Star Trek: 30 Years and Beyond was a documentary television special made to commemorate the Star Trek franchise's 30th Anniversary and originally aired live on UPN on 6 October 1996.
Directed by Louis J. Horvitz, who has helmed many live telecasts including many editions of the Academy Awards, and hosted by Ted Danson, the show featured an assortment of montages and a large number of speakers. Among them were Ben Stiller, Joan Collins, John de Lancie, Nichelle Nichols, LeVar Burton, John Larroquette, Marina Sirtis, Avery Brooks, Buzz Aldrin, and Dr. Mae Jemison.

Because they could have included cast they didn't have at the time of the 30th like Jeri Ryan (7 of 9), the cast of Enterprise, the cast of the new movies. And of course a memorial speech for the ones who have passed on (DeForrest Kelley, James Doohan, Majel Barret, Grace Lee Whitney, Leonard Nimoy, the young actor that played Chekov is the re-boot movies, and of course Roddenberry himself).

When the 50th came Star Trek was was not being made apart from the movie by Paramount. CBS is now a completely separate entity and they were not making any Star Trek at that point. In '96 you had DS9 and VOY at full speed., not to mention First Contact as well. The TOS were fairly fresh still from their last appearances in the franchise too. Getting all together was a lot easier during that period than it would be now. I think it's fair to say also that Trek in 96 was bigger than it is now in 2020 for example. Not sure it will ever reach that level of popularity again, but who knows?

The first game I ever played was a very naive alphanumerical game called Star Trek, somewhere in the past eighties, beyond the communist Iron Curtain, in Romania! But there were Kirk, Uhura, Scottie, Spock, everyone of them! That's why now, my eyes are a little bit ...foggy should I say? Beam me up,Scottie!

This was a much better tribute than anything they had for the 50th. They had the casts of all the shows that were around at the time. Enterprise didn't exist yet. Patrick Stewart and Leonard Nimoy were out of the country when this aired but both had recorded a short video to be played for this. The only person I don't recall seeing is Alexander Siddig. The 30th anniversary was Star Trek's first milestone anniversary after then-owners Paramount became part of Viacom. The host, Ted Danson, was a veteran of Paramount's "Cheers", and later starred on "Becker" for the studio, itself having a Trek alum in Terry Farrell (formerly of DS9). During the original run of "Cheers", Kelsey Grammer, who went on to portray his "Cheers" character Frasier Crane on a spin-off series for 11 years, made a guest appearance on TNG.

Star Trek really needs to come back to TV. While the new JJ Abrams films are certainly entertaining, the one thing sorely missing from their formula is the challenging issues and topics which every Trek show before them tackled. That and we having nothing really vested into those "new" characters. New Spock's cry of "Kahn!!!!" in the latest film was no where near as emotional as Old Kirk's because while we know on an intellectual level that New Spock and New Kirk are close friends, we as an audience have barely known them. The JJ films are just thrusting too much at us too fast in the hope that we'll connect and tap into what has already been established in our hearts. In short, we need to get away from the pure action and coat tail riding of the new films and get back to our Trek roots on TV. What form that should take I'm not entirely sure. But I'm afraid with the new films taking center stage we may have shot our hopes for a more intelligent new Trek in the foot. I hope I'm wrong. We'll see... :/

CybershamanX I agree man. I think the series from TOS to Voyager were epic space based tv shows. Bacula, sorry man. I tried to get through 4 seasons of Enterprise, but I kept seeing him as Sam Becket. Over all we have a gaping hole in the space drama genre. No Star Trek, No Farscape, No Babylon 5(minus the first season), No Red Dwarf, No Andromeda(Kevin Sorbo meh, but the show helped fill the space drama hole). I know Im missing something in that list. Dr Who helps fill that gap, but not quite. We need our Captains damn it, we're space nuts not doctors.

Golden Times. Star Trek achieves its glorious time. STTOS, STTNG and ST DS9 (Best for me). Unfortunately, ST VGR and ST ENT start to down the road, but they still much better then those shows of today. I will not even mention their names to do not detract the REAL STAR TREK. Hope one day those who are in command now, find another job and Star Trek would grow up again.

Space the Final frontier, if only humans would band together instead of waging petty wars, theres so much more out there just waiting to be discovered, if more men followed in what Gene had created, the world would be a nicer place overall
