I didn't mind it in Andrew Schulz's special as they were very obviously separate from the content of the main special. If a comedian puts up a special for free on youtube, I'm not gonna complain that I have to fast forward through a couple ads. In terms of "integrity", it's not really different from a comedian doing a comedy central special that has commercial breaks. That said, the way Akaash Singh tried to integrate the ads into the special felt pretty cringey and like it detracted from the quality of the overall piece.
@glacuonie5 күн бұрын
@@harryfranklin1263 yeah true, I guess I just worry about it one day becoming the default and every time you watch/go to a stand up show you have to sit through like 3 ads, and that just being accepted

One take on this is simply: "Hurt people hurt people." I don't know the guy, have never seen any of his work, but it sounds to me like all the self-involved routines (e.g., not understanding where his non-binary friend is coming from) and the homophobia and the posturing about his manhood comes from trying to deal with the toxic relationship he's in. He can't find a way to be funny about it because he's so angry about being with a partner who places rigid expectations and demands on him while being emotionally volatile. He wants to win the argument, but she keeps moving the net, so he makes his case to the audience instead. He can always pretend he's playing a character or that it's hyperbole for laughs, but what it comes down to is that the stage is the only place he is allowed to rail against everything, and so he attacks everything. Honestly, I have no idea how Bill Burr manages to stay on the offensive and still get laughs, but we know he isn't in a toxic relationship. It would be a lot harder to be funny if you knew you were going home to a situation you couldn't predict. I really feel for this guy.

Presenting something as a joke doesn’t make it a joke. I often see these sort of comediens not telling actual jokes, just stuff that has the cadence of a joke but without the joke content, just some statement and then a “punchline” that’s just another statement with an animated voice or expression. It’s like the morning radio style of humor where the hosts say a bunch of nonsense and then laugh a lot out loud as though it’s the funniest thing ever said. Basically, the old “if it “sounds” funny it must be funny.” It’s the hack comedy mantra I think.

I agree the special was bland, and Akaash is going for a cringey "comedy album cover with caution tape over his mouth" persona. But it feels like there's an odd amount of earnest psychoanalysis going on in this essay. "When Rickles mocked Carson for his thinning hairline, it underlined a deep-seated self-loathing based on his own baldness. This perpetuates unhealthy beauty standards while ironically also falling victim to them. Rickles is clearly miserable because he falls short of what he regards as the ideal male form; were he aware of this he could make a joke turning this dynamic on its head, but instead he reinforces these outdated norms."

Hey massive fan of your work, but it’s a bit disappointing to see you be so negative about another comedian. That’s not to say you don’t have valid points or criticisms in the video but I feel like there’s already so much “Joe Rogan sucks”, “The Worst Comedians of All Time” sort of content on social media, and I’d hate to see you succumb to that trend. There’s just not that much positive content surrounding comedy these days and your channel is a great antidote to that!
@evildoesnotsleep-x2b15 күн бұрын
If the comedy is shit you, why would you want him to praise it???
@nathan.chin.15 күн бұрын
@ I’m not saying he has to praise it. In fact, I’m probably more inclined to agree with his overall opinion. I’m more questioning this video existentially: people have such varied senses of humour plus comedy is already so hard, so I just think it’s “hack” to talk about why someone’s comedy sucks.
