This is very inspiring! I tried this yesterday with my team yesterday. As we all do remote work, so we used Figma to simulate the whole process. First, I created some sticky note templates, let the teammates create an empty page to write things on the notes. The Next step, the facilitator, which is me myself, collect all the notes and put them on the main page. (we call it brainstorm lobby). Now, the funny part is to put dots on the notes. We end up with accidentally someone else's dot, kinda messy but finally, it turned out well! Though it took us 40 minutes to complete the first session. Guess next time we can do better than this.

Great stuff. What makes these work best is a great cohesive culture. IE having fun working together or social times together etc. Because if the culture is quicksand, any collob session only highlights that. Im a HUGE fan of quick and sharp energetic meetings that don't last an hour. So much more gets done in very little time. Keep up the great work.

I like to add the task of each person reading out their ideas as they post them. If the team has the instruction to cluster like ideas as they post, it forces them to listen to the other ideas rather than just waiting for their turn to speak. Voting can then be done by cluster rather than individual post-it. Additionally, the reading out loud of ideas could stimulate other ideas (or "yes ands" related to an existing idea) and these could then be added to the wall. My 2c :)

@@AJSmart not much longer than the group having to read/decipher/understand the written post-its. And it creates a bit more excitement about the process and the ideas. If you extend the workshop to 30mins, you could do a formal "yes and" exercise for the top 3 ideas. Post the 3 ideas at the top of the board and then everyone adds new elements to the idea (1 per post-it), also reading out loud to the group.

I have a few questions: 1-) When people are sticking their own posts, all the participants are watching he(her) doing it? In this case, all participants will know which idea is from. This will kinda influence the result s. Or is it done ins a way participants cants see it? ==> Maybe turning the flipchart can partially solve this. 2-) When goes to voting I guess that the follow the crowd effect can happen.When people tend to choose the winner to follow. So hugely interfering on clear results. ===> Maybe giving each post-it a code (number), and each voter notes for himself on a papel the ideas numbers they liked the most and the number of its 10 votes desired for each. And after that the facilitator can put on board the voting results. Does that above makes any sense or have any value?

When it's time to put the stickies on the board, just ask participants to first put them on the table in a pile. Then the facilitator in front of the group mixes them up. Everybody should use the same colour pens so they can't identify one particular person's notes.

I like the recommendation of capturing ideas in a visual way and the dot voting to prioritise. However for me this structure is missing the core element of brainstorming - collaboration. Brainstorming meant to be a collaborative exercise that allows the participants to talk and build on each others ideas and inspires someone to come up with a truly new amazing insight that came from hearing what everyone else was saying earlier. This is how you end up with whole being greater than sum of the parts. I can easily see small adjustments to the meeting structure described in this video to make it collaborative. I would be interested to hear your views on this concern?

I always struggle with these short timings. I've done plenty of lightning decision jam and had to increase the timings a lot. According to this video every participant should understand 50 ideas, compare them to her 10 ideas, and do all this in 180 seconds. Not realistic. I try to overcome this by reading out loud the sticky notes as the facilitator, but reading also takes a lot of time. I ask them to evaluate the ideas in their heads while I'm reading, but i haven't found the ultimate solution yet.

Hey Istvan, great to hear you’re LDJ’ing! With this exercise you can do with any sized group, each member only picks their ten best ideas, then of those, people vote on the best, you can remove the low voted dots and save then for later if you want, and only focus on the top voted ideas! You don’t need to understand ever idea, just approach the ones the group have consensus on!

I also had to increase a lot of timing to LDJs. On their mural template it says 45 minutes. Probably that is the time needed with their especialized team. When I do with clients I need from 1 hour to 1.5 hour, as I need to let them get used to the tool and work method. 1.5 hour it's a long time if compared to the 45 minutes standard, but clients are still happy with the results, so that's ok for me.

You should share what you think your worst ideas are first, and make sure they are crazy and ridiculous, as an opener. It relaxes the team, they get a good laugh, and people can see that everyone can have some bad or crazy ideas. It might be more efficient in new teams as just an ice breaker...

There will be many similar ideas on the board, doesn't it make sense to group the 60 "sticky notes" into themes? Like someone may write "BOOKS" and another "LIBRARY". Collectively they may have winning votes, but separately maybe not.

I was wondering this too. Maybe in the posting step, folks could call out duplications (match game!) and double up their sticky notes some way. Don’t want to get into a long categorization stage, but some simple clumping might be useful.

I agree. As a facilitator you can either cluster them yourself or get the group to cluster (which is also a great way for them to get more about the ideas into their heads than they would by just silently reading to themselves).

This is a regular occurrence with groups that are hesitant to just throw ideas out there. Students, faculty member, administrators, ... anyone new to this way of working. Picking some number that’s still a stretch, but not overwhelming to the middle of the pack seems like a great way to modify this technique and make it more accessible to a less adventurous crowd. AND it would move their tolerance up a notch, especially if they saved a ton of time _and_ got good ideas to consider _and_ developed some consensus.

No. Voters should be allowed to vot any idea including theirs. But every one should evaluate on ideas before voting

Agree. I see zero disadvantages on not allowing to vote on own ideas, but a potentially severe problem if that would be allowed. Some personalities might be less open minded thus more likely to vote on own ideas. The ideas of the less open minded are equally important, but it's a mistake to allow their personality to expectedly create that voting problem.

