So I realized I called the "pair" button on the top of the controller the "share" button like severalllll times in the video. In the heat of the moment of an intense tear down I guess "share" sounded better to me than" "pair" lol. Hope you enjoyed the break down of these controllers.

Is there a share button though? I've looked everywhere through Google asking "Is there a share button on the series 2 core" I get nothing no one tells me and no one on Google seemed to ask I've hit a couple clips the other day and couldn't capture any clips cause the share button isnt in the middle anymore.

Love and appreciate your videos, taking the time making them, having correct information and the sarcasm along with it lol. *However can you please STOP saying the Elite 2 Core has “cheaper plastic material”… it doesn’t. It has the same exact made plastic material as the Black version does. Literally every part and grade material make is identical to both. As myself and you have done a tear down on the Elite 2’s lol. I get where your coming from because it’s different and “Feels cheap” but that’s because They gave it a Matte finish/feel in White, with a slightly rough surface feel on purpose to be unique compared to the Black Elite version. Same Shell and strength, Just a different finish. They did that on purpose, one of the reason is because it’s harder for fingerprints and smudges. - Xbox community complained about the first and second Gen Black Elite being so easy to see any marks and oil from or hands. Both Elite 2 controllers are identical besides the finish. However if it was a “cheaper plastic” Microsoft’s sales revenue would actually cost More if they had a “different/cheaper” Plastic. Because alll Xbox controllers are made with same plastic material, just different finishes, therefore having another grade plastic would cost more and make no difference since all the internal parts are exactly the same on the Elites, thankfully Microsoft didn’t try scalping us with any cheaper parts on the Elite Core lol

Fantastic breakdown, while at the same time extremely disappointed that the internals are identical. Such a huge shame. You'd have thought MS would actually improve the parts, but no. This was extremely helpful, I'll prob test my luck with the black elite 2 bundle with warranty since I really want wireless. Thank you for your efforts and taking the time to make this video, no other controller reviewer comes anywhere near you, absolute legend!

My number one complaint with the Elite 2 is the bumpers, they’re the only components that have broken for me. I don’t want to take it apart and fix it because then I would void my warranty which I have a 2 year extended warranty which i’m glad i bought because of course the controller broke. If they fixed those then I would be happy with this controller. If it weren’t for these quality issues this would be the best controller on the market

I would think that there has to be SOMETHING that's different from the OG 2 or else MS couldn't say that it has "refined components that are built to last." Maybe they look the same but are made of a (slightly) different material??? Also, maybe the "cheap" white plastic is the same that the Series S is made out of?

I ended up buying the Elite Core because I really wanted that white shell and it’s been a couple of days and I’m really happy with it, it’s been flawless fingers crossed it will stay that way, i have some experience disassembling controllers so it wouldn’t be a huge deal to open it up. I read that the bumper issue is easily fixed by using contact cleaner on the bumper button itself

Part of me is surprised they're still using the 1797 boards instead of a modified 1914 or newer board, but part of me also isn't surprised considering this is just an Elite Series 2 with new shell plastics. Speaking of the plastics, I wonder if they're actually different, or if just the surface treatment is different. Guess we won't see much until a Series 3 exists. Though the pots are different, they're not the typical teal-colored ALPS that the original ES2 run had used, and what most first party products use. As far as I know, the DS5 and 1914 controllers, the two newest models of first-party controllers, use the teals still. Although, interestingly, the Steam Deck is using blacks like the ES2-C is using, though I'm not entirely sure if Valve is sourcing from ALPS or a third party; similarly, these pots could just as easily not be ALPS as well. This change has seemingly happened within the past year or so, because I've seen original ES2s with teal pots, yet your ~9 month old ES2 has the same black pots; maybe this whole 'quality control' thing Microsoft is boasting has been in the works for awhile, they may also be testing pots for quality before assembly for all we know, but I have a feeling the black pots contribute to this. I'm also not sure about third parties, because not all (if any?) are sourcing components from ALPS, I know K-Silver is one of the other big suppliers, though there's probably a handful of cheaper suppliers supplying the bottom of the barrel third parties. Given how ALPS has had a massive drop in quality over the past generation, I'd be curious to see if the black pots are ALPS, ALPS of higher quality, or ALPS at all. An alternative to a heat gun is also a hot bag. Ifixit sells them, other vendors sell something similar, or you can just microwave a bag of water and rice; I would recommend this over a heat gun in the vast majority of cases, never use a heat gun unless the tool is actually needed for the job. The rubber grips may also need a thinner than typical tool, alternative type of pry tool, or there may be an alternative trick to getting the shell to separate nicely, such as using a suction cup or 'massaging' the clips out of place without a pry tool by flexing the shell correctly, if the shell has enough give; there has to be a way to not mar the rubber.

As I say to friends interested in this controller: “This is the best pro controller ever!….when it works…” It’s so good, comfortable, and great battery life! Unfortunately the right bumper failed on me during warranty so I had to change it….and got a refurbished one. Here’s the cynical me thinking the refurbished one will fail within a year so in my pov this is not a got deal given how expensive it is and how other controllers usually last.

@@OnlyDanGames I got lucky. Called MS customer support, exposed my case in a candid manner, they looked at my file (MS customer for years, history of elite series 2 issues) and they accepted to replace my controller one more time, despite been out of warranty. Let's be honest, by now they probably know how shitty the quality is, and probably have tons of used controllers been refurbished. If they don't wanna have a PR mess, the least they can do is sending you a refurbished one at no cost. Cause it seems they are not spending money fixing the quality "core" issues.

