AKG D550 - Dynamic Stage Microphone - Test / Review - Bass Instrument Mic On Voice?

This thing has had my eye for a while, as instrument mics are sometimes AMAZING for voice work.....is this one?

I wouldn't say it's obscure... they're just the old version of the 440 that they're currently selling with a better housing, but those are at an illegally low price. They are as good or better than 57s, and I love the form factor for micking drums or broadcast. I found the pack with the 4x 440's and 1 550 which I'm not sure what the difference is it's a little big bigger element inside I thikn? The whole pack for 450 CAD... that's a joke.Everyone who had them said they're really really good. They more than doubled the price on those now. Kind of a poor man ND46 (Electrovoice). Sound absolutely bonkers for the price. Almost no plosives either. Look good. Unless you knock is out with a hammer on purpose, I don't see why they would break. AKG plastic is darn good plastic. Lol

Agree. That some microphones that are tailored for instruments can actually sound great on vocals. ie the Sennheiser E614 sounds really good for vocals.

Kind of looks like a tiny baby SM7B. Doesn't sound bad, maybe a little scooped. I don't hear much in the mid-section and it sounds almost a bit nasal or something. Definitely an interesting mic, and I like the look of it for on-camera use. It's not too big/bulky..

Not a bad sound for a tom mic. Has that same MD421 style peak at 2.5k or so. Would be wary of using a plastic mic near any drum though, likely to get hit with sticks eventually. Wouldn't use it much on voice but could be ok for some of those mumblecore rappers, maybe make that style a little more intelligible.

I often wonder if someone with a deep voice could make a mic like this seem d better. A drum mic is so different than any other mic anyway.

I really like the idea of spoken word testing for mics not necessarily designed for spoken word. I'm using bad headphones today, but I think this mic sounds pretty good, and I do like the look of it.

I've always thought this about the D550, that is looks like a broadcast mic, and I bought a D112 specifically to use for vocals.

off axis is good. Sound is pretty darn good. a little processing and it would be a very useable voice mic.
