@A C Well, I understand this situation. This wouldn't be the ONLY project in this company. You can always hop onto a different one after you get back from maternity leave, on the other hand it's only 7 months (here it's 18). And I had that happen with a co-worker. We were hired this march to a team, and 2 months later she announces that btw she's 6 months pregnant so she's going on maternity leave till the end of 2022. Well that sucks because 2 weeks later I ended up in hospital for 6 weeks. And the guy we were suppose to help was left alone again, and not able to take any time off. Really unfortunate. And I would've been angry as manager as well, if you are purposefully hiding the fact that you'll be unavailable for X time because of something you already know will happen - why not let these people know? In such case they can plan ahead and find someone to atleast cover the time you'll be off. In my case, girl announced it like a month before leaving as well, which didn't give us enough time to find a temporary replacement for the 18 month period. And if she said that she's pregnant - as she was one of the best at interviews - I'm actually quite confident they would've hired her anyway, but would also try and find a third person on temporary replacement contract. That's why I disagree on your 'male-dominated field' comment. Even here, where 80% of employees are women,and you actually get a shit ton of benefits for getting pregnant (like 18 month long payed leave for example, and like a gift baskets and all the usual salary bonuses) it's a dick move to not inform anyone in advance. EDIT: I just got to the point where NL is sarcastically saying "THINK OF THE TEAM" xD YEAH THINK OF IT! It's not about the money, or oh my the poor company will loose some pennies over it. Nobody should care about that. Maybe the employee market is completely different in Canada or USA, but holy shit it's so hard to find an employee here. Job offers are hanging for months before we can find anyone suitable for the job. There's literally negative unemployment where I live xD
@plop00003 жыл бұрын
@@pixelpox11 3 months is more than enough time to plan ahead as you said but unfortunately you can't predict health complication, you going to the hospital or her having to take leaves early. Would you be ok to be put on the side because you are the guy that "need to go to the hospital" in a middle of a project and can't be count on?
@pixelpox113 жыл бұрын
@@plop0000 If I knew that I was going to the hospital because of reason X then I would've informed them. If they said that I was untrustworthy because I was in hospital (a random occurence in this case) then I would probably try to change jobs. But now that I think about it I might be either biased or lack the perspective of a bad company. When I landed in the hospital these people went out of their way to get flowers to where I stayed at (I work remotely) even though it was technically illegal due to some weird covid restrictions. We got gifts for our pregnant colleague as well and wished her all the best with honest smiles. That's why I'm assuming that everyone should be just honest and think of other people because my work environment seems to be a paradise when it comes to human interactions and good treatment of the employee, but due to lack of hands so to say, you leaving unexpectidaly leaves other people in a huge strain of work. And therefore I believe the M to be the asshole, for not being honest on wether she can actually do the project or not. But okay, let's try to look at this from her perspective only. What (other then just one line on resume) is she getting from it? She knew she wouldn't be actively participating in 80% of the project, she wouldn't learn anything from it or build any kind of new experience, or potential advantages for herself in this work space. What was the reasoning there? I just don't understand.

