The fact that kislev is recommended for new players is crazy, I play on very hard on every total war game and I got SLAPPED playing kislev, forcing me to drop to normal, the amount of portals that spawn near kislev I just kept getting spread and over run by constant stacks, and plagues

If you take out the rats in the West, and the Vampire counts in the south nobody really bothers you. Eventually the ogre in the south west will start beating up the Empire though around turn 85. You can use agents to close portals it costs 1500 gold. The game does let you do a portal close fight in forced march. If you still have problems I recommend doing slaneesh's realm first. If you don't want to hold an area you took you can give it to the nearby ai via diplomacy. If you click balance offer to they offer you a decent amount of gold. There are 3 items she can offer you usually at the last portal that are just broken. A weapon that will double the damage your lord does. Just has crazy stats. A crown that gives +25 public order permanently to everything you own. "not that useful for kislev cause you should be building temples anyways". An ancillary that gives you 100 army exp per turn, 200% exp gain on the equipped lord, and 20% movement bonus. This last one is the most common, and if you get it in first portal you will have a level 50 lord by the time the enemy gets to level 20.

@@JohnFreedman0 On normal difficulty maybe nobody bothers you. But thats not how a VH/legenday Kislev campaign goes. The Kislev start isnt that hard. You can conquer eastern oblast, praag and hellpit and confed the two minor Kislev factions relatively easily before the first rift opens. But thats when the shit hits the fan: after the first rifts open, you will be discovered by chaos undivided, khorne and nurgle and you will be faced with a never ending chaostide.

@@captstainstain In case of being in legendary Kislev is one of the easier choices in my opinion. Mostly cause the ai gets melee cheat boosts, and every unit they have is ranged. Lots of hero kiting cheese may be required.

in Multipalyer or AI matches you can also select the faction banner and color. that is very new for TW warhammer. we never had this without any NPC faction unlocker mods. just press the arrow buttons next to the banners and you can change your faction color and banner to one of your liking

Depending on your faction you’ll either hate the campaign or love it, and props to CA for an actual mini tutorial. You want my honest opinion? Wait for Mortal Empires, the game has lots of bugs and balancing issues that SERIOUSLY need to be ironed out. Invading the realms of chaos *ESPECIALLY* Tzeentch’s realm was beyond a clusterfuck, the whole mechanic sucks and leaves you with horrible debuffs on your faction leader. Immortal Empires will be where it’s at, I’d rather do the Vortex in WH2 AGAIN, than even touch another campaign in WH3… Some factions are just not fun to play, where others like Khorne are an absolute blast.

Yep. Nurgle (At least for me sucked). Considering Nurgle heavily depends on his plagues to weaken enemies, but you can't do that for quest battles/survival battles. Survival battles also need something like "Spend 500 supplies to refill all ammo". Going in with heavily ranged based armies hurts. Even a lot of the settlement battles hurt ranged base armies, cause the settlement blocks a huge chunk of projectiles.

I mean specifically, just give me a large AoE that refills all the units in that area's ammo. Specifically out of combat.

More power to you :) It is however a boon to the franchise that we have more options to suit everyone’s preferences beyond the single player sandbox. Casual skirmish battles, sprawling 8-player campaigns, you name it. You don’t have to play against the min-maxers, you can play with your own mates against the AI at your own pace.

Yeah, I don't know why the game recommends Kislev and the Daemon Prince as the first campaigns. I would say that Ogre Kingdom, Cathay, or Khorne are much better for a first playthrough. And you should definitely start your first campaign on normal difficulty, even if you're a Total War veteran. The early game economy is weaker in general and things can get very tough at the beginning. I find it more fun to start at normal and then raise the difficulty higher later on as I get my economy up and running.

WH3 has tons and tons of problems. Broken pathfinding, ranged units running around when given attack order, units forgetting their orders, lords freezing when fighting each other, bugged supply lines mass and charge not calculating properly so chariots are useless etc. All of those things work in 2. So yeah, everything is fun with friends, but WH3 need lots of work to be a good game.

Some attacks don't even work [Zhao Ming and Ming Yao's dragon forms's attacks constantly miss], sometimes units just ignore collision and move through each other for a while till the game remembers that this shouldn't happen, the game's optimization is just off, etc.

