Don't listen when he says not to build walls. It will cost you a slot but the extra garrison and walls will save your ass when chaos shows up.

So I'm new to this series and I bought the game during the summer sale because it looked interesting. I booted it up and had the tutorial on but I quickly became overwhelmed with all the mechanics that game was pointing too and all the menus that popped up, as well as trying to pay attention to the story. After the first few turns I thought I was getting better until more options became available and I couldn't remember where to find everything. So I watched 5 or 6 other videos, some being an hour long, and I almost became more overwhelmed because those videos were just as cluttered as the tutorial. Then I found this video and it this was exactly what I was looking for. He explained what to focus on, when to end turns, and gave you direction on how you to play the game in different ways. 35 minutes later and I got more useful info about everything than all the other videos combined. Fucking Bravo and thank you, great video. Subscribed gladly!!
@goofball1_1342 жыл бұрын
the good part too, is once you finish a campaign which could take days to weeks honestly, every other campaign has the same roots so they will be far easier to pick up, the main advantages to a second campaign of a new faction or leader being different economic/political struggles and different unit types for roleplaying
@Sonserf3697 жыл бұрын

"I'm just going to build my military buildings in the capital." Noooooo... Why Joe, why? Some advice, don't do that. Capital cities can get up to rank 5 and there are plenty of buildings that require the city to be at rank 5 to build. If a building only goes up to rank 3, build it in a smaller city. Leave the slots in the Capital for building chains that *need* a rank city.
@lazerrhino7 жыл бұрын
It's fine, it will allow him to get those units earlier. When you get alot of money its easy to destroy a building and rebuild somewhere else.
@ArjanL19797 жыл бұрын
I agree it doesnt hurt at the early game, but as this is a "how to play" it does seem like bad advice. You get the smaller cities soon enough so I prefer to put the military stuff in the smaller cities early on
@scottbower64466 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the more recent games, but the amount of turns it takes to demolish and build back up a full chain (in the older TW games anyway) is often way more prohibitive than the cost
@ghostmutton7 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of newcomers are overwhelmed by the complexity of WH: Total War; this is definitely a well done introduction into how to get started. Hopefully it helps those who might otherwise have been hesitant about trying it out. Nice work Joe.

Are you kidding? Total War series is the simplest strategy franchise out there, even simpler than Civ and they have been dumbing it down even further.
@123pa1n7 жыл бұрын
to be honest its not all that complicated at all, specialy when u can cheese through the campaign, they should put this = "in order to build lategame unites go through 40 tech trees" back into those games. Instead of having this groth nonsense with 0 limitations. You just get urself 1 province build growth buildings in every city. Make sure ur not at war with anybody, disband ur army and just tech up like mad to have all lategame unites within a short amount of time.... its so stupid...
@123pa1n7 жыл бұрын
well nowadays you have to measure with League of Legends and CoD/PubG standarts..... compaired to those theres a little bit of complexity in TW games

I have to disagree, I was very overwhelmed when i started total war (campaign and i started from rome 1 to empire, trying them all out my first year) for the average gamer looking to try this out from say getting tired of shooters, it can be very overwhelming, It took me a while to get the hang of it, obviously when you already know how everything works its simple, but starting out the whole tactical concept can be a a lot to try to understand first time.

I know this comment is well over a year old but i just wanna say: TWWH 1 and 2 is litteraly Lord of the rings, with a bigger world more races, including the ones you would excpect from LOTR: High elves = Elves in Lotr. Dwarves = Dwarves, Greenskins = Orcs, Vampire Counts = The undead in the mountains, Empire, Bretonia = Humans and then you litteraly have 10 more races that arent in Lotr. And no they might not have Mummakils, but they have god damn War mammoths and Dinosaurs.

If you haven`t had these "siege" weapons and attacked them they would have expected you to come to them. So also if it was the opposite, if they attack you, they have to come to you, because if the time ends up who loses is who attacked and did not end the batlle in time. I have played all the latest total war games (Rome 2 through Warhammer 2) on a pc that can barely run the games. I have a combined 1k-2k hours on the games, all of which, every campaign and every battle, was played on the absolute lowest graphics and performance settings and with GOD AWFUL FPS. I played on very hard difficulty (would play on legendary if I had a better pc) and, despite the absolutely atrocious performance of the games on my pc, I still loved and continue to love all of them dearly. Get this game, it and the rest of the franchise are just that fun and addictive. PS. If you're really interested make sure to also try out some of the older titles as well, Rome 1 and Medieval 2 were some of the best games of my childhood.