The very notion that a woman who, by the admittance of OP, was fully capable, hard working and knowledgeable and would therefor be a shoe-in for the project, would NOT BE GIVEN A SPOT ON THE PROJECT because she was pregnant is a full indication that the only reason people don't want her on the team is because of her pregnancy. To then have the AUDACITY to blame this woman for not telling them she was pregnant (and this is at a point in time where she isn't visibly pregnant, so at most like 3 months in) and ostracize her within that company. A company she had worked at for a while, considering she was given the opportunity to work on a project of that scale, and had a reputation as hardworking and knowledgeable. "Waiting for a different project" doesn't WORK when, hey, guess what? If people know you have a child, and you are actively taking care of that child, nobody's gonna fuckin invite you to big, career-defining projects, ESPECIALLY as a woman, because people will assume you won't be able to perform to the same standard, 'cause you're splitting time between being a mother and being an employee. Within the vast majority of corporate environments (certainly within male-dominated ones), this specific project was her LAST opportunity to participate in a large-scale project that could get her a good reputation, and the people in the company not only would have screwed her over if she'd disclosed her pregnancy by passing her over for a project she was fully qualified for, but then had the GALL to fuckin ruin any possible benefits that project and what it could do for her career could've had by absolutely destroying her reputation and screwing her over ANYWAY, AND THEN OP DID THE SAME TO HER AT HER NEW JOB BY TELLING HER NEW JOB'S EMPLOYER THAT SHE WAS UNTRUSTWORTHY. Congratulations are in order, really! OP DESTROYED any chance that this woman had to advance her career in any meaningful way for the next couple of decades because he had to "do a little more work" and a project "suffered minor delays". Honestly baffling that anyone can defend this, at best he's an asshole and at worst he actively tarnished her reputation. Sexism in the workplace, folks! Always fun to see. (Just to throw this in here, because I KNOW people are gonna say it, yes there's a difference in the treatment of new mothers and new fathers. Both suck, but in this specific case, a woman has to choose between starting a family and furthering her career because a huge part of career-furthering opportunities spontaneously vanish when you become a mother. Fathers, of course, get WAY less slack for days off to be with their children, and in turn are forced to choose between keeping up with their coworkers or being a good father, but mothers doom any progress in their careers to futility by starting families 9/10 times).

You think Corporate's just gonna look at a Datasheet: "Oh, M was part of that Project, give her a raise!", without considering the fact, that she willingly abandoned the Project? React Court started popping up in my recommendations, so I've been listening to it during my commute lately. The response to the elderly mom selling her vacation home to one of her two daughters -- who are estranged from one another -- that the mother was the reason they had no love for each other (after having read only a couple of paragraphs of context) was the most insane take I've heard in one of these yet. THEN after learning that a horrifically traumatic event that happened when they were young was the catalyst for their estrangement, the person doubled down on how the mother was making something that out of her control (and that no doubt traumatized her as well) worse with what she did. So then THAT became the most insane take I've ever heard in one of these videos. Reddit is full to the brim with some completely unempathic psychopaths. It'd be one thing if someone commented that and everyone disagreed, but like you said, the mom got ratio'd. People read that and thought it was a rational and sane reply. I get that she nuked her career at her first work place, if I was one of the team leads I’d not want to put her anywhere too important after she returns but to damage her career in the company she moved to next was completely unacceptable. It wasn’t that persons job to be playing snitch for some likely competing business, let her either succeed or fail there but don’t sabotage her. @Whaka Tewhinau It’s more so that she has a history after she returns of holding information back (which while legally is her right) that may be relevant to wether she will be around to complete the work she is given. I just wouldn’t want to put her in a position that isn’t easily replaceable in case she does the same again. If she didn’t want to tell people that she was pregnant at the time that’s fine, and her legal right, but she really shouldn’t have applied to be team lead when she knew she wouldn’t be able to finish the project, to me that shows disrespect to the people she works with. Like I said though I find it more unacceptable to sabotage her in the next company, let her succeed or fail but don’t poison the drinking well before she has even done anything there.

She played the game, and she has to expect the company to play the game back. She should be allowed to make a fresh start somewhere else though.

@@thebellster No? People are free to pick and choose who they want on their project teams based on things like personality (her being deceitful or untrustworthy). What would be illegal is the company expressly doing so because she was pregnant and took leave. But that's not why, people are doing it because of her deceptive actions that led up to that, not her pregnancy or motherhood itself. Imagine for half a second that one of the interview questions is "do you have anything that will prevent you from working on this project 100% of the time we need you to" and she says "no", then takes 7 months maternity leave. The issue isn't that she got pregnant and took leave, it's that she's an untrustworthy liar. Being untrustworthy is not a protected legal status.