@@termitreter6545 At least Vortex campaign is more tolerable that you don't need to do campaign objectives if you don't want to: you can straight up conquer the world and ignore the vortex. The WH3 campaign with rifts opening every province and spreading corruption and the race against other factions to get souls in chaos realms doesn't reward you doing so. And going in chaos realms is pretty much of a pain to do when you can get negative traits and can be pain to navigate except for AI.

Something that I wish the game would make more apparent to you is that the chaos gates can be closed by a hero, unattached from the army, for a price, instead of fighting the battle. I found this out after having to run two armies as kislev trying to simultaneously defend my borders and close gates to cut off corruption. If I had known I would've kept a hero in every territory and my main army would've had a lot more time to consistently remove the chaos realm debuffs, while my second army couldve prioritized the constant northern raids. I also probably would've won the race with the church as the ice court that way since the ice court let's you pump out high level heros. The diplomacy system really saved me that run because I prioritized stabilizing and allying the dwarves and empire to the south. As a dwarf main I was surprised how well kislev benefits from a couple trollhammer units in its roster.

we finally got one. i've been playing these games ALOT since tww1, and i love them deeply. i'm not even a massive warhammer fan, but its just such a cool world, and its great to play with fantasy units. i agree with alot of joe's points, i get so tired of those settlement battles as they are just a swarming of some points... and i cannot manage to do the objective while trying to take on all the people attacking me early game, so i usually end up skipping a couple which just leads to annoying busywork later in the campaign, or just a striaght up loss without a reload.

The settlement battles become a chore very quickly making you auto-resolve them if possible. Like Joe said, CA needs to do something such as making them only playable through like tier 2 garrisons or tier 3 towns. If CA could also have a setting to have other factions compete in the campaign or do it at your own pace that would be sweet too.

It would be cool to have unique towns and cities especially if they are in regions that benefit a certain type of trade. Currently it’s not worth it considering AI in these games are only buffed and brain dead it’s not worth it.

After delaying the game for 6 months and they still can't release with the Mortal Empires Campaign. When WH2 released they were actually apologetic that ME didn't release with the game, and it came out a month after release. Here we are 1 month after the release of WH3 and the Devs just made a post saying ME is nowhere in sight. All this with CA completely ignoring the feedback from the KZbinrs who had early access and pointed out multiple times that the Chaos Realm campaign was hot garbage. Which is why WH3 concurrent players has had the sharpest decline in the first 2 days of launch since Thrones of Brittania. 90% of the people who bought WH3 are no longer playing it. NINETY PERCENT. Let that sink in. But Joe gives it an 8/10. I don't know how much CA paid him for this review but just like the game, it's Hot Garbage. Here's you're real rating for WH3 - 5/10. Save your money until it's playable.

Joe should not be reviewing this game. He does not have the hours into the trilogy to justify him reviewing WH3. That is my issue with this angry review. I have something like 3200 hours between all 3 games, with just over 200 hours in WH3, and 2200 hours in WH2. I skimmed through some of their livestreams when they were playing WH3, and you can see that they lack the deep understanding of the warhammer trilogy to truly understand why WH3 is bad on release. Joe's perspective shines with releases that don't require hundreds of hours to play to truly be in a position to give a critical review.

Everyone can disable the chaos rift campaign mechanic. Meaning you just play the map painter conquest game you wanted to. It's like 3 steps to do. Download a pack file editor, change one setting, edit one number that marks the turn the rifts start. Either delay the start event or disable it completely. There's a simple guide on reddit, just look for how to disable chaos rifts.

Should just be an option but cool it can be disabled,I think his problem was more of the ai being able to cross the maelstroms so its becomes super speed based and race like especially on hard difficulties.

It's basically a DLC of TW WH2 which was an DLC of TW WH1, I thought you of all would punish this game due to charging full price for basically nothing new, besides some factions and campaign. I feel Joe with how the chaos rifts ruin the pacing. Cant wait for the Immortal empires since that true sandbox I feel is the true game experience. I was really disappointed with when after first patch the desktop hard crashes returned, it made my life miserable enough in TWH2.

As a new player I was fairly hyped after the prologue. I was having fun, doing my stuff, preparing and advancing in my pace. starting the campaign I was quite shocked after 20-30 rounds, that this is not the way, the game wants me to play now. this rift mechanic, forcing me to rush, without notice and without being prepared destroyed my hype and I stopped playing.

