Thanks Akash, this is a great feature which I had no idea about! Note to anyone who had any trouble setting Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab as a shortcut, make sure you after you go to "Add" a shortcut, you select "Special key (Enter, Tab, etc...)" first or it won't work!

JUST got my hands dirty with this today! Also a good friend (DP user) said it looks like it checks out as an answer to DP's Chunks. Here's hoping I get to sink this beast's teeth into an interactive game score soon!

Subprojects is the biggest thing out of all the Reaper course 😍 Cuz my game audio projects get so big and ugly looking, so I needed to dig deeper into this subprojects theme. 😃

@@AkashThakkarAudio how much have you pushed the program with the amount of sub projects in a master project? I assume there is a point when 100+ tabs may be annoying. I haven't tried yet, but would a sub project in a subproject work?? Making folder trees of sorts. I'll have a try tonight.

So curious to play around with this in a big orchestral template! Obviously it will help with the cpu load, but I'm curious how it affects that workflow.

Hey Akash, Alejandro of Reapertips forwarded me to this video. Very useful. My workflow is that I do a lot of projects, then make a selection and compile an album. Usually I mix all of my projects and start a new (master) project and line up all the mixes. Buuuut... then I see that I need to tweak the mixes here and there so that the album becomes more coherent. I think subprojects would be a great help, here. But I can't figure out how to convert a series of existing projecte into a master project with subprojects. Can you help me there? thanks
@AkashThakkarAudio
@AkashThakkarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
All you need to do is make a new master project, and then drag your other project files on to your tracks in that master project (just like you'd drag a wav file in to a project). They'll then show up as subprojects within whatever project they were dragged into.

Old video, but I hope you're still checking out comments. I'm dreaming of a screen composing workflow and wondering if this is somehow possible in Reaper. I'm doing a fair amount of TV scoring in Reaper and I want to have all cues show up on the same timeline. The problem with subprojects is that it doesn't handle versioning. I think Reaper has a new update which allows one project tab to follow the video TC in another project tab? Is there some way to render directly to another tab? Whatever the possible solution, I need it to be super fast and efficient.

I wish I knew! I don't have any TV scoring experience, so I'm not the best guy to ask. I know that all of my TV writing friends use Cubase considering it has most of the features you mentioned needing!

Hey Akash, so with subprojects, you have to think ahead and keep tracks for each sound separate, right? I mean, if you have 3 layers for a jump sound, and 3 layers for a footstep, and you want these to be in separate sub projects, then you can't share any tracks between them (which otherwise you might, given that a particular footstep recording session could possibly use the same eq's and other processing). Is this right?
@AkashThakkarAudio
@AkashThakkarAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yup! That's how I work. If I need to share tracks, I'll either make FX chain presets, or I'll just copy/paste tracks between subprojects.

Hey Akash, thank you so much for these tutorials! It helped a lot. One question: when I make a subproject tab, do all the stuff, save and quit, when I reopen the master project, there is no subproject tab, only the master track subproject into my master project. Is there a way to reopen the master project WITH the tabs, or can I just open the subprojects as solo projects? Sorry If I sounded too confusing.
@AkashThakkarAudio
@AkashThakkarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Sort of, yes! When you open up Reaper, you'll see it gives you options to open your most recent projects. One of those options will include the ability to open your most recent project along with all of the subprojects you had open at the time of closing it down. You can indeed open subprojects as solo projects! They're literally just regular project files embedded as a track item within Reaper, so if you go into your directory, you'll find them all there.

If one track has another sound, "Move tracks to subproject" will group the selected region and that sound together. So I guess, When you make sounds to a game, for the main project, is that: one track, one sound, one subproject? Then every new sound must move to the right of the previous sound. Will the project very long in horizontal? Like a waterfall?
@sapbucry

that is super useful, thanks Akash. What I am struggling to do, after I do have my subproject A I want to clone it (duplicate) and make it unique so that I can make variation on subproject A. When I just copy / duplicate subproject A and make changes to copy it is still linked to first instance . Do you guys have any solutions to it ? Haven't been able to find anything. Thanks!!
@sapbucry
@sapbucry 3 жыл бұрын
I guess the only way to do that is to copy subproject outside of Reaper in the OS and then insert copy to the main project, but still hope there is a way to do this inside Reaper out of the box.

I see the option for "project tabs: defer rendering of subprojects (render on tab switch rather than save)" as an option, and when I run the command in the actions list, it shows as its state is "on", yet whenever I hotkey to tab over projects, it doesnt seem to do the consolidation/rendering process.. I even tried making a custom action that includes next tab and this action and it still wont do it? I can only have it save my changes by manually saving each time before switching back.
@AkashThakkarAudio
@AkashThakkarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, sometimes the actions list can behave a bit oddly for this specific thing. Try this: right click one of your project tabs, then go to subproject rendering, and set the options there and see if that works.

Hmmm I'm not getting the prompt to render my sub-projects, have played with "on" and "off" states of those settings but nothing seems to be working - it's not that they're rendering automatically, they're just not rendering at all!

Is it possible somehow to render the subproject at 64FP bit rather than 32FP?
@AkashThakkarAudio
@AkashThakkarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! If you go to Window -> Project Settings and set all relevant options to 64 bit FP, and then click "Save as Default Project Settings" then all of your projects/subprojects should render at 64 bit FP. The one setting that's most important to change here is under the "Media" tab. Look for "Default format for project/region render".
