I think the most important thing he does is lean on the mic stand. Anyone who knows Bill knows it wouldn't be wise to heckle him, but still there might be some who would dare to try...or some who may not feel the need to pay attention. When he leans on the mic stand, it's both casual and commanding. He shows he is at home on stage and relaxed....and in charge. He is not coming to visit us.... he allowed us to come visit him.

While I agree that Burr uses the mic in a really interesting way, I think there's a different dimension you neglected -- verisimilitude. By moving the mic away from his mouth like he did in when he said 'go play with your brother,' what he does is imply walking away without actually having to do it. It's the same thing with the culling speech and the line 'let me finish.' Were something like that to actually happen, the politician would be arguing with people trying to remove him from the stage, so naturally he would not speak clearly into the mic. The result is that Burr makes the audience feel as though there is more going on than one man standing on stage simply addressing them. He effortlessly conjures an image of an annoyed father walking away from his children, or an embattled, radical politician trying to stay on stage despite the protests of others around him in a way that wouldn't really work if he just spoke into the microphone.

Saying that some of bill burr's jokes wouldnt work if he didnt have a microphone is kind of funny, many comedians ha e made that point, theres a reason they gave me the microphone and sit you in the audience, the differnce between a lunatic grandpa ranting about immigrants and health care and some politicians is the microphone, and the audience and platform. But bill bur is a showman, he's got a sense of humor that hits home to alot of us.

I honestly thought I was the only person who thought about this factor with Bill Burr. I’m always entertained by his work with the mic. His helicopter story is an obvious example. But even his story about how he would raise his kid using the game of catch as a distraction was a very simple way of using / not using the mic to free up his hands to emphasize his playing of catch with his kid. Bill’s the man.
