I've still got mine, which I purchased in 1981. The digital radio is fine, but the cassette deck needs to be repaired and the speaker surrounds have split and need to be replaced. I have received a ball-park quote to rebuild and repair but am not sure I can afford - or at least justify - the high cost. It's a lovely unit, the sound is superb and I would hate to get rid of it. It played a big part in my younger days and triggers many memories!!
@80s_Boombox_Collector7 жыл бұрын
How much are they asking? Shouldn't be any more than $150. Or you could do it yourself. Those speaker surrounds are just generic foam rings that can be purchased from many places. Same with the belts on the tape deck. if you join the Boomboxery forum, they can explain how to do it.
@wurlitzer8957 жыл бұрын
Well, I've only had a very rough cost emailed to me and that is before the unit has been seen and examined. I live in the UK (London) and the sum quoted was about £620.00p (presumably minus VAT at 20%), so nearer £750.00p. But it could be a whole heap less if the work doesn't entail a complete rebuild of the tape deck. Some of the electronics weren't working as far as I can remember.
@80s_Boombox_Collector7 жыл бұрын
Hmm well I'm in the US, but there are plenty of UK members on Boomboxery who could help you if needed.

Thank you very much indeed for the advice. I'll certainly check that out. I am a little short of cash these days, so if I could get it repaired at a better price, then I would be very pleased. The CS-880 is a superb piece of kit which deserves to be used and enjoyed. Thanks again for your advice and interest. With all good wishes. Peter A

Affect the repairs yourself, That quote issued is preposterous and possible worked on how vain a person you are. Like 80s boombox said, there are forums who would be happy to share their knowledge. AH, just looked at date time stamp, hope you got it sorted sir.

1978 to 1982 was the GOLDEN ERA of BOOMBOXES. They made them like tanks. With VU METERS. AND NICE FAT ROUND SOUND. Never seen this model before. But it sounds great. I Had a JVC RC--M70 in 1982.

I had this one. I worked a summer job to save up for it. I loved it and used it a lot. The sound was great but the unit was quite heavy...not great as a portable unit for too long or you would get tired of carrying it, especially loaded up with all the D batteries it required. I absolutely loved it and was proud of it especially since I had to save all summer for it back in 1982, I believe.

I think this is one of the best boomboxes of all times. I've got one in my collection. Thanks to passive radiator it makes it so comfortable to listen to music at low volume level. And the design is fantastic. Very much "Japanese" style, like most of the Aiwa boomboxes of that period.

Good video! This was the family stereo, back when I was a kid, in the early '80s all the way through the early '90s, until the tape deck broke down in '91 and my dad tossed it in favor of a CD-based audio system. I still wish he had it because I would have claimed it, repaired it and kept it around for my listening pleasure! At least I still have most of the cassettes recorded with the unit and they still sound really good!
@80s_Boombox_Collector7 жыл бұрын
And if it was still in good shape, you could get $500+ for it on Ebay

The cassette decks in these earlier boomboxes were so much more superior to the later 90's ones due to them having dolby nr, manual record levels and multiple tape type compatibilies.

It´s hard to find one of these still working (at least in my country) because everybody has the digital devices of today (I'm not against them) but having a vintage device like this, reminds. me my chilhood and teenage years. Thaks for sharing!

@@80s_Boombox_Collector Yeah theres something wonderful about analogue cassette. The fun making up your own cassettes. Of ONLY the songs you REALLY like. And then slotting it into a great boombox with hands on features. And watching it go round. MOVING PARTS. And warmth. All thats been lost with BLUETOOTH. And mono speakers. Everything is throwaway today.
@basslover3524 жыл бұрын
I'd say there's a lot more better sounding options in much smaller packages these days. Also this boombox is considerably better sounding than most 80's ghetto blasters. Though you still have to spend a good bit to get something good today as there is a huge sea of cheap small bluetooth speakers. A good portable speaker this size today would be superior as would be some smaller units. dsp and driver design in anything that isn't cheap junk has come a long way since then.

anditslikethat exactly where a third-party battery comes in. Mine has a third party one that rates itself at 1300mAh (probably impossible for the size) but it's been holding just fine over the past 4 years I've had it. my second 3rd-gen recently gave up and quit on me totally, so there's that battery... which only lasts an hour. so yeah, I guess so. (reminds me that I have to see if Rockbox's battery meter has gotten any better since 4 years ago... it's been a while.) but the battery replacement in those is extremely straightforward. if you ever deem it worth doing, a replacement is less than 10 bucks... in fact, I think it's like 6 bucks for a cheapo battery with an at least 1100mAh rating.

Peut-être le TOP de AÏWA et un de mes préférés avec le très performant TPR990 ... et le très ancien 930 d'allure 'rétro' et que j'adore toujours! ...
@80s_Boombox_Collector5 жыл бұрын
Les TPR's étaient de la plus haute qualité. Ce CS-880 a plus de basses, mais ça ne sonne pas aussi clair qu'un TPRs.
@fardelphilippe59915 жыл бұрын
