I think a "using keygroups for MPC noobs" could be a good topic because for people attracted to the sequencing/synth side of Key 37 (or even 61) like me, this might be their biggest pain point or why they'd even want to do it. Related, I was asking about using Studio Strings and how you can only use all instruments and not freely combine the violin, viola, etc. While you can open multiple instances (although problematic on 2GB systems), somebody replied you could also sample those individual instruments as keygroups and I'm willing to try it. Wondering if it will actually be less resource intensive though ... @@LiftedNoise
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
@josephkissel6062 I may visit that some time. You can definitely make your own keygroups or auto sample the plugins to make keygroups and determine how many samples per octave will be sampled, in turn determining if it's a large or smaller keygroup. There's quite a few expansions out there as well with pre-made keygroups. Also another option would be to resample a loop of your plugin and free up space.

I got mine b/c it’s a once and done deal: flip one switch and I immediately have two devices ready to use. No usb connections, no nothing extra to do. Next, who else would I trust to join a time honored tool with a synth. Think about it, would you trust and or buy this same device if it were made by Moog, Korg, or Roland and expect to get the same proven set up in a cost effective and highly portable device as the long line of MPC’s Akai has known to make? In the end this machine is the logical step for Akai to create; it’s alot easier to build an MPC by adding a keyboard than the other way around b/c it’s so pragmatically ubiquitous to the type of Pop music being produced today. Let the keyboard virtuosos or hardcore synthesists have their expensive devices. This one is a game changer.

I had the MPC one, and I got rid of it because of what you have just said about the key 37 being right there in front of you, and besides that the key 37 in my opinion has a better interface, as far as the buttons go, and the selection of functions on those buttons, it is definitely worth $200 more than the MPC one. I previously commented that I would not be buying the key 37, but since then I had a closer look at the button layout and functions, I pulled the trigger and I bought the key 37 because it's way better than the MPC one, and it's much easier to move around the house then Mpc x and key 61

One thing about the Red as someone who owned the One+, you can forget skinning it. Skins dont cover the sideports, some dont cover the sides at all. So whatever skin you get needs to look good with red. And from my deep search on google there's very little available. The retroskins are out. Maybe only those weird anime ones which was a bit too tacky for me, so I kept it red. It did grow on me, but my new Live 2 blacked out fits my desk much nicer (and its wayyy better than the One IMO).

My understanding is this is the only MPC that has MIDI over USB which allows you to control your DAW on the computer without using a MIDI interface. Plus you do not require 4 or 8 megs of memory since the device has loads of features built in via hardware. Once you connect it to a PC/Mac with a DAW, the 2 gigs of memory also becomes mute. Lastly, I feel this keyboard is too large to be battery powered. Maybe a 25 key version of this being battery powered could work with the mod and pitch bend wheel moved down to the left of the keys like most keyboards.
@LiftedNoise7 ай бұрын
Yes. Yes and yes. My last video was about the usb midi. And you're right when you plug in the 2 gb don't matter. I don't use a computer and don't have issues anyway. I like the pitch bend where it's at. I think a mini keyboard mpc would be interesting.

heh, this actually made me NOT buy this, but great video, nice logical descriptions of what you liked and why, and quick demo of making some nice beats. So although I didn't buy this, it actually pushed me over the top on buying an MPC One. I was looking for a way to buy the brains of an "arranger keyboard" or "keyboard workstation" without the keyboard, in other words so I could use the same brains and sometimes take a tiny 25-key keyboard with me, and sometimes use it with a 37, 61, or 88 key keyboard. I really looked long time at Yamaha, Roland, Korg, but it just felt like, the fewer keys on the keyboard, the more crippled the interface was. You can't buy the high-end brains except with the larger 61 or 88 keys. They may have all had auto-accompaniment or sequencers or arrangers, but none of them seem to really focus on ||workflow|| like Akai does.

Damn, I didn't think I'd be saying this... but I MIGHT be swapping my SP404MK2 for one of these. Having synths onboard and a keyboard sort of trumps everything else for me haha. I'm a keys player and I don't write music using samples. If I sample and chop anything, it's stuff I write and play that I rework through sampling. Having a keyboard with even a fairly functional sequencer, effects AND the ability to export stems/Ableton sets... I mean that really does a lot for me. I mean Push 3 in pretty much every way is what I'd prefer... but KEYS and sequencer on ONE device are that much of a selling point to me haha. Thanks for your insights, man.

Half the price of a PUSH 3 and you get keys. As a key player you'd definitely find this more productive than an SP but if you can keep both 👌 I'm mostly using my 404 right now to make Drum breaks, drop em in the 37 play along on the keys.

