That's honestly what it is. Sometimes you get some nifty things but usually, it's mediocre to straight up scam. I got an advertisement page in a grab bag once, like- not even a poster, it was an ad for a plush of a character I didn't even know lol and that was one of the 5 "items"

As an artist who has tabled at conventions, I can say that is the case for a lot of lucky/mystery bags in artist alleys (I can imagine it's the same for the dealer's/exhibitor's hall from what I've seen). Sometimes it's also b grade items (which are often still really good because artists are often just very picky with quality) or items they're discontinuing from their selection. Granted, artists often mark the bags as such so you have a better idea of what you're getting as opposed to dealer's/exhibitor's that often don't clarify that. Of course this is all from my experience so it may vary for others

That is the main concept they’re like mystery boxes it’s a great way to get rid of unwanted things and earning a profit if you find someone who likes the things or thinks it’s valuable (usually idiots only buy mystery boxes, lucky bags are better at least they contain some sort of desired product)

ive found that when i do go to conventions and buy blind bags, the artist ones are always better than the ones from people selling official merch....they always have more thought put into them and even if i dont know the characters or the references being made on some of the pieces, you can tell that there is so much time and work put into each piece and each little thing that you are given

hyuna always leaves me wigless her name is Milinda Bratini. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the anime, but I was also stunned when Aki said she had never heard of it before. Milinda is a princess, if I recall correctly, and she is the one that handles the “Heavy Object” (hence the name) that this world uses to fight in wars. The other characters go into the battlefield and secretly destroy the enemy’s bases. It’s a really good anime for one that doesn’t get much attention. I highly recommend to anyone who likes mecha or war anime.

I like the grab bags from artist alleys, mostly because they always give more than what you pay for, got a 40-50$ sweater in one bag i paid 35$ for. The thing about grab bags in official anime merch booths is that people just use grab bags as a way to recycle stuff they couldn’t sell, so they are never as good. Artist alleys: even if it’s something that they couldn’t sell it will still be a piece of art they put their blood sweat and tears in and the series that they like. So id say those are always a better investment, especially if you love the artist and want to support them but just simply don’t know what to choose

I like themed mystery bags more than their generic counterparts; regardless of what items are in there, you know it's always going to relate to that particular theme. Like the pokemon bag you got, which was mostly pokemon themed, but had a few non-fandom items in there too

I have an oddly weird talent to pick up good grab bags when I'm at cons. They are generally worth it or just slightly under. My favourites are always from the artists. I also have the same luck when it comes to blind boxes for the D&D miniatures. The last one I picked out for the hubby, it had the snowy owl bear in it and he was so excited because he could put it up with the Christmas decorations.

I've seen my friends burn money on those stupid bags only to always be disappointed. I'm that picky to where most of the time, I will not buy a thing at the vendor hall unless I know I'm going to be happy with it. Nothing pisses me more than gambling away my hard earned cash I labored on to afford my hotel room and my convention tickets on stupid bags that will make me want to punch a wall. All those bags is 2 days worth of work at my job. I rather spend it on artist booths, a quality figure or an expensive date with my husband. They don’t eat magicarp according to the Pokédex it mentions it’s just mostly made of bones and scales after meowth takes a bite out of it...that Image you used was after the the ship sank and James’ magicarp was flopping around in front of them and they were all hungry and started to think about food...after meowth brakes his teeth trying to bite into the Pokémon James gets mad and kicks it off the raft they are on which then pisses magicarp off and it evolves into gyarados 🤓👍

At the major conventions, there is a company that makes $35 random boxes of different pop culture tv shows/movies/cartoons and I have never been disappointed with those boxes. From my guess, there is at least $50 worth of stuff in them. They also sell way bigger boxes for between $85 and $250 but I haven't bought those.

I bought a $10 mystery bag at an anime/video game/comic con in my city. It was filled with a bunch of small things like figurines and lanyards etc. The cool thing this booth did was let you open it at the table and go through it and whatever you didn't want, you could trade it for something that previous customers have discarded from their bags. So it was more worth your money because you had a higher chance of getting stuff you like. I lost most of my stuff due to moving but the one thing I still have and use from that bag is a Pokemon wallet. Which is probably worth $5 itself.

I got a mystery bag of an artist's clearance art/merch but it was mostly stickers and they were the best including sailor moon characters with eeveelutions and a girpool (invader zim x deadpool). Imo, for beautiful ass art, they're worth it when it's an artist booth :)