With the son though, judging from the post, he is 25 but doesn't contribute at all - doesn't pay for rent or utilities, doesn't work, doesn't help with the chores etc. With that in mind, he is really not an adult but still a kid who is being provided with everything by his parents like a little boy. Since he has the same responsibilities as a kid, he should have the same priviligies and yes, follow the house's rules provided they don't break the law. Parent's rule maybe be overboard, in particular, the one where he needs to sleep outside. I don't think that not wanting for the place to turn into a brothel and being waked up by son, who, again, is just leeching on them, is ridiculous. Parents have the full right to be upset and honestly, the son should move out. Perhaps a compromise would be to help him out and pay for his bond and the first month of rent, but that behavior with no responsibilities as an adult and wanting to be treated as such definitely should stop. @frankfilmic3 жыл бұрын
Some key info missing on the first post: it sounds like the woman worked at the company for a decent amount of time after returning from maternity leave, and she was competent enough that she was able to interview for and get hired at a better company. Did any of her behaviour during this period hint at her being unprofessional and untrustworthy? It sounds like the guy who made the post is smearing her whole professional reputation based on her (admittedly ill-timed) pregnancy leave, but he's conveniently not saying anything about how she operates at her actual job now that the leave is over. Sounds to me like she did the right thing: she mildly inconvenienced some people in order to get a job that she was qualified for, and now that she's done cleaning shit and puke 10x a day she actually became a valuable employee. But you know, can't jump to conclusions, it's only one side of the story, etc etc.
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, she was already an employee there and was being interviewed to be part of a specific project, which she lied to them about her ability to participate in because she knew she was pregnant. She then took leave and didn't help that team at all during the project. So she is now a pariah, because she could have just said "sorry I'm pregnant and will be taking leave soon" instead of lying and creating problems. "Sounds to me like she did the right thing: she mildly inconvenienced some people in order to get a job that she was qualified for". You need to reread the post, also this take is atrocious. She isn't even qualified for the project because she is about to be gone for 7months (the bulk of the project time). Getting a job should never inconvenience the people you are going to be working for. That doesn't make sense, you're supposed to be providing value, not creating problems, and if you know you're pregnant lying to get a job just so you can immediately take paid maternity leave is actually super fucked. It's basically stealing. (She wasn't doing that, she worked at the company before the interview for the project. But your comment implied that the scenario I just described would be "the right thing")
@thebellster3 жыл бұрын
@@contentiouscritic It's not stealing to exercise her right to paid leave. It's not lying to not tell your employer things that aren't their business. Wherever this company is, it's almost certainly illegal to treat her differently because she took her pregnancy leave. She's qualified for the project, because pregnancy cannot legally disqualify someone. Your view on this is completely at odds with how this stuff is supposed to work.
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
@@thebellster Lmao "Your view on this is completely at odds with how this stuff is supposed to work." Because moral reality and social engineering often come into conflict. You are defending the absolute worst scenario this law can apply to. It can only make you look bad. This law is intended to protect women who have been working at a job or career and have contributed, who get pregnant and intend to take leave, and come back to continue work. It is not intended to allow pregnant women to lie to a potential employer, get hired somewhere with paid maternity leave (under the assumption they are not currently pregnant) and then immediately take that leave without having created any value for the workplace yet, only to potentially be a bad fit or not end up working there anyway. There is a reason for nuance.
@thebellster3 жыл бұрын
@@contentiouscritic It's illegal to not hire someone because they are pregnant, so why tell a potential employer? The knowledge that someone is pregnant can only be used for illegal purposes. If employers don't want people taking paid maternity leave immediately after getting hired, they can add a waiting period before it can be used.
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
It's not about pregnancy. It's about capacity. The law prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy or motherhood, but not accompanying status like lying about being unavailable. My sister was fired for putting her bosses maiden name on a form (shortly after she was married) because it showed she was “not truly invested in the team” (three other employees were let go around the same time for equally stupid reasons). Women have to pass up opportunities all the time in order to have a family, good for her for not letting this one slip by. And no, the other people on the team were not “left in a lurch”. But on the other, I totally understand that if this was a difficult project that required specific skillsets (which is sounds like it was) it wouldn't be easy to just "find another skilled and capable worker." She signed up for a project and did barely any of it before leaving the rest of her team to make up for the gap in the workforce. I understand it was for pregnancy, but it sounds like the problem wasn't it being *pregnancy* - it was an expected, intended duration of _not being there to work on the project._ She knew she wouldn't be there for a majority of the project, yet signed up without telling anybody she wouldn't be able to work for most of it.