Sent my Series 2 Elite in to MS, twice within the warranty for a non responsive/mushy A button. Both times it was sent back with nothing done. They claimed it was fine. Both times I submitted a ticket I included a video showing me pressing the A button 20 times, less than 10 of them registering. I took it apart and fixed it myself but it didn't last long. I tried just using a paddle button to replace A but years of muscle memory didn't go away. Needless to say I won't be buying any premium MS controllers ever again. My core has insane drift and the sticks feel stiff (i have used the tension loosening thing) when i go to control recoil Im pulling the stick in the correct pattern to control recoil but in game its like im not moving the stick at all & the drift was bad too (this is my experience with the core). The elite 2 core, is probably frankensteined from rmad elite 2's. The elite 2 has been literally the worst controller iv ever owned. And iv been gaming since the atari. I will never buy another first party microsoft controller again. They are designed to fail. We need a pro controller company to make a good controller, that has 4 ergonomic paddles. With mechanical switches everywhere, and hall effect sensors. The first one to do that, is gonna sell alot of them. Razer is probably the closest to it, but their paddle design is ass. Perfect controller. Elite 2 battery life and rubberization. Hall effect sensor analogs and triggers with trigger stops. Razer mechanical switches on every button. Good ergonomic paddles where the paddles are nice and separate, yet sit where your fingers naturally fall. Easy win, would sell like hotcakes.

So MICROSOFT did not upgrade those CRAPY stuff inside as they said they did....... gosh they are SCAMMERS for short. They lied...... shocks. Maybe they did on the late month releases of those controllers? I almost bought one yesterday.... happy I seen this video..... GOOOSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Thanks for the review. After 5 Microsoft defective controllers (2xElite 1 and 3x Elit 2) I'm officially done. The joystick drift, the bumper not responding, the grip... I will never buy another controller from Microsoft again, enough money wasted

Not sure I'd call it quality control-unless you include not just parts cost, but a very design that's bound (if not outright expected) to lead to rapid material fatigue, followed by device failure. Specifically, when you take apart a regular xbox controller, you find the bumper buttons individually hinged and sprung. By comparison, when you open an Elite S1, what you find is that the two (L/R) bumper buttons are connected by a thin piece of plastic running across the center, that effectively acts as a leaf spring: pushing either button causes the plastic to bend-then snap back, once you let go. This design is shockingly poor-for any price, let alone twice as much as the regular (and far more robust) controller.

You don't need a blow dryer or worry about adhesive. 🤦‍♂️ Simply get a flathead screwdriver then hold down one of the bumpers while you pry the faceplate off from the gap above the bumper. Its easy and you won't break or damage anything. Just make sure you hold the bumper down firmly or you'll snap the bumper off.

Hey, love the vids!!! I am doing a resto/mod/upgrade on an old Razer Sabertooth controller. I am thinking about putting the same joysticks as the series 2 controller in it BUT I need to know how wide the magnetic base is to make sure I have clearance. Can you tell me if the series 2 base is the same size or larger than the the standard 360 controller? Is the series 1 the same or smaller than the series 2? Thanks keep the vids coming.

Edit: I just went through virtual chat and typed in my serial # on my controller. It says it's still under warranty o.o. Do you think I'll be able to get away with sending it in after I already opened it. The warranty expired over a year ago haha. I thought I did bad opening mine, but I only have a little dot of plastic missing on left side and a little bit of the rubber on same side. I only want to know if the bumper has been improved. I got lucky and had 2 years of warrant(which I used several times), but it has long since ended and have had to open it several times since :/. On the positive side I got several extra thumsticks/pedals sent to me each time I sent my controller in.

Um.... I've repaired xbox controllers multiple times and never got any marks on the grips. Pull the triggers in so you can get a grip on the top of the rear grip and just tear it off. No pry marks, and I've never had one break on me.

Only problem I've ever had with either elite 1.0 or 2.0 controller is the stupid rubber grip ends up falling off. Wish I could get one without that crappy grip

They changed the warranty for the elite series 2 a while back. I bought one back in March 2020 and almost a year later in Feb 21, my bumper was only working every 1 out of 5 clicks. I went to the Xbox website, and they have these notifications sometimes when you go and check. One of them said due to frequent whatever the warranty was extended to a year. thankfully I was able to get a replacement almost right at the cutoff point. This was great then, but now the rubbers are coming off. This one a problem I had with the series 1 I never expected to have with the series 2. it's like the rubber deformed over time. I wish they would either make the grips a rubber sleeve with nubs that socket in, or just have texture on the plastic and spray the sections over with the rubber coating they have on the face plate. Also, they need to put a little adhesive on the rubber tips that go over the trigger stop switches. Those things fall of and disappear. If you do get a new elite2 remove them and put a tiny touch of glue. One other tip, if you're playing a game that is heavy on bumper usage, map them to the paddles. The arm that depresses the actuator for the bumpers is a built-in point of failure on all one/series controllers, its long and brittle. They used to be worse on the first version of the xb1 controller where the bumpers were a single mould across the front of the controller, that could snap at the flex point.

Edit: I just got my elite series 2 controller back and they sent me one that looks brand new. Even though I had already opened it since I thought the warranty ended (should have I bought it over 2 years ago). I'll probably hold off on making a design lab one for now and see if they add any colors/hear back from others on quality.

I’ve take several elites apart without damaging the rubberized grip. Nor did I have to use a heat gun. Use several picks like the ones that come on ifixit kits and just pry from a corner and keep prying and leaving picks in. easy peasy

stripped down 100s and never damaged rubber grips. insert plastic prying tool between shell and RB or LB has close to the rubber grip has pos without touching the rubber and twist the tool may take a few twist or a cpl of swaps to the oposite side and eventually you will feel the side you are working in will lift up, work a second tool in to the gap and work your way around the controller carefully popping each clip has you go job done. ps nice vid and love caydes ace of spades
