lmaoooo i love seeing a reaction from someone who hasnt been anticipating the gender reveal. its always struck me as genius how kureno *lost* his freedom when the curse broke. he used to be cursed but as a bird, the freest animal. and when he could no longer transform he was freed from the curse but was then trapped by his own circumstances and choices- effectively LOSING any freedom and independence he had before when he lost the rooster.

Through Kureno, this episode, to my delight, kind of complements what I missed most about the message behind the character of Tohru: what happens when someone so selfless dedicates themselves to someone bad? I bet Tohru would do exactly what Kureno does now for Akito if she were in the same place.

The twist of Akito being a woman was WAY crazier in the manga because we never heard her voice lol. Also it's funny, in the 2001 anime that twist hadn't been in the manga yet so Akito was voiced by a whole man. Also don't feel bad about feeling bad for child Akito, even in Yuki's flashback we saw that Akito was pretty normal as a kid but then one day just "snapped"

I think Akito snapped when Kureno's curse broke. The realization that the bonds she had weren't forever. Her own actual form of connection (since her dad was dead and we know her mom aint giving her no lover) that she thought would be forever was now in jeaparody. As Akito said to Tohru before the cliff decided to go yeet "I don't want to be alone"

Akito being represented by Camellias is such an interesting and fun detail. Each member of the zodiac (and Tohru) is associated with a flower or a plant, as seen in this ed. And the correlation is pretty accurate 😊 I'm kinda being a nerd here 😅 Thanks for the reaction 😘

To be fair, yuki and akito are drawn almost the same way in the manga, and we know for sure yuki is an androgynous boy so why couldn't akito be the same, most ppl who watch the remake guess akito is a woman fast because of the voice (even tho maya sakamoto is a super famous voice actor who has given life to many boys) . Even more funny, the ppl who watched the first adaptation only where more confused because in that anime Akito has a manly voice, remember that the first adaptation came out years before the ending of the manga, so they Didn't really know what to do with Akito

Exactly my first introduction was the og anime and how was anyone supposed to guess? Like even here there's no difference between her design and most of the male designs in the show. Even here I think it was just that she assumed in the same way people assume Kurapika is a girl at first.

remember when yuki said "one day, akito became twisted" in s2 ep21. yup, that happened after kureno's curse break. akito became more more twisted because this just proved that what ren had been saying was right all along but she couldnt accept it

The plot twists!! I feel like Fruits Basket builds its story and characters so well that it only gets better and better. Season 3 is full of more revelations, but also so much payoff for all the different storylines and relationships so it's my favourite.

Season 2 of Fruits Basket was so much better than season 1 because it had a much different storyline, as well as some interesting plot twists, especially Akito being a woman, which was a bit confusing.

Tbf, in japanese - Touru never mentioned Akito's gender, and nothing was revealed until now, because they always called Akito by her name, and never used any pronouns for her. Only the english subtitles mentioned it in that scene with Touru saying "he"...😅

Banger after banger episodes in S2 and it does not stop in S3! The Akito reveal is wild because the language that's used when speaking of her is typically gender neutral or masculine. Not many people know that Akito is female anyway so at this point Tohru is in the "inner circle" so to speak. I believe the author, Natsuki Takaya, wrote that if she made Akito male that she would have a love story with Tohru 😬.

Fruit basket is one of those story that becomes better chapter after chapter, episode after episode. In my opinion season 2 is far better than season 1 and season 3 is far better than season 2. In summary: a masterpiece.

The gaslighting is so funny, although I still don't know how you first thought Akito was a woman when she looks just like Yuki with black hair. And I might use this episode to add that while under regular life rules I'd be against Kureno and Arisa, Kureno being basically a puppet since he was so young, having no life of his own, means that the usual power imbalance that comes with life experience is not really there, if anything Uo has more life experience than he does.
