying shitty “American” cars like fords and chevys (which were actually manufactured in Mexico with poor-quality parts sourced from China) while downtalking my Toyota that was manufactured at the plant two hours away. It’s empty American exceptionalist bullshit

@KyussTheWalkingWorm
@KyussTheWalkingWorm 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScottKenny1978 Doesn't change the fact that it's not *used* as a high explosive in this context. You never want your rocket fuel to detonate. The nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin and nitroguanidine used in smokeless powder are also high explosives when in their pure, bulk form, but the additives as well as the physical shape of each piece of propellant are designed to let it decompose without detonating. Virtually every energetic compound is a high explosive in bulk, and fuel-oxidiser compositions also have the potential to detonate when confined. "Low explosive" is more a property of the formulation and application rather than the chemical itself.

@@ScottKenny1978 HMX is by no way the primary ingredient in solid rocket fuels - it's far to expensive to anywhere near cost effective. I think Jeff is looking at this the wrong way. You want to know why RPG-7s and AKs are fucking everywhere? Because they just work. You don't need a ton of training to be able to use either one at a good enough level. The AK was meant to hit stuff from 0 yards to about 250 or 300 yards. It does that. It gets you minute of bad guy accuracy. And it's great for conscript armies because it doesn't matter if it's all that clean, doesn't matter that it's oiled, as long as you keep debris and dirt out and put ammo in, it goes bang. Yes, I'm aware of the failed mud tests. Probably solvable by just swishing it in water. The RPG-7 does what it is designed to do as well. That sales pitch was so oily, I'm surprised the US military didn't invade the video. God, I need a shower using Dawn soap just from watching this guy. Also, RPG-7 ammo self detonates at 900 meters. Seems he doesn't know that.

This one does not make much sense unles you are solely interested in the fact that the launcher - glorified pipe really - was made in US. The complicated part is the ammunition, not the tube with the hammer. That thing is really a low-tech and couple of rails thrown at it does not change the fact. I remember when couple of years back Airtronics was showing a first version of this with a M4 style buttstock fixed behind the trigger grip. That was really amusing considering the RPG has exactely ZERO recoil regardless of the rocket used. If you have a legal or ideological reason to buy a pipe made in US instead of somewhere else, go for it. But it is still a pipe, just like it was 70 years ago...

Also not sure I’d talk down “communist” engineering (as if the soviets were communist in anything other than name, or that a political ideology has anything to do with the quality of manufacturing) when the soviets, within the space of less than a century, went from a backwater feudalist society to a global superpower that even after being ravaged by WWII, beat us on every major milestone of the space race, save for landing a man on the moon. Exactly this. The rocket itself is what decides just how accurate these are, they have set effective accurate ranges based on their weight, profile (different rounds have different air resitances), and weight. They also naturally have maximum ranges, were they simply can't fly that far, or in the case of some types of warhead (not sure if the RPG-7 used any of these) they have a pre-set maximum range at which they auto-detonate (guessing for safety reasons, safety and explosives, heheh). It's also worth noting that each individual type of rocket should have different sights too, a HEAT warhead and a Thermobaric warhead for example, have different flight profiles, including varying different maximim ranges requiring a different set or sights. You'll actually see this on some multi use launchers already, they'll have several visual indicators on their default optical sights for different types of common rounds.

You know it's American because it has picatinny rail all over it for no reason. Also unlike in Call of Duty the real RPG-7's are very accurate. And considering it uses standard RPG rockets anyway that just goes to show it's no different performance wise. The guy is saying a lot of bullshit, the HEAT warhead doesn't send an explosive intot he tank afterwards. There are tandem projectiles but those are different. Tandem warhead PG-7VR is designed to trigger reactive armour first with the first warhead followed by the warhead to the rear which will penetrate the main armour. Also effective range of this will not be any different to the original, the rockets are exactly the same.

Being the representative for the company I expected a bit more of explanation about the warheads, but anyway The most common munitions for the RPG-7 platform are the original PG-M (HEAT,350/400mm of penetration), the OG-7V (HE-Frag, anti personnel) and the PG-7VR (HEAT-TH, 650mm). I'm not up to date on all variants and I'm still researching how Thermobaric munitions work, but they maximise the shockwave and heat by use of an empty chamber in front of the explosive, may be wrong, this makes them multi purpose as they can dispatch or incapacitate infantry especially in enclosed environments or they can send shrapnel (by damaging the inside-layer of armor) and a huge concussive shock through the armor of a vehicle The OG-7V anti-personnel munitions are just a High Explosive package with a fragmentary shell around them All those Anti-Tank rounds utilise HEAT warheads, they utilize the Munroe Effect and are characterized by a concave shaped charge (their main technical name across languages) set behind a concave ductile copper cone, when the piezo-electric fuse of the RPG munition hits the target, the explosive goes off and shapes the copper into an hypersonic Superplastic Copper spear which cuts the armor and damages anything in its path inside the target. That's a HEAT warhead, a HEAT-TH or HEAT-Tandem warhead is basically two HEAT warheads stuck one after the other to defeat ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor), armored vehicles often use ERA to defeat shaped charge munitions, ERA blocks are small armored boxes containing an explosive layer, when they are penetrated by a warhead they are set off and violently redirect the munition or simply destroy it, Tandem projectiles have a primary charge to dispatch ERA, then a bigger secondary warhead to penetrate armor

The monroe effect does not actually produce plasma, its kinetic energy also known as plastic deformation. The metal does not get hot enough to melt, it just get bulldozed out of the way by the incredibly high pressures over a very small area. Maybe some surface particles melt but its by no means hot enough to melt its way through the armor plate.

@@CaptainGrief66 people have been saying plasma for a very, very long time. Till someone very carefully sawed a HEAT warhead into a bunch of strips, taped it all back together, and fired it into a water tank. The liner came out of the tank in strips. As a side note, they don't have to be a copper cone. Some of the Russian 125mm HEAT warheads use a depleted uranium liner for extra oomph.
@ryanj610
@ryanj610 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainGrief66 Thermobaric charges (from what I've gathered) are now the most lethal thing to personnel that an RPG can launch. Rather modern and not often used. They use the concept of a 2 stage explosive; one to detonate and disperse a fuel (NOT 25%fuel/75% Oxidizer Mixture), and often a second to ignite the fuel, which uses atmospheric oxygen. This then will cause an explosion that propagates outward with a longer duration, meaning the weapon kills by pressure wave, and the resulting vacuum. So since they're all fuel, they have a VASTLY increase area of effect/power, with the benefit of decimating confined spaces because they keep travelling until there is no oxygen. Downsides are that they don't work underwater; don't work well in very high altitudes; don't work if say shot deep into the ground; and don't have the velocity and violence of a typical primary explosive. You won't rip apart armor with one. There are Tandem RPG rounds for the 27 that have a HEAT round that blasts an entry for the thermobaric charge, but to me, it seems rather ineffective, as it can only make it through about 100mm of RHA. Thermobaric weapons are simply the best bang for the buck when it comes to energy density. The RShG-1 for example, has more destructive force than a 152mm HE artillery round, while being far, far lighter.
