Hello! At 6:14 i understand why product 2 will be favored. However, in my textbook, a double bond exists at the alpha carbon and the carbon connected to the hydroxide. Could someone explain why? The reaction takes place with NaOH, H2O at 30 degrees celcius. My textbook mentions how double bonds in these reactions can form when the reaction takes place in 80 to 100 degrees celsius conditions. This I understand. However, could 30 degrees really be enough or is there another reason for double bond formation?