Hey, that’s so cool! I actually used a brainstorming session that I „created“ in a project, based on the Sprint. I did exactly what you are presenting in this video, only, as a facilitator, I assigned 3 dots to each participant and picked only the first 3 that had the most votes. It was so easy and fast to make decisions! We decided like this on name, logo design, navigation, layout (it was a project in the Umschulung, we had to make a concept for a shopping center from zero)! This video is validating my method, great thing! 🤗

@AJ&Smart I love this process and I have stared to use this via a Miro board. Two questions to help improve my process. When voting how many votes per participant is the right amount? is there a ratio you use. Too few may not yeild enough results, too many may get too many and take a lot longer. Question two. Instead of dots, in Miro is it better to use the vote feature? I got feedback from a participant that voting annonymously would prevent the influence of seeing something getting a lot of votes. What do you think about that?

There is one thing, I would like to ask: you are always assuming, that participants understand what others have written on the sticky notes, which is not always the case, as I saw, when conducting workshops. How do you proceed, when that happens? (Going through all the sticky notes together at least doubles the time of the exercise)

Hey David! Ideally all the notes remain anonymous, that's why it's important to stress that people try to communicate their ideas clearly - and maybe give them a few examples (dos and don'ts). However, of course it's fine to ask people to explain if something seems interesting but unclear. It's also fine to skip them if the facilitator thinks other stickies communicate the same, or a similar idea in a better way. Sometimes it's up to the facilitator to make a call how important it is to put the spotlight on an idea As a facilitator, you should also take a look around what everyone is working on, and if some participants struggle to communicate their ideas in a way that's understandable to others without presenting them, remind everyone of dos and don'ts, best practices etc. (without specifically calling any participant out)

Good point Toluwase, this is just a workshop to kick off and generate ideas though. As it only takes ten minutes, you can do multiple runs of the workshop to ideate for different themes / topics! Still probably saving time on an unstructured meeting!

Nice ideas! Anything magical about 10 ideas? For a group of 5 or 6 or more, that could be a lot to go through. Why not go with top 5 or even 3 to start with so people have to filter a tiny bit before the group engages?

What if people don't generate 10+ ideas... When I facilitate sprints many folks struggle to come up with 8 ideas during crazy 8. I can anticipate this would be the case here. You are fine with us refining based on the audience, reducing it to 5? Also I agree with others on calling out the duplicates before voting to avoid confusion while voting

So I am a visionary if nothing else! 😁 I have been into astrology for over 25 years though most parts all too casually. Not entirely proficient in many things specifically. But I'm fascinated by the concept of brainstorming and I've got the heart of a creator. And I think I would be a polymath if I tried a lot harder! As it stands I've just got a lot of eccentric hobbies! 😂😂 But astrology is very salient to me therefore my belief in it is absolute and that gives me super power in and of itself but that's another story! I think astrology is a noble pursuit and I believe it can help people in profound ways! I mean to find new ways to help people with life with it! And I'm convinced I'm on to something big! Astrology is just stupid-crazy popular and it's star is only on the rise, pun intended! 🙄 Life is full of fate and astrology is the ultimate causality. All other cause and effect fall in line behind the when? and where? of what's going on in the heavens! it's just something that I've seen evidenced too many times and for too long to have need to debate it with myself any longer. I make no pretense about my command of all the knowledge of it, or lack thereof! But I pal around with a lot of astrologers online! And I mean to form a guild of them to brainstorm creative and dynamic and new ways to use it! Lots of people just love it to death and I'm convinced that I can help myself and others find gainful employment all while helping people along the way! I'm very impulsive however--the fact that you mentioned that you respond to all your messages capture my imagination so fast that I post the video before even watching it too test that out! 😂😂😂 I will continue on to the video now! And happy New year's! I'm very much hoping this one will be a productive one!

Any tips or tricks for encouraging participants to get a bunch of ideas on paper and not think about their ideas too much? I've run LDJs and other workshops that rely on idea generation and end up having to modify things a bit. Change number of dot votes per person for example. I feel like I can stress getting lots of ideas down but it rarely happens.

A simple 'Note and Vote', much like this exercise, works really well. 'Together / Alone' for 5 minutes, right down as many ideas as possible, then pitch back to the participants. Participants then vote on the themes or titles and you can then rank them based on votes and priorities!

As a project manager, I often find myself struggling with getting through a list of stories planned for these sessions because the team tends to get carried away by design and technical detail discussions. I want to try to implement this method and eliminate these painful discussions, but I'm not sure what should the team be voting for in this case. Should I ask everyone to think of 10 ways to implement a certain story/ address a requirement, and then vote? Also, no talking means no Q&A. What if people have questions about their teammates’ ideas and don't feel confident to cast their vote before those questions are answered? Sorry about the length of this comment. HMW do this exercise with only one team member? Is it possible? I know brainstorming should be a collaborative activity, but in my case I'm working solo. Any advice?

That's more tricky given the voting element. What about some kind of social media poll on Facebook or Instagram to gain insights on your ideas from follows / friends / family etc ?

Hey! I love the exercise and the way you explain it. Thanks for sharing. I have a question about facilitators. I'm the only designer in the company I work so I usually be in charge of doing this workshops and methodologies. Is better to put me as the facilitator or should I chose another one in the team?

I realize your comment is 2 years old now but I'm also the only designer on my team and thought I'd share my perspective. You can both facilitate and participate - there just needs to be someone in charge of moving through exercises and keeping to time. Once you've done it a few times and your team gets the hang of it, you can ask others if they want to try facilitating as well. Just depends on what works for you and your team!
