Slade - Universe (Music Video) (1991)

Slade's music video for their last single Universe, released in December 1991. The single failed to crack the top 75 of the UK Singles Chart, stalling at number 76, and the band split in early 1992.
This video is sourced directly from a Polydor Records VHS copy, and the quality is much better than my other upload of this video. Many thanks to Neil Partridge for supplying the cassette to me for transferring it across onto the computer.
This video, like the previous 1991 single Radio Wall of Sound, was directed by William Clark, who kindly recollected his thoughts for the Slade Cove website in 2014: "Universe was a much tamer affair, shot in a studio in Shepherd's Bush. What was interesting about that shoot was the graphics were all painted on a piece of glass about 6" x 4" by the scenic artist who did a lot of the work on Time Bandits the same way. So the shot of Dave playing guitar was achieved by him standing on a flight case at one end of an empty studio to get the scale, whilst the camera shot through this delicately painted small piece of glass at the other end. It's difficult to see now because there doesn't seem to be a decent print around, but in the days before CGI it really was imaginative and beautiful."

The chart failure of this underated classic signalled the end for Slade. Someone should feature this song in a film or advert. It seems the only way to get old songs noticed these days.

Loved and still love Slade and can’t believe at the time this wasn’t a bigger hit but I remember tastes were changing and becoming early 90,s dance. This was on greatest hits out then and I played it too death. Thanks Slade..

A great farewell of a fine rock band . Slade was one of my favorites in the seventies and eighties. A little underated rock band,. They were no Beatles, Stones, Queen or Led Zeppelin, but they were still a great rock band with fine rock songs.Thanks for posting this video.
