I also lost a sibling younger than 1 year old due to SIDS. And even though he passed away our mother doesn't shove it down our throats. Once in a while every year either on Xmas or his bday. We all are like oh she should've been so and so yrs old. Or he should've been graduating this year. Nothing big and we don't have these kinds of problems.

NTA. Honoring a lost relative by naming your child after them only holds the meaning OP’s mom is looking for if the parent of said child actually has fond memories of that relative. OP’s sister died before he was born and all he has to go by is his mother’s recollections of her. Mom is basically asking OP to name his baby girl after a random stranger. That’s just another of many red flags she showed. OP needs to go NC and his mom needs to see a grief counselor.

The OP needs to find a new place and go no contact. This woman is dangerous and no doubt given her behavior she might even try to kidnap the baby when it's born. Restraining orders need to be made and contact dropped immediately

the only asshole here is OP's dad for not taking him when he left. OP's mom is also an asshole, but in much more of an "oh my god you need to be in therapy or a mental hospital" kind of way than an actual "you're doing this while sound of mind and this is a conscious decision to be a dick" way.

Wow! Mom has developed some serious mental issues over her loss, and she needs serious help. She has no right to try to make her grief YOUR grief, and demand all these concessions from you. I shudder to think what would happen if you two did name your daughter after your sister. Your mother would be all over the poor child, as if she was a reincarnation of your deceased sister.
