Free rig was originally a Korean technique. That bellows shad is a super versatile bait.

Just bought some of these...pretty cool looking baits! I just put the 3.8" white on a 4/0 light weighted swimbait screw-lock hook...seems to fit real good...gonna play around with that & see what happens

Good stuff. Also just weightless hooked through nose on busting fish. When they are school smashing shad on surface throw it out let it sink slowly. I think it looks better than a fluke style bait.

Do the ribs ever inhibit the hook set when rig vertical instead of flat?

I always rig it flat if I’m not using an exposed hook setup like on a spinner bait or chatter bait. Those are the only times I rig it vertical.

Not understanding how that "free rig" is the same as a carolina rig which brings the bait to the bottom and you drag it in. If the weight is sliding free and drops to the bottom on it's own, won't the bait falling just create a bunch of slack line and make bite detection difficult or impossible?

It’s in the same family in my opinion. Bite are hard to detect but not impossible. As you work the bait the bait catches up to the weight. It’s not completely on its own.

I really like the bait but I wish the packaging was better. The bag is too big to fit in my normal storage and I had one leak that juice all over the rest of my tackle warehouse order.

Just got a pack of 3.8, opened it up, gave it a gentle tug to see the ribbing and an inch of tail broke off. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This thing won’t last one fish.