It's really shallow when compared to the best TW games like Medieval 2. To me the warhammer TWs are fun, but there is little to no replay value and not much depth to the mechanics when compared to the best TWs. Things like autoresolve being broken and giving you an insanely better outcome than manual resolve 99% of the time and the best tactics to win being "cheese" tactics kinda ruin it for me.

@TheJacky22257 жыл бұрын
I don't think Joe realizes how much Total War has simplified it's gameplay to be playable for casuals. Mechanics like population growth, building choices more than just than 8 slots, armies not run by a general (like having mini armies), internal faction politics and auto resolve have been taken out or dumbed down to be easier. I played TW one and it's battles were amazing but it's campaign was so boring. I fought 5 manual battles in the whole 150 turn campaign in my empire campaign because auto resolve was broken. The AI isn't smarter, on legendary difficulty they just ramp up the stats of armies and give them free stacks. It's like playing against an idiot with cheat codes and they still lose. Just not satisfying as Rome I or Medieval.
@MrJokers19847 жыл бұрын
Jacky Douglas medieval ll was my favorite. But i belive they made it like this only for warhammer and not their historical titles. One can only hope
@TheJacky22257 жыл бұрын
Well Rome II and Attila have had a lot of problems that I believe is part of this trend of making the game more casual and that Warhammer was just another cog in the gearbox. But like you said, once can only hope.
@jamaly777 жыл бұрын
Jacky Douglas thankfully there are many amazing mods for nearly all tw titles (especially med2) so the people who are not bothered by outdated graphics can still enjoy these older games with new content.

CA Already that certain altered mechanics that are in the historical title and not in the Warhammer series will be back for the next historical title.
@Malus15317 жыл бұрын
+Jacky Douglas I've only ever played Attila and Warhammer 2, but I've heard multiple people say Attila is the hardest (I had a hard time learning it). How is Attila casual? +cracktober Compared to Attila I've found Warhammmer 2 to be pretty well optimized. I got around 50fps with a 1070 on 1440p ultra (then lowered settings a bit to reach 60). In Attila was getting like 15 fps at times on the campaign map on ultra and had to lower settings a lot more.
@Jodimest20037 жыл бұрын
AJ's recommendation of the campaign intro is a good one. One small thing to note is that playing the intro, even if you know what you're doing, can grant you a couple of extra units you wouldn't normally have. For instance, Malekith's intro grants you 2 cavalry units that you don't get if you skip the intro. *edit* Also, if you bring arty to a fight and the AI doesn't, then and lob a few missiles at the enemy AI, it'll goad their army into an attack even if they're on high ground

Something people ought to know about buildings. Joe says he prefers to build unit buildings in his capitols. While that is a smart move, as you can see the High Elf Barracks only goes up to Level III. All non-capitol settlements go up to Level III, which means that you can build a High Elf Barracks in a smaller Level III settlement, leaving a building spot in your capitol for a larger building which go levels 4+. Just a tip.

I really miss every roster being the same and having no completely balls off the wall shit like dinosaurs. Woe is me.
@Joker-yw9hl7 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion but I know too many people who say this game is dumbed down when they haven't even played it. My favourite total wars for nostalgia's sake are Rome 1 and medieval 2 but warhammer and warhammer 2 are way more complex in comparison. I don't know where this dumbed down myth has come from
@hildaenjoyer88627 жыл бұрын
Didn't you know? Not having a tax slider is apparently dumbing down the game to the point it's unplayable, despite the fact TW has NEVER been about complex campaigns, the emphasis has always been on war and more battles. Rome 1 is simple as fuck with next to no complexity. Warhammer at least has tons of divesrity between factions and insane replayability. There's next to no difference in playstyle between Rome or Egypt while Chaos and Wood Elves are almost completely new games.

