I'm from Greece. We have a rich mythology, and apart from that, I was interested from a young age in various other mythologies, such as Egyptian, Nordic (viking), Hindu, Meso-American mythologies, etc. I was never into Finnish mythology. I didn't know it was a thing. I was ignorant. That's it until I read Don Rosa's "Quest for Kalevala" in mid 2000s. It was stunning and yes, I learned the basics about Kalevala from an Uncle Scrooge story. Isn't it epic? It made me searching more and more about Finnish customs and traditions. Thank you Finland for contributing to humanity's global mythology pantheon and thank you people for your time reading this comment. Cheers.

Keno Ron Rosa is one of the biggest man in Comics ever born. Do you know Tuomas from Nightwish released a full album about the story of Uncle Scrooge by Don Rosa? I' am a huge fan and I read it to my own daughters a few weeks agos. This book changed my life.

@@simonaubert3778 Ofc I know the album, it's one of my favourites! He grasped the essence of Rosa's masterpiece quite perfectly in my opinion. The book had a great impact on me as well. I still remember the first time I read it. It was 2004, the day my mom got it for me and the same night (it was Friday) I read it from start to finish covered in my bedsheets. I just couldn't stop reading. Uncle Scrooge was already my favourite character and imagine discovering an epic life story of your favourite character...

Truly epic. Each part had a distinct tone and story to it, which is hard not to sound repetitive over a 25 minute song. For some reason, though, the absolute most satisfying part to me was the hammer striking the anvil throughout part five. Absolutely awesome.

My knowledge of the Kalevala was limited to the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 version of the rather goofy movie "The Day The Earth Froze", and this is making the story sound far more epic. Which makes sense, since a quest to put the sun back in the sky and save the world from endless winter is about as epic as you can get.

Proem to the Kalevala: Mastred by desire impulsive, By a mighty inward urging, I am now ready for singing, Ready to begin the chanting, Of our Nation's ancient folk-song, Handed down from by-gone ages. In my mouth the words are melting, From my lips the tones are gliding, From my tongue they wish to hasten; When my willing teeth are parted, When my ready mouth is opened, Songs of ancient wit and wisdom Hasten from me not unwilling. Golden friend, and dearest brother, Brother dear of mine in childhood, Come and sing with me the stories, Come and chant with me the legends, Legends of the times forgotten, Since we now are here together, Come together from our roamings. Seldom do we come for singing, Seldom to the one, the other, O'er this cold and cruel country, O'er the poor soil of the Northland. Let us clasp our hands together That we thus may best remember. Join we now in merry singing, Chant we now the oldest folk-lore, That the dear ones all may hear them, That the well-inclined may hear them, Of this rising generation. These are words in childhood taught me, Songs preserved from distant ages, Legends they that once were taken From the belt of Wainamoinen, From the forge of Ilmarinen, From the sword of Kaukomieli, From the bow of Youkahainen, From the pastures of the Northland, From the meads of Kalevala. These my dear old father sang me When at work with knife and hatchet These my tender mother taught me When she twirled the flying spindle, When a child upon the matting By her feet I rolled and tumbled. Incantations were not wanting Over Sampo and o'er Louhi, Sampo growing old in singing, Louhi ceasing her enchantment. In the songs died wise Wipunen, At the games died Lemminkainen. There are many other legends, Incantations that were taught me, That I found along the wayside, Gathered in the fragrant copses, Blown me from the forest branches, Culled among the plumes of pine-trees, Scented from the vines and flowers, Whispered to me as I followed Flocks in land of honeyed meadows, And the many-colored Kimmo. Many runes the cold has told me, Many lays the rain has brought me, Other songs the winds have sung me; Many birds from many forests, Oft have sung me lays n concord Waves of sea, and ocean billows, Music from the many waters, Music from the whole creation, Oft have been my guide and master. Sentences the trees created, Rolled together into bundles, Moved them to my ancient dwelling, On the sledges to my cottage, Tied them to my garret rafters, Hung them on my dwelling-portals, Laid them in a chest of boxes, Boxes lined with shining copper. Long they lay within my dwelling Through the chilling winds of winter, In my dwelling-place for ages. Shall I bring these songs together From the cold and frost collect them? Shall I bring this nest of boxes, Keepers of these golden legends, To the table in my cabin, Underneath the painted rafters, In this house renowned and ancient? Shall I now these boxes open, Boxes filled with wondrous stories? Shall I now the end unfasten Of this ball of ancient wisdom, These ancestral lays unravel? Let me sing an old-time legend, That shall echo forth the praises Of the beer that I have tasted, Of the sparkling beer of barley. Bring to me a foaming goblet Of the barley of my fathers, Lest my singing grow too weary, Singing from the water only. Bring me too a cup of strong-beer, It will add to our enchantment, To the pleasure of the evening, Northland's long and dreary evening, For the beauty of the day-dawn, For the pleasure of the morning, The beginning of the new-day. Often I have heard them chanting, Often I have heard them singing, That the nights come to us singly, That the Moon beams on us singly, That the Sun shines on us singly; Singly also, Wainamoinen, The renowned and wise enchanter, Born from everlasting Ether Of his mother, Ether's daughter.