Yeah. The right mechanic is horrible. Game ends in 150 turns and your ability to actually do anything and expand is severely arrested by it. I beat the game in the 3rd day of release as KHORNE on legendary...had 2 armies...2 provinces...usually could only afford one army despite the insane amount of sacking and burning I was doing in Kislev after teleporting then with an unstoppable army that could solo 4 stacks... The auto resolve was also really painful and the game forced me to fight battles I was overwhelmingly strong in. Felt like a big waste of time.

What I like the most about Joe and his crew is that they all genuinely get on with each other and feed into each other's strengths and quirks, and they have been doing this for years and years. No ego trips or petty stuff with them. Just a few guys with shared interests supporting each other.

I'm with AJ...I HATE pacing...I tend to skip games entirely because of pacing. I love zombies, but I skipped all of Dead Rising because of the timer... I may even skip this one entirely, because I know exactly what he's talking about with the A.I.'s objectives...same thing happened with Civilization: Beyond Earth... I did get that one, but it is slower at lower difficulties, and they never fixed the satellite issue...

It's possible as range is still meta. But honestly I think they do well to experiment with a WWI total war first to nail down ranged mechanics and campaign logistics that work and are fun without needing to do entirely separate models and animations for every faction.

Warhammer 3 sucks. They need to ditch the whole realms of chaos mechanic. There is absolutely no incentive to aggressively expand across the map because doing so only leave you open to invasion by the countless rifts that keep opening up across the map. What's the point in even having a campaign map when you have to keep sending your armies into the rift to collect souls. All I want to do is conquer the map but I can't because CA designed the game so you have to take part in the race for souls. No souls, no victory. I don't want to collect souls I just want to conquer lands, manage cities and annihilate my enemies. The game doesn't let me do that instead it forces me to engage in long drawn out missions inside the chaos realm. I don't care about the chaos realm I just want to conquer the damn map. This game is trash!

Xcom2 is absolute classic, usually I like take time, thats why I dont reallyu like these TW games, but Xcom timers never bothered me, you just have to deal with it, its the constant tension. Xcom is absolute classic. I played TW warhammer 2 mortal empires, and I can see the brilliance of it, but its just not for me. I dont know, my taste is very slow burn strategies, like Civ on marathon speed or Stellaris on 3x tech cost. I can play Stellaris for 8 hour intervals and never go to war in that span, just micro manage stuff, where TW you just load and you already in a war, thats crazy. That said, weirdly, I can recommend TW to more people, even tho I myself do not like it that much, compared to Stellaris. Stellaris is just my kind of game, but its not for the masses like TW. Also, man these games are demanding, my PC isnt terrible, but it doesnt run TW very well, its the most demanding strategy game I know, I wonder how much that anti pirate thing tanks the performance?

Big fan of WH2, but with this release I felt underwhelmed. My positives have been a lot of QOL improvements, cool and detailed campaign map and battle maps, cool new races/units, and thematic campaigns for each faction. But my negatives have come in pretty strong too, the mission UI clutters the right side of the screen, too much red, the chaos rifts drive you to play defense the whole campaign, unit variety in the chaos races is low making them feel too samey, Settlement battles look great but can feel sluggish and drawn out due to the small walk ways where only 1-3 units can fight at a time. The new fortifications are cool but can make the pathing AI go crazy sending your units to the other side of the settlement. Also in general the settlement AI puts 1 stack units in weird places instead of holding key chokes or something. The rifts themselves take too many turns to complete and leave you very vulnerable in harder difficulties as the AI runs through them like a breeze. I had 3 hard crashes and 1 time where the smoke textures turned into black squares, something I've only ever seen in star citizen lol. Performance stuttering and bug issues, atleast I hope it's a bug, where everytime I loaded the game I would have to start a new campaign because it wouldn't let me load my save until I was in a brand new campaign. I'm super anti nickel and diming, and am therefore hugely opposed to the blood dlc bullshit and hiding a race behind a paywall. And no, just because the past games did it, or 'its free because you can preorder' isn't an excuse to segment a completed chunk of the game. You lose 1/8th(if you really wanna factor all the races as equally satisfying and of equal depth) of value, because you didn't wanna blindly preorder, Which is a huge slap in the face when you consider the amount of broken at launch and lacking in content triple A games that have come out in the past 7 or so years.(I'll name a few of the top of my head, fallout 76, Anthem, BF5, BF2042, B4B, Avengers, Halo 5, Destiny 2, Cyberpunk) Overall, there's potential here for sure for an 8 maybe just maybe a 9 with mortal empires/performance fixes and more races/units added, but at launch Im thinking a 6/10, maybe 7 if you had better luck with performance

