I am in the same situation as you and I fully agree.. My boy is 7 months old now better than I could've ever imagined a dog to be but it wasn't easy getting here. To raise a dog like an Akita is like raising a small child. What someone needs in order to succeed as an Akita owner is not experience, it's time and dedication.

I came across this video when I first considered to get an akita. I am a first time dog owner as well and was really insecure about getting such a difficult breed. Watching this was a huge boost in confidence for me, because I was researching everything I could about the breed but always just read to stay away if I wasn't experienced with dogs. And now, over a year later I couldn't be happier with my decision. Although my akita used to be a shelter dog, she's the kindest and sweetest dog I've ever met. So thank you for giving me courage, without you I'd never thought of adopting my angel in the first place :)

As an Akita owner (a rescue American Akita in my case), this is the first Akita video I have seen that makes sense. If you are a calm person in a calm situation and are willing to do your research, and assert your leadership on your dog in a gentle way and enforce rules in your house in the right way; then sure an Akita could work out for you. When you get it right it's hard to describe how sweet and fantastic they are. But if you get an Akita and treat it like you would a Labrador... that's trouble waiting to happen.

I love this! Its so nice to see an Akita owner who actually understands the breed. They're a dignified breed, they need owners who realize this.

I'm hoping to get an Akita Inu as my next dog (currently have 2 huskies, one with some Akita mixed in). Fell in love with the breed when I was living in Japan, and have been continually learning about the breed. Experience might be good, but knowing as much as you can with any breed, how compatible your lifestyle and environment is with them (it drives me crazy when people just want a dog because they superficially like the breed only to give them up when they need more than they thought), and being 100% committed to them, you can make it work even if they're your first dog. So happy for the two of you.

I have an American Akita and everything you said fits my experience. Before getting my Akita I already spent lots of time with Pit Bulls, a Short Haired Terrier and a crazy Irish Setter. I agree with you that a first time owner who would take lots of time and patience, can have an Akita.

OMG i can super relate… i know when my Akita is uncomfortable and i will leave him be. Stubborn but gentle. He needs a lot of socialization. He is gentle with kids but not running towards him. Thanks for the video!

So true, I adopted my girl, my first ever dog, she was 8 months old, she will be 3 next January, She is great with kids if they are allowed to approach slowly. A different breed. I spent hours researching them.

I’ve been really fortunate to have a female Akita that listens to me all the time regardless of a treat. She is the biggest companion. I’ve never had a problem with her and she’s 2 years old now. I now have a male Akita that’s 9 weeks old and everyone told me to be careful when introducing them but my female Akita welcomed him with open arms. They are the best.

Akita was my times dog, had to learn about her personality quickly. She was kinda aggressive and stubborn but loved her greatly. She was not people friendly at all. She give you the side eye as warning. Had her for 14 years and she was the best dog ever!

Everything you say is correct. You have to be an Akita guy to get along with a dog like that. Balanced, patient, sensitive. My Akita Yuuki has already taught me a lot in this regard.

I find akitas very relatable, I also will not follow commands unless I'm given a good reason why I should lol I have some anxiety and having a big dog to protect me helps a lot, so I'm very interested in getting an akita someday,, the more I research the more I feel like an akita in human form lol

My Akita knows if we are leaving the house, he just goes straight in the crate. He is sweet and active and lazy at the same time... I have 2 difficult breeds in the house, Akita and A Shiba.. And I never regret it.

I love this video, have so much good information about the stereotypes if the breed. I have an Akita Inu as my first dog and she is the best dog for me. She is the cutest, loves cuddles and to lay next to me but needs her alone time as well from time to time, mine loves strangers a bit too much, will great people with kisses the first time they come over and we are still working on her manners outside as if she likes someone walking around us will start jumping and doing tricks to gain their attention 😂.Only problem is, I do worry that not everyone likes dogs so need to work on her not trying to jump on strangers.

Akitas are a wonderful breed but they are also very primitive. They don’t want to please you all the time and they won’t listen to you all the time either but if they do it’s on their terms. once you have built a bond with them and they know where they are in the pack, they’re very good dogs. I have two un-neutered males that get along with females puppies but not strange males.

Did you have any problem with aggressiveness? Does he show any reaction if you put your hand on his food while eating?. How does he reacts when friends or family comes to your home? Im thinking of getting an Akita male as a first-time dog, and just like you i'm very stubborn myself and dont really want to get any other kind of breed for "first timers" for the same reason you said on the video. I will spend a lot of time with him and im researching a lot for months/years before getting the puppy.

Hey :) No not at all! I can take his food whenever I want. He will just look at me very very sad and then I will feel sooo guilty and give it back to him haha. But I always took his food from time to time since he was 11 weeks old. Sometimes I will stand next to him while he is eating and annoy him a little bit by touching his food, sometimes I will take his food randomly and give it back to him after a few seconds. He is also just allowed to take his food when I say so. We have a command for this. When somebody is coming to my home and I am opening the door he is very curious but shy. He will come to them without barking, he will sniff and touch them with his head - but he doesn't want to be touched until they gain his trust. This can take several visits. But even when they try to pet him he will just walk away. He would never growl or bite them. Even when 4 children were running at him (the parents are definitely to blame here), he didn't do anything. He was just going backwards and hiding behind me so he could escape them. And he loves other animals. Dogs, Cats, Horses,... he is always so sad when some pets don't like him or when I don't want him to play with them haha. But for example when somebody is standing infront of my door without me knowing it, he will bark from time to time. But that's fine. He just wants to alert me and if I show him that I am okay he will stop. Its good that you want to inform yourself so much before getting one! With a responsible owner they are the sweetest teddy bears ever :)

Hello, I watched your video and I really liked it. I decided to take an Akita to my house because I live alone, but I am 7 hours at work. I will also take him to training to learn the commands !! can the dog stay alone until I come and take it for a walk? any advice?
@tarotheinu
@tarotheinu 2 жыл бұрын
It depends a lot. Taro can be alone for 7 hours without any problems. But he rarely is alone for more than 6 hours. When your dog is still a puppy definitely no. They need to go outside every 1-3 hours for peeing. When Taro was still a pup I left him alone for 5min, next week for 10min, then 30min,… I have cameras in every room to see if he is comfortable being alone.

How do you feel an Akita would do in a Multi Dwelling home type situation? I have the time, space but there is people living above me?

Hi, another Akita owner here. I suggest you get a Cesar Milan Illusion leash. The leash you are using makes the dog instinctivelly push. This is why sled dogs use leashes like that.
@tarotheinu
@tarotheinu 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your advice but I don’t need this kind of leash :) Taro walks perfectly fine on a normal leash and the long leash is for walks in the forest where he can go and do whatever he wants :)

Heyy... So my brother just got an akita puppy, he adores dogs but is a first time dog owner... my brother will eventually live on his own, but we will see him and the akita at least a few times a week... however I'm worried about our relationship with the akita as he grows into a big powerful dog... especially as we are a bit fearful of big dogs... any advice or reassurance ?
@tarotheinu
@tarotheinu 3 жыл бұрын
It’s very important to see the Akita regularly in the beginning so he also bonds with the whole family. I also introduced my family and closest friends from the beginning when taro was still a little potato 😂 And especially in your case when you see the akita a few times a week there shouldn’t be an issue. I understand that such big dogs can seem a little bit scary but Akitas are very loving and gentle to the people they know. Try to get to know the pup when he is still small ☺️ and talk to your brother about your fears and doubts - communication is key ! Good luck 🍀