She gave a months notice. If they were capable of choosing someone else if she had told them in advance, they’re capable of finding a replacement. Yes, she did leave the project behind which, yes, created a problem (that is solvable). You’re using the most hyperlogical version of this because technically she caused an inconvenience, rather than understanding this on a level that uses empathy and thinking about her personal situation.
@Thatguypat3 жыл бұрын
@@omgitskittyandjaja it's not just that she caused an inconvenience. It's that she knowingly and willfully caused an inconvenience in order to boost her own career at the expense of her coworkers. What she did was entirely legal but shes an asshole for doing it, and the social stigma it generated is completely fair
@misha78293 жыл бұрын
Ok listen. Signing up on a long project you know you will abandon in a month is shitty. If I was her teammate on that I would be upset too and that’s completely reasonable. It’s a very selfish thing to do so I can 100% see why noone would want to have her in their team on further projects in that company. Now from the sound of it, all it caused is a little stress and minor delays so noone got hurt. Hurting her rep in the new place of work is definitely an asshole move on his part.
@RDDProductionz3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If she knew she wasn't going to complete it (making it irrelevant that she got chosen in the first place, since I'm assuming she won't have it on her resume as she left early,) what was the point? I feel like NL tunnelvisioned on the latter issue. 100% OP's talking was the asshole move no doubt about it at all, but I believe the woman was in the wrong (not for getting pregnant, or taking the leave,) but for wasting their time with something that wouldn't pay off anyways for her.

I do think that the modern tactic of offering generous benefits, but then shaming the people who actually use them is some of the most HR shit I've ever heard. HR isn't your friend, they literally exist solely to corral employees, and act nearly exclusively in the favor of the company. NEVER. EVER. TRUST. HR. That being said, I also think that a harsh reality that a lot of young women need to understand is that it's usually very difficult if not impossible (and selfish IMO) to have a career and a child simultaneously. You need to pick one and commit and be at peace with your decision. One of the first things you should have learned as an adult is that life is full of concessions. Your attention and energy is going to be split in half at best, and you'll end up being a distant (bad) mother at worst. Some people can make it work, the vast majority cannot. I also understand that in today's world, it's very difficult for families to operate off a single income, but as someone who both grew up pretty poor and also had a distant mother who was always working, having a distant (bad) mother was worse than being poor. You'll hear similar sentiments from others as well.

that last one with the blender is a tricky situation ....without knowing their financial situation it's hard to know who the asshole is. if they are normally financially stuck it'd be understandable the wife would be uneasy about spending so much on a blender.
@hawxchampion5232 жыл бұрын
Given OP said he'd like to use a "small portion" of his bonus on the blender, which is $600, apparently it's a large bonus, so I doubt they don't make at least some decent money. Not to mention, according to the OP she didn't express concern with the cost, she just said "Look at these blenders that are much, much cheaper than the one you're looking at" to the point of comically cheap, $11? Even $100 for a blender, if he wants one that will last a decade, that's not enough budget for a quality blender. This is why I think more married couples should have separate finances (each have their own bank accounts, but contribute X amount to a shared fund for family expenses each month), that way these issues don't come up.

@@GameAlicornLuna Oh I've seen it and even if the graphics card wasn't fake it would likely have fried itself in 2-3 days. People on this subreddit are fucking crazy. People are completely ignoring the fact that this person has basically ruined this woman's career for doing something she was legally allowed to do. She'll have trouble with jobs forever by being laybled as untrustworthy just because she had a child. I don't care what country your in, she doesn't need to tell you shes pregnant and you cannot decline her the position because she is pregnant. Just send off a good reference to her next employer and try not to ruin other people's worklives

