Apparently the band members met Heath Ledger through mutual friends in his hometown of Perth when they were touring Australia .. the story as told by Brock (probably, I can't remember where I read the interview) goes that they got to talking on a boat cruise about this song and concept which Heath then volunteered to make the video for, then many months later when they presumed the famous young movie star had completely forgotten about or ignored the project they received the full synopsis from him in the mail out of the blue. This is one reason why they made it exactly as he had envisioned it in his honour after his tragic and untimely death. Heath was a great, great actor (everyone knows that) but he was also a great creative artist and budding director with the world at his feet. He made his own video for Black Eyed Dog by Nick Drake but that has never been released publicly, and I've been looking for about 10 years now, and wanted to bring a biopic to the screen starring himself as Nick of course. Apart from everything he had going on including a new wife and young child, he was a man of his word as proven by this tale. We'll never know what else he might have achieved but the world is definitely the poorer without him :/ Rest in peace Heath, you made your mark.

The animated video which was "fully conceived down to the last detail but unfinished" when Ledger died in January 2008, it was completed by members of Los Angeles art collective/production company The Masses, namely Daniel Auber (co-director and illustrator), Norris Houk (lead animator), Jade Taglioli (animator) and Sara Cline (producer). Ledger who had also been part of The Masses, received a director's credit.

Something I love about modest mouse is that they put so much care into the instrumental portion of their songs. So much rock is built off of a frankly boring base of guitar and drums. It gets to the point that many songs are indistinguishable if you take away the voice.

Song lyrics can have more than one meaning, and the people who insist this video is about humanity's woes and not about whale slaughter, are incorrect... I mean, the video's message is perfectly clear. Google: “King Rat” Modest Mouse Video Directed by Heath Ledger Supports Sea Shepherd In this video, Ledger was opposing the illegal commercial whale hunts by the Japanese and others. To raise awareness of the problems, the video depicts whales poaching humans to make pet food. Proceeds from iTunes purchases of the song were donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, with full approval of the band. Respect to Modest Mouse.

I just realized what the title means. King Rat is in reference to rat kings, where multiple rats get their tails stuck together and are bound to one another. In most cases the rat king dies because none of the rats work together to move or untangle themselves. They all run in a different direction and never get anywhere. Much like our society right now.

That is exactly how my mind and sees it too. I love this song and video. I show it to people when they ask about my music taste. Never goes well. They are usually very confused about what they heard and basically hate it. Poor mofos can't appreciate real art in music. That's how I realize there is no future in me and that person agreeing on much of anything. Oh well it weeds them all out so I can still be that bureaucratic Criminal in a world that is just broken in so many ways. Just like me.
@trans_rights_ftw6 ай бұрын
@@RaguDumas It's totally valid to dislike a song, that doesn't mean someone doesn't appreciate/understand its artistic merit or that you two won't agree on anything- art is extremely subjective and that's part of the beauty of it. I love how everybody is just criticising the video and not giving a shit about the song's lyrics.

I really love how they usually add an environmental twist to their music on top of the true meaning. 💙

I feel like this was directed after Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for a month. If this was before that, I'm afraid to see what's in his journal.

This ended with "What do you have to say for yourself?" I mean, come on, the meaning here is so obvious. I keep hearing people joke about it but I'm worried it's actually blown over most people's heads.

Most people aren't ready to accept the message in this video. That's why they choose to ignore it and focus on other things.
@RadiantBlue44 жыл бұрын
The song and video have two separate meanings. The song is about crooks committing a breaking and entering and getting caught, and thrown in jail. The video is more obvious and in your face with the message.

Now this is truly an example of a music video that nailed the accompanying ideas of its lyrics. It's disturbing - exactly as it should be, giving real consideration to the lyrics. I think MM would benefit from a more "epic" take on some of their music videos. In a similar, but extremely different, way that The Decemberists always load their songs with fantastic social commentary and symbolism, MM's music videos should have no hesitation in being splayed and expressive. I think Dashboard is a good example of an MM music video also done right. Folks will mock the folksy and silly qualities of it, but it provided a narrative that seems so appropriate for MM's music. RIP Jeremiah Green.

yeah, because, "Whale, what do you have to say for yourself?" makes more sense than, "Well, what you you have to say for yourself?" The song actually has nothing to do about whales, or whaling (at least not directly). The video is just a story that's being used to demonstrate the same thing the song is saying, a similar idea that King Rat (the book) is putting forth. Also, look at the lyrics.