greetings from Finland, look up humppa and real polkka and see how fast you want to burn down out entire nation. Once you move deeper beyond the amazing neofolk and metal you will quickly discover old drunks slurring out folksongs about nationalism and alcohol xD in all seriousness tho, not taking anything away from this song or finnish music in general but do realize that this is all inspired by swedish folk and metal. No surprise because we have a deep cultural and political link to sweden. Finland is essentially an island cut off from the rest of europe by russia and the baltic sea so most influences came trough sweden as many Finns speak swedish

I feel the same. Born and raised in the South-East of Spain, in the South of Alicante, dry, scorched-like weeds growing like wildfire as far as the eye can see in the middle of an area where orchards, some wetlands and thousands of pine trees and other, what I call, "non-beautiful" vegetation decorate our landscapes. I came to live in Barcelona and, believe me, the situation doesn't change much. I would very much love to feel around something much more different than this. Snowy steppes, high mountains with whitened tops, houses of wood and stone beautifully built up and the only vegetation were to be deep emerald-coloured lush forests of the evergreen type of trees. So, summarizing, and forgive me for my passionate enthusiasm regarding the topic... Yeah, I understand the feeling😆 P.S. Don't you ever apologize for your English. It's not just that it's good enough already, but at the very least you are one of the only Spaniards who tries his best to speak something different than his own language. Cheers for that, mate!

Ah, sweet algorithms of youtube! I found this well of spirits by clicking on a proposed vid and voilá! Antti Martikainen, you have spun auditory yarns of fine folk music to eventually weave a massive epic tale of old. These pieces of music ranging from soft whispers to roaring of raw power truly invoke the spirits of this mythic world. Your creation resonates beautifully with the souls attuned to hear this majesty. Thank you.

I noticed that it has elements of a bolero but instead of repeating with more added each time, it seems to mirror itself, starting from the beginning going to the end at 5 and then back to the beginning with more added... as if you're revisiting the song more each time you hear it and gaining more perspective of the picture it paints. Beautiful work and brilliantly composed!

Good stuff! The Finn-folk are part of the wide-spread Finno-Ugric language-group/people... Neither Germanic nor Slavic, but a Siberian warrior-people with a long history with both... Unique language and many fine sagas and songs. Also some of the most beautiful women in Europa! Gotta like this music and recommend a reading of an English translation of the Kalevala, interesting stuff.
@MrSunGalaxy6 жыл бұрын
Wonderful composition. When you listen, music leads to somewhere in the distance, into fields and forests, to nature. It seems that you are immersed in the old times, the antiquity of times that have already passed. Obviously, that's why the name is Kalevala - the legends of the Karelian-Finnish poetic epic.

@@eternalchemaline4833 It's a bit too mellow for metal-heads. Maybe as a background noise? Not really interesting enough tho.

@@Mp57navy Every genre of music has its fans. In my opinion, I never downvote for music that I don't like if its made with skills and passion. I just stop listening to it and go on with music I like (or even not, I'm always ready to discover new styles of music). Downvoting is for things that are badly made and sure this is not the case here, so I doubt that real metalheads downvoted this. Maybe fanatic religious people downvoted because it's kind of pagan and it's about a spherical Earth. But no problem, calculated today the downvotes are only 1.34 pct.