I was heavily leaning NTA for the first bit at first, but the more I consider it, the more I'm leaning to just YTA. Sure, she did take the project knowing she wouldn't be able to finish it, but she gave notice a *full month* before she went on ML, and hadn't been there for more than 2 months. Maybe it's just because I'm not familiar with a corporate environment, but that sounds like a lot of time for management to find a replacement and get them up to speed without much (if any) inconvenience to her peers, assuming it's not a hyper-specialized position. The second bit is hard YTA though, no question.
@AppleJackApple3 жыл бұрын
But the main thing about the first situation is ultimately not the inconvenience she caused to her colleagues or how easy it would have been to fix it, but the fact that she was deemed untrustworthy afterwards and described as such. Imagine: you are a project leader and assigned a really important 6 months project. You can promote 6 people to your team. You interview them and 6 people are selected. One month into the project three of them come to you and say: "Btw, I'm pregnant so I am exercising my right for maternity leave. I always knew I wouldn't be there for 6 month to work on the project, but that resume mark looks nice, and it is completely within my rights after all." It IS completely within their rights of course. What do you do? You deal with the inconvenience: you manage workload, someone takes their tasks, you ask HR to get you more people, etc. etc., and you finish the project one way or another. Then one year later you are given a similar project to manage and the same six persons volunteer to participate in it, along with three new ones. Who would you choose? Do you really trust the ones who left the project last time? I dunno, I wouldn't pick them - why should I risk going through all the hassle again if I can avoid it. Which is basically what the situation is about. It is within her rights to not disclose her pregnancy and use whatever laws are there to her advantage in career, but joining a project you never had intentions to finish while concealing your intentions, and expecting colleagues to have the same level of trust in her - that's a little much. As for telling new employer this story: if it is legal, then absolutely share it - it is a part of her past performance. If it is not legal - don't share it.
@matthewlizst79393 жыл бұрын
Being in a corporate environment, it often takes a lot longer than a month to get approval to post another position - especially if the role isn’t vacant and it’s a sick/mat leave type issue. I’ve been in that kind of position before too - where you’re on a project and someone drops out of it. It’s stressful, especially if you’re banking on that project making your career, and I would definitely say that what M did was unethical if she knew she’d be dropping out of the project and leaving the rest of the team to pick up the slack… but it could have been an unexpected health issue, so you never know. That said, the HR rep definitely shouldn’t have given that kind of information to the current employer, so definitely TA for that part, since it involved personal information, which could be quite sensitive in nature. Just because it’s legal to share it, doesn’t mean they should’ve.
@kloaf11313 жыл бұрын
the issue imo is that it means she spent a lot of the project team's time just to waste it and now mid way through probably phase 1 if not phase 2 of a normal project. they have to find someone new to replace. Catch them up to speed. Make sure she gave them all the relevant files and stuff needed of the new guy. And teach them to replace things she didn't as well as he has to get accustomed to her style of work and organizing depending on the role and project. A minor delay in a year project could be a few months due to that and while in the end project it's not a big deal it could be costly.
@JordanIdk3 жыл бұрын
This seems normal to me in the UK. She was well within her right to not tell them she was pregnant and end up in a project she couldn't complete. She didn't break any laws but you have to be realistic, if you omit the fact that you already know you can't complete 80% of the project then you're going to piss off the people deciding on your future at that company. You're also likely to piss off anyone on that project because they're now short-staffed and you knew they were going to end up like this when you made that decision. They're well within their right to simply not choose her for any major projects in future. It doesn't sound like anyone has a contract that dictates they'll be chosen for X amount of projects on a yearly basis. Companies contacting your previous employer(s) for comment on your performance and so fourth is expected in anything beside entry level jobs and if you don't agree that they're allowed to contact any employer from your work history then you're unlikely to be hired. Disclosing this omission would likely be fine as you've already agreed to it when you applied for the position. I think how this comes across will vary wildly based on the country you're in as the main bad thing was disclosing it to her new employeer but since it appears he's her former employeer this would be normal.
@lanrik45822 жыл бұрын
Disclosing it to her new employer wasn't the only bad thing, not to mention he didn't just describe what happened (which I'm not convinced needs to be shared at all, all it is really is that she was pregnant and took her leave) but started out by calling her dishonest and untrustworthy. You don't think never letting the woman join any projects again and treating her like a pariah at the company even though she's clearly competent and qualified, just because she dared to not disclose her pregnancy even though she was well within her rights to do so, is not a bad thing? People can be pissed of but who cares, that's literally just discrimination. Obviously people usually wouldn't even admit they're punishing her for that, but seems like OP didn't get the memo here.