Thanks for the overview. The stock sounds, the sampler, and the big screen for the sequencer are nice selling points. I paid almost $2000 for my Korg Wavestation alone back in 1990, no sequencer, no sampler, no drum pads. That’s probably $3.5k in today’s money. I can’t think of anything else that delivers the same combination for that price, plus it includes the usual free downloads, etc. As far as what people perceive as “build quality,” most people are talking about weight. It’s easy to make things heavy so people think they are “more solid,” (I see this in cameras, etc), but really, these companies know that they can ship these models for less money if 100 units weigh less. The swap from metal to plastic is both cost saving and weight saving, and isn’t related to quality. I have a heavy old Korg Wavestation and I wish the outer panels were plastic every time I have to carry it…
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
It's good to know about the weight vs. quality topic. I was kind of thinking that. As far as stock sounds, one thing i wanted to mention that I missed was about the plugins that come with this..I used presets from the fabric xl collection that is not stock, but the MPC KEY 37 come with a free plugin voucher upon registration. Thanksnfornthe comment.
@josephkissel60628 ай бұрын

Well, I believe there is a limit of 8 plugins in standalone as is. The main problem would be running the sample based plugins like fabric xl and studio strings. I dont have to worry so much about the synths. I don't use many plugins like that, so I'm not really one to speak on it. 4:35 well you do have the Push 3, Maschine+ which are standalone and you can make full songs on them AND have a computer inside. But those as well have limited ram. The thing is 2GB is more than enough. Ok you have plugins with multi samples that fill it up quickly. But they can always add a Freeze option so you don’t mess with resampling.
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
Those are definitely the closest competitors and I considered them. I haven't tried the push 3 how are either of those regarding audio tracks? I record vocals in my MPC do I was looking at it as whole complete song with lyrics.. I'm sure it's possible but I'm not so sure it's as convenient though..
@vinylselektaz64758 ай бұрын
Machine is buggy , push 3 is unfinished and well overpriced and workflow not that great for both.
@alecsbuga8 ай бұрын
@@vinylselektaz6475 I had them all. Except Push 3. I had the 1 & 2. Right now I’m rocking the M+. Trust me it’s not buggy. As a matter of fact I was surprised they added some nice things like when you connect a usb drive. Or you have missing samples. It was buggy at launch. As the MPC and all others.

This is awesome. Isn’t stand alone gear limiting? You can do so much more with a laptop and a daw. Why would someone choose this over fl or logic? I’m curious because this thing is sweet.
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
Exactly what you said is the reason why I do. Because it's limiting. It's still super powerful, but having a laptop with just about limitless options can be debilitating.. and also the distraction free creation process. I feel more connected and zoned in..

I understand that. It doesn't bother me. This is my favorite sequencer and sampler built into a keyboard. Plus, the form factor fits my situation. Nothing really compares to this for me right now. I'd pay $1000 from this probably. If it had a battery I'd definitely pay atleast an MPC LIVE 2 price.

It's NOT a problem. The most awkward thing I forgot to mention is the SHIFT button placement. Would have been better in the middle, but the only real issue for me is using it to make edits to my audio tracks.

So Smpltrek has already gone to the shelf for good? :)
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
Yes. Pretty much. It was, for a time a nice portable idea generator for when I was at work but the 404 is a lot faster for that purpose with no need to save samples before use. If all I had was the smpltrek I'd write and record songs with it! The looper tracks are great along with the mic for coming up with hook/chorus song concepts! And then the global tracks for verses. But having an MPC everything else just becomes a scratch pad for quick ideas that get finished in the MPC.

Really can't answer for You. Especially when you haven't included much of your lifestyle in the comment. If you're mostly at home creating you don't really need the added portability features. But also if your not a keyboard player or desire that much and mostly sample you're probably good with any other MPC like the ONE which is more comparable to this. So answer those questions and you get your best answer.

Have you used any of the new MPCs? It's not any more menu diving then the others. In fact it has more buttons then the LIVE 2 so it's more hands on. Also all the basics of putting a beat together are straightforward, accessible from the main screen but it can get deep when you are looking to do more detailed parameter adjusting. But that can be left to do after the creative process which is a great workflow!

Can someone tell me how akai sounds compare to a Yamaha MODX. I am 61 and getting bored with my yamaha
@LiftedNoise8 ай бұрын
Well, first off, this isn't the same kind of workflow as far as selecting sounds..although it is streamlined, you will notice a bit of lag from loading presets compared to the instant recall on the modx. I don't really have any experience with the modx except a few minutes in a music store but I have used motif sounds in my yamaha mx49. In mi opinion yamah sounds are at the top so pretty hard to beat. If you want the acoustic samples with the mpc key 37 you'll have to buy the fabric xl plugin. All the stock plugins are synth type plugins but your purchase does come with a free plugin voucher which you could use for the fabric xl. You could always auto sample some of your favorite modx presets in the mpc. The sequencer and sampler is where the mpc excels while the sounds are good I think the yamaha probably wins out that category.

The key 37 combo and button layout is much better than the MPC one and is definitely worth the $200 upgrade. People who are thinking about just adding a keyboard to the MPC one have to deal with constantly looking up and down between the keyboard and the MPC one when editing and creating their music. The key 37 buttons and functions of the buttons are more ergonomic and user-friendly than they are on the MPC one. And if you can't afford the key 37, that's OK because the MPC one is superior to any other hardware sequences sampler on the market, except for the key 61 and the MPC X. Akai has no competition when it comes to music production and sampling. The only people who think the MPC's are not the ultimate music production hardware are people who haven't really learned how to use the MPC's, once you know it it's easy to use.