Yeah 6 is about right. Most of the improvements were already in 3 kingdoms or mods for that or WH2. So much needs to be fixed. Patches have been extremely underwhelming. Will probably get to an 8 once there are more patches or mods but so disillusioned with what the CA team have done so far.

I got 1 and 2 for sale a few weeks before 3 came out, but I wasn't sure if I'd like them. After a REALLY rough start, I fell in love with 2, and got some DLC while I waited for 3. The tutorial for 3 is much better. I'd actually say the only one I've ever seen for a grand scale strategy or 4X game that was competent, but it actually goes far beyond competent and into pretty good. And after that I went straight for my Deathguard's Grandfather. I really hope they can get around to a 40K Total War so I can play Tyranids. As for the campaign... on Normal at least, I fucked up the first attempt at getting the one in Tzeentch's, and completely skipped the second. So Skarbrand was getting their 3rd when I was getting my 1st. But the ability to use the portals to teleport to them, or camp at the Forge of Souls when they have 4, means it wasn't completely a race. I ended up making sure no one near me was getting the souls, by strategically going into the ones they needed, or attacking their countries directly. So I only had to worry about Skarbrand, who I really went after hard toward the end. He just had to go to the Forge of Souls at the end, so I killed him right before the portals spawned, grabbed my last soul, and went to the Forge. Ended up winning even though I started pretty far behind. I did dislike being unable to move at all after going through a portal though.

So the reason for lack of blood is a shortage in Red Pixels, they had used up their allocation in the menu's and backdrops. it wasn't possible to get more because not only other games in the same release window had acquired them, its was also released during the Valentines period where they are in high demand for all the rose and heart emojis used during this period.

I mean every new entry of Total War Warhammer has only had 4 factions. Warhammer 1 had empire, dwarfs, orcs, and vampires. With chaos warriors (bare bones at launch mind you) being dlc. Warhammer 2 had high elves, dark elves, lizardmen, and skaven with I don't believe and day one dlc. Warhammer 3 has Kislev, Cathay, Chaos (realistically the other 4 are just chaos undivided chopped up), and Ogre kingdoms for day one dlc. So while there are only are only 3 mainline factions at launch as compared to 4 (not counting DLC). One of those factions is the most unique yet, and has a absolutely massive roster and diversity. So I would say it balances itself out. After immortal empires comes out and a couple faction DLCS there will be plenty to go around. We talking like 25+

20:40 I'm pretty sure TWW 2 had this feature too, as I remember seeing it a lot. It would mark what units were going to die in auto-resolve. It didn't tell you how many you would lose from your surviving units, but it would tell you what was going to be wiped.

Yeah Kislev and daemon faction are super hard for your 1st campaign. I have over 2k hours in 2nd game and Ice court campaign kinda kicked my ass. Once I learned the rift mechanic and how to properly prepare it got alot easier. Saving gold and getting your faction leader ready for the events is key

The prologue may be newbie friendly. But holy shit the main campaign is not. Its tough. I also prefer the settlement battles to open fields and obstructive hills, so i love this game. So glad we finally got town Battles. The community has been asking for siege improvements since 2016.

Creative assembly is the best studio to work on this. They were so loyal to the lore, listened to the fans, mod support, mortal empires with all the dlcs and games added together is just incredible. All the amazing changes are fantastic. My only issue I had was the auto resolve balance but there will probably be a mod for that

There really is no reason to go back to wh1 for anything review related. All game 1 factions only received their major reworks in game 2 and it wasn't back ported. So you'd basically be playing an inferior experience

Damn, I haven't played a Total War game since Shogun (the first in the series, I think), but I can imagine how fun it would be to have a few friends commanding divisions of your army in a multiplayer session. The only thing cooler would be if they implemented a "fog of war" type system for communications, where you can only communicate by dispatching a messenger by horseback to your generals.