Joker uhm the whole campaign gameplay is dumbed down with the diplomacy and cities with taxes ect. Now you can only toggle it on/off. And i have played wh1 about 200 hours every faction, but that was one of the biggest letdown with the game+ the end game was pretty boring
@hildaenjoyer88627 жыл бұрын
There's very, VERY little diplomacy in the Warhammer lore, though.

Kinda surprised Joe likes Warhammer. IMO def a downgrade from previous titles/bad dlc
@Joker-yw9hl7 жыл бұрын
Comradcommodore have you played the warhammer games? Only asking because most of its critics are people who just refuse to play it
@Comradcommodore7 жыл бұрын
Joker just referring to the total war games not the whole series. But yeah I put about 40 hours into it, just didn't like it. The visuals where awesome, but the game play just felt dumbed down to me. And the dlc to me was just terrible (it's been bad for awhile with the total war series)
@alexsitaras65087 жыл бұрын
it is simplified and the campaign isn't as hard or punishing and attila or the older titles but i still have fun with it

I'm actually kind of glad you're waiting for the update so all of the empires can be represented. The multiplayer will be sprinting for weeks trying to figure out every strategy for every faction, and the singleplayer will be all kind of interesting from so many different positions. Good solid tutorial overall for newbies. You covered everything a new player needs to know (I think your estimates for confederation were a little off, but meh, details. Just my experience so far). Well done. Have a like for your efforts. Eagerly awaiting your full thoughts on the review.

Great tutorial, just wanna add a few things. BUILD ALL THE WALLS. When chaos comes you probably will not be able to win against them in a single battle and they LOVE to attack your minor settlements. Those walls will both give you a defensive position and more garrison armies. Other thing is, (this is for you as well Joe) dont build your low tier military buildings in your capital. Divide them up between the minor settlements and build the advanced buildings in your capital since minor settlements can only go up to lvl3 and your major settlements can go up to lvl5, advanced buildings require lvl5.

Joe, First I’d like to say that I appreciate you coming out and saying what games your reviewing next. And Second, I’ve been with you and watched your show for a long time. I’m not saying I’ve been with you since day one but I have seen you struggle emotionally, mentally and physically with constantly being creative, captivating, and working to the bone to get all the games that you can out. And on top of that you have all these fans that can turn on you at any moment. Frankly On certain projects your passion for a game or a series shows through. And I think you need to do these passion projects for yourself more often. I think it will help with the grind of playing a game for hours and hours, writing a huge script and doing all the dress up stuff at the beginning. It’s a lot of work. And that’s just for one review. I know that this type of grinding is what makes for more successful videos. And in turn a more successful you. But for the benefit of your mental and emotional state. Do Your Passion.

One of the most useful tips for new Total War players is during battle: don't just right click the whole army, the'll all line up. You can press alt button and drag your army with the left mouse button wherever you want without breaking your deploying formation. You can do that with anything you select.

I am extremely relieved that you are making a review for it. After skipping entirely Total War Warhammer 1 last year, and seemingly doing the same this year, I was getting a bit concerned you'd never review a total war game. Kudos joe, and keep up the good work.

total war has been my favorite franchise for a long time up there with command and conquer. I really hope they do us old fans a favor and honestly just take medieval 2 and all it's dlc's and just revamp it. Add some online multiplayer but keep the core game because m2 was honestly my favorite game of the franchise because it felt like everything i did had a huge impact on my empire. Losing your armies actually meant you were screwed in some situations. I love the TWW series as well but I feel like we need a game that takes you to think and strategize every move you do. Because the recent games seem easy because you can steamroll with 2 armies across the map. Keep up the good work Joe one of my fav channels right here :)

One tip Joe. You dont build the low tier military buildings in the Capital. It's a waste of a slot. All buildings that go beyond tier 4 must be built in the Capital. this is the best solution as it allows you to recruit everything in every province, no need to waste time specializing certain provinces. For example that Barracks, the max level it reaches it Tier 3. That means it can be put at minor settlements. Also, at least in the Vortex Campaign, you need to wall all your settlements. Annoying Chaos and Skaven invasions whenever you start a Ritual. With all your settlements walled you can pretty much defend them with the garrison.
