3:48 The first AK round was destroyed by the drop (in a glancing blow). The drop broke from the tail, not the point of impact, so I’m calling that a win for the drop.
@markgearing
@markgearing 4 жыл бұрын
The monster under your bed - Yeah... no. Pause the video at 3:50 and 3:51. All that shrapnel is (jacketed) round, not glass. Whatever your definition of ‘destroyed’ is, the round is destroyed. The second point is a bit more technical. You’re right, the drop doesn’t survive the encounter, but you can see in the slo-mo that the disintegration travels from the tail of the drop to the head. A Prince Rupert’s drop is easy to destroy by clipping the tail, an infant could do it with two fingers, it’s the head of the drop that’s resistant to damage. The head of the drop is intact well after the round is metal confetti. Drop wins. RIP drop.

A really interesting thing I saw was that on the third drop(the second time he used the ak) the head of the drop breaks, but once it gets close to the tail, the tail breaks too and they both meet near the end of the now shattered drop. I thought that was interesting.

In the 1600s, most people in the scientific fields (Mostly priests and other intellectuals) knew the world wasn't flat. How? They went up in a castle tower and looked at the horizon. Where there's a curve Christopher Columbus was such a massive dumbass that he thought the world was flat (One of the reasons why it was difficult for him to get funding for his exhibition)

Hi Destin. As a sound engineer, I'd like to point out to the audience something they may not realise - the slow motion sounds are artificial (for the most part, with real sounds mixed in and reverberation added). But I'm wondering how the sound design was actually done in this case? It's really effective! Much more realistic-sounding than Hollywood sound effects, which are based upon what they think the audience is used to hearing. Perhaps it might be an interesting video to do! Cheers, Jim.
@ashellinthepit
@ashellinthepit 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I'm the sound designer/composer for SED. All the SFX are edited to picture from scratch using a mix of original recordings & library sounds & a *ton* of reverb & delay. I do edit at least partially to expectation & simply use my intuition/taste to decide what sounds to use to represent the slow-motion footage. PRDs wound up being a lot of glass shattering (obviously) sand, gravel, and wind among a few other things. For the lifesavers we used electric zaps and recordings of tumbling rocks. I also find it important to have a static bed drone behind all slow-motion shots to give a feeling of time suspension.

You can see the shock wave actually went even faster - fast enough to reflect off back of the drop and back. 3:47 I think what happened here is actually that the inertia of the drop broke it much nearer to the tail, off camera, from bullet transferring the energy to the drop, rather than the fracturing happening at the point of impact. You can see that the fracture propagation starts off camera in the tail and goes up TO the bulb and at the final point of impact.
@FetalNevada
@FetalNevada 4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. I've been trying to think of a way to isolate the variables so we can see if a bullet could actually penetrate the drop portion, but I feel like anything you do to isolate the tail effectively negates it being a Prince Rupert's Drop in the first place.

I am not sure if it is actually a shrapnel. I imagine that the shockwave traveled to the end where the drop is the weakest so it broke there and caused the rest to break. You can see the Drop starting to break from tail (while already breaking) at 5:07. In that example there is clearly no shrapnel hitting the tail. It just starts breaking there because of the shockwave.

Okay wait! When smashing hard candy causes sparks... does that mean, you can get gasoline (or any other highly combustible material) on fire by just hitting candy? Can you make a video, trying that out?
@Raisonbran648
@Raisonbran648 7 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. That has me wondering about sparks in general. Like can a spark be invisible but ignite things, or is it's energy equal to it's brightness? Are the candy sparks hot or is it like static electricity? I wonder if anyone has tried to measure the energy released by the candy sparks.
@RealCadde
@RealCadde 7 жыл бұрын
I doubt it's going to ignite gasoline. Believe it or not, the spark is simply not strong enough to light the fuel in the best of conditions. Not even most static electricity will light gasoline. Heck, not even a tesla coil would light gasoline right away. You would have to get a really good channel of electric discharge to light it. In a combustion engine, if there's a lack of compression, even the spark plug won't ignite the air/fuel mixture.

Eddy D'silva point has a lot more to do with it as the pressure is significantly higher, scratching the surface of the drop is the best way to break it apart from the tail
@paultappan9055
@paultappan9055 7 жыл бұрын
In my opinion it is both pressure per unit of area and also the force of the impact which would induce reverberation. The point of the bullet needs to be as sharp as possible and as hard as possible in order to damage the prince ruperts drop in order to cause the cascading shatter. Also, the higher the velocity and mass of the moving object, the greater the force of impact and level of reverb on the prince ruperts drop which if great enough the reverb should cause it to shatter. I may be very wrong here but I would also like to know.

Theres an old adage in the military, 'speed defeats armor' Its why a 7.62x25 can defeat soft armor that the 45acp cant, despite having similar muzzle energy.
@commie4164
@commie4164 7 жыл бұрын
bit late to the party but speed is the greatest factor. a good example of this within this very video is that the 5.56 from the mini14 utterly shattered the drop, with the fracture forming in the nose and progressing towards the tail. it did this with a glancing blow, not the point of the bullet. the 7.62 round from the ak in both instances broke upon the drop, one of which drilled it almost dead center with the pointed tip of the bullet. the drop then fractured from the tail to the nose, this means that the shockwave of the impact broke the tail which caused the drop to crumble. if the drop were to be held in some kind of solution to prevent the tail from whipping sharply enough to break, the 7.62 round would fail to defeat the drop. the 7.62 has somewhere around 50% more muzzle energy than 5.56 owing to the greater mass of the bullet. however the 5.56 round is traveling at a few hundred feet per second faster. so in the end, a bullet with less kinetic energy, striking a glancing blow on the rounded edge of the bullet completely defeated the drop. and the only advantage it had over the 7.62 conditions was speed.
@sergeantbigmac
@sergeantbigmac 7 жыл бұрын
+Commie416 Yep youre right... While there are many many variables, having studied ballistics for a longtime, reloading, hunting, target shooting, etc. If theres one thing in my many years of experience that I notice ballistics almost always comes back to... its M*V^2. Not saying the other variables dont come into play. Often when something goes differently than expected those are the cause, but the majority of the time you can accurately predict how a round will perform just off its mass and speed. Another thing I was hoping he'd try is type of bullet in the same caliber. Maybe a subsonic, SP and a round nose to compare against the XM193.

Destin, what would happen if you had a little gasoline or other volatile solution in a very swallow pan and then smashed the lifesaver, do you think it would ignite the fumes?

Matt I wonder if anyone's been killed by eating a lifesaver when there was a gas leak.

At 5:05 to 5:09 you can see that the end of the drop, where it is shot, shatters nearly at the same time as the tail. Just interesting to watch.

Yeah I noticed it too, not by being hit my fragments either, somehow a shockwave makes it to the tail even though the drop shatters when hit.

@5:15 really cool how the nose of the drop shatters, but the vibration makes the tail shatter too, and both "shatter waves" meet in the middle

Actauly, assuming you're talking about MAKING one by cooling it with liquid nitrogen insted of water... It'd be weaker. Since liquid nitrogen evaporates easily, it will creat a gas layer around the molten glass, preventing more liquid nitrogen from coming into contact untill it moves away, and therefore slowing the cooling procces.
