Hello. I have no base of electronics. I need to repair a Onkyo tuner from 1991. Stereo does not work. I bought a Fluke meter. From 5 youtube videos, it could be that I could try to turn up or down with a screwdriver a potentiometer. One after the other taking care to memorize the initial position. My big fear is the 220V curreent as it has to be lit on, while trying to setup. What part is the most dangerous that I have to avoid touching? Am I allowed to touch the chassis? Thanks. It is just my life I’m afraid to lose.
@12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
Your mains will be on the primary side of the trabsformer. They are usually shielded pretty good with warnings. The secondary side of the yransformer is lower voltage. I always recommend using an isolation yransformer. If that is not possible make your measurements with one hand. Clip your negative probe to ground with an alligator clip and make your measurements with the other probe using 1 hand only. Keep your other hand on your pocket and wear insulated shoes. That way if you accidentally touch an energized part you will not be electrocuted as there is no path across your heart to ground. One hand behind your back or in your pocket is a great safety measure that everyone working around electricity should do. Just like a bird can sit on 60,000 volt wires and not be harmed as there is no path to ground. This is how an isolation transformer protects. Removes that path to direct ground
@thevintagehifiambassador85243 жыл бұрын
hello. just watched your technics video with display light problem when your esr did not help but your meter found out that the capacitor died inside. There you put isolating tape on the current metal soldering, which is, I suppose an additional security for me, and enough security for semi or total professionals like you. Thanks a lot. I currently have 3 other tuners with problems. A Kenwood KT-1100 sd which only lit after 2 hours and now after 10 hours does not show any sign of life....so I’ll try with a hairdryer. A Kenwood KT-1100 which lights up but does not give any tone, from one month to the other. Then a JVC top of the line which I got from a gangster on ebay and never caught any signal nor frequency. So I’ll start with the small Onkyo. Thanks for keeping me alive. Greetings from Germany.

I just opened the T-404 from Onkyo, nothing in it, nearly empty :-). and after 10 minutes found the right potentiometer and now I have stereo signal and I fixed it. Wow. Amazing. So glad, I wanted to 1. give it to an Onkyo fan and 2. throw it away.

@zuriel13g3 жыл бұрын
@@petercamacho1462 You'll have to remove the faceplate, the part covering the bulbs will come off with it, just like at 13:05 (those green and white wires are for the bulbs, the black foam strips are there to block any stray light). After that the bulbs will be easily accessible located below the VU needle. It's kind of tight since it'll have to fit back underneath the faceplate so I ended up using 3mm flat top LEDs on mine with an appropriate resistor in series with each LED since from what I remember all of the bulbs were wired in parallel.

Nice job! Once again, these glass heads have another victim... I know some of these Akai reel to reel can be fitted with a special kit for 15ips. It includes a capstan adaptor with a screw and a thinner roller, and an eventual mod and additional switch on the reel motor. You could originally find these for early models that needed that same trick to change from 3,75 to 7,5, but here the electronics and tension levers are probably unfit to any proper simple modification. Special motors could be fitted, but their cost + glass heads are making this a non sense if you can switch to a good TEAC or REVOX machine. Some of the best Otari were designed for 15 and 30 IPS only, but designed specifically for this use, and known for beeing selective on tape quality. With old band material, 15 IPS is a no way on Glass heads!
@12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
Finally someone that understands how bad the glass heads were. As to 15ips just changing the capstan size gets you half way there. The eq is totally different. My akai 4000 you remove the sleeve for 3 3/4 but it also has a switch to change the eq and probably the bias. My teac 4 track, now that is a serious machine that saw lots of use in small studios.
@video99couk3 жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids Exactly what I was thinking, the equalisation wouldn't be right. My go-to machine is a Ferrograph Super-7, with the Record head replaced with an extra playback head so I can switch between 1/2 and 1/4 track playback. That one does 10.5" NAB spools at up to 15ips.
@12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
@@video99couk I had a client bring me a machine I think it was a Sony, and it had the capstan sleeve so 1 7/8 becomes 3 3/4, 3 3/4 7.5 and 7.5 becomes 15. I actually got in an argument with them over the EQ and they insisted it makes no difference. So I took a tape @ 7.5 and ran it at the 7.5 setting and then again at the 3.75 setting with the sleeve on, and did the same with a 3.75 tape at both the 3.75 and 1 /78 motor speed. A 7.5 tape played with the sleeve in the 3.75 setting sounded too bright. A 3.75 in the 1 7/8 motor speed sounded even brighter like someone cranked the treble control, so I imagine that a 15IPS tape played with the deck set for 7.5 would also have the same EQ mismatch. The best sounding reel to reel I own, by a country mile in my Teac 3340. It only has 7.5 and 15IPS but the sound off that recorder is bloody awesome, for analog anyway.

@@michaelfreiberg8057 never have managed to wear out the amorphoris head on my Technics rsm275 and it has also thousands of hours on it. If you had a permaloy head then yes it will wear but sendust and amorphous and many other hard alloys no, they don't wear and have superrior electromagnetic properties compared to ferrite and the glass head is just a ferrite head set in glass. They sound pretty dull by comparison and they crack. In temperature swings the ferrite expands and can cause the glass to crack and then the ferrite shifts slightly where is sounds like an azimuth error but you can never get it set because it shifts.
