As a teacher (kinder) the reaction to the scissors situation was completely natural. Every so often a raised voice is necessary to get through to a child in a serious situation. It would be inappropriate if he kept yelling, but he didn't. He asked the child to step away while he calmed down and then he had a, seemingly, calm discussion about why he yelled and why it was serious. I honestly think it was well handled. A raised voice to get attention is not the same as screaming unnecessarily at a child.

The father in the scissors story tried to talk to the kid but got the scissors thrown at him, he tried again and the kid did again... Like... Remember what he said, kid really didn't want to listen to him talking

the scissors one I don't think he's wrong for yelling parents are still humans they have emotions. I understand your points and I agree with you but The dad yelling is not lazy he reacted and then talked to the kid as long as he understands that he should not have yelled at the kid he's not the A-hole

I agree, we have human responses. I would have talked to the kid afterwards, apologized for yelling and discussed how we both could have acted differently.

@@carlastone3937it sounds like he started to do that but the mom came in and yelled at him

When it’s a matter of safety I think yelling is appropriate. The dad responded out of fear and was trying to communicate to the kid that he was messing with something that could be dangerous and he should be fearful of. Threatening someone with scissors is not a joke or a behavior you want to see repeated. My mom only spanked me once in my entire life and it was because I ran across the street without looking. Guess what I never did again?

I agree to you 100% for the first story. Plus him letting his child to walk around IN PUBLIC with their pants soaked because HE didn't lifted his ass to change his clothes is actually neglect. It's so humiliating for the child and uncomfortable

Yelling is not ideal, but I make an exception for situations where someone needs to act quickly. Yelling to get attention and yelling to berate are two different things. Yelling has a psychological purpose, a sudden raise in tone and pitch is attention grabbing. It feels negative but we become immediately alert because yelling has a deeply ingrained biological "danger" warning. As long as that yell is brief and aligns with the "danger" then I'm for it. There is a reason that "Declan, NO!" are the words that come out of a parents mouth when they see a child a distance away about to touch a hot stove. Sure, you teach a kid about how hot burns before and after that yell, but you use that yell to grab their attention. I grew up in a yelling home too, so I understand the trauma. But as long as you use yelling, rather than ABUSE yelling, as a tool that it is intended for then I don't have a problem. Now if he yelled the whole thing at him then, yeah, that is a problem, but if he yelled "drop it!" Or "Tyler!" then I think that is appropriate. The mother is the bigger problem to me, because she interfered halfway through and at the part where they were communicating and bonding and making up, to tell him he was being "too serious", this was when the op was trying to explain to give the kid context and greater understanding as well as giving love and reassurance.

These are similar to my thoughts on this too. If one of the kids in my life walked into the road without looking, you can bet I'm raising my voice to a yell for them to immediately come back, and then after regulating my own anger, talk to them about why that was so unsafe, and why I raised my voice and yelled even thought I never do otherwise. Yelling in unchecked anger is different than yelling in unsafe situations.

@@PenelopeAstony Yeah, in theory I agree "no yelling" cause my mum would scream at me and I thought it was normal. My current partner has NEVER yelled at me and it is such a revelation. But, if someone is in danger I think that is the appropriate time to raise your voice. If a parent didn't yell "no!" when their child went to touch a hot plate then it would be bad. And I think the father in this story might have a bit of trauma themselves. Because if a kid has scissors ill just snatch it out of their hands. But he seemed really shaken by a little kid with scissors, which I'm not judging I don't know his trauma, and the kids was doing something dangerous and not listening so I think an initial yell to alert them to danger and then talking is fine.

i understand you POV about not yelling at kids, but why is it ok for mom to scream and the OP in front of the kid and why is the kid making stabbing motions with the scissors at a person at his age? you focus on the yelling but there is a whole lotta wtf in this story.

Autistic mom here my son has moderate autism he can do a lot of things for himself but I am still terrified every single day when something happens to me and my husband and who will take care of him. However though it is not fair to burden a sibling if they do not want to do it and if they have never done it and if they do not have a close relationship. It would be a whole different story if she had had a great relationship with him but no means no and she's not an a******,
