Axanar did in 21 minutes what Discovery couldn't do with a FULL SEASON! Axanar gripped your interest and NEVER let it go! It had you wanting more! Discovery, you needed hydraulic jacks to keep your eyes open due to stupidity and just flashy effects with no storyline or substance!! I watched this as many times as I have seen the original series (40 plus times) and never tire of it! Alec Peters captured Star Trek canon to perfection! He built the bridge between Enterprise in Captain Archer's era to the beginning of the Pike/Kirk eras! The way this story was told in such a short time showed details, depth, and just AWESOME story telling! Any pure fan of Star Trek delights in this series and Star Trek Continues! Two fan based series that is better than ANYTHING CBS, or Hollywood can produce! Note to Hollywood: THIS IS HOW YOU DO STAR TREK!!!!!

The true nobodies are the Hollywood types. They are well known...that is it. Nothing about them is more special, real or better than any of us "normal" people. They are incapable of true creativity or self awareness. To me, real people (such as the makers of this amazing movie) are more passionate, more creative, and above all: more human. Our world would be so much better off if we stopped putting Hollywood and celebrities in general on a pedestal and worshipping them. Years later and still feel such anger towards CBS for their actions against Axanar. This 20 minute prelude is better than an entire season of Discovery. This team should’ve been hired for the series instead of gilmore girls writers clueless about the franchise.
@Moghause5 жыл бұрын
Your anger is misdirected. In IP law, when someone tries to profit from your property, you lose that IP if you don't defend it. CBS had absolutely no choice because Peters bought himself a highly profitable little studio instead of just making the movie like he promised. It's not like they ever went after Star Trek fanfic before that point.
@k1productions875 жыл бұрын
@@Moghause Incorrect. Firstly that is not exactly how IP law works, you are confusing Copyright with Trademark, not quite the same thing. Secondly, the studio was hardly profitable, building the studio was PART of the original Kickstarter (they spelled it out quite plainly, so anyone who acts all blindsided clearly wasn't paying attention at all), AND the first goal of said studio was to make the film. Why did film production stop? Because there was a lawsuit that demanded ALL operations cease until a judgment was reached. They already had constructed the physical sections of the Bridge (full 360 degree, not back quarter segment like most others), Transporter Room, Captain's Quarters, and elements of hallways and the Klingon bridge. So don't start with this "they weren't working on making a film" horse crap. Thirdly, timing is the key factor. This lawsuit happened as they were announcing the formation of CBS All Access with a new Star Trek as its flagship program. If there was a well made Star Trek (that wasn't just a clone of TOS, or obviously fan-made) then the bean counters figured that casual viewers would get confused, and instead of paying for the streaming service, they would go for this free program that they confused for "real Star Trek." It also so happens that Axanar happened to fall in the same time period that Discovery was intended to be in. Fourthly, they did indeed go after other fanfilm productions. Horizon was "warned" not to make their second film, but their first had already been released for months before, and thus made no sense to sue. Particularly since it was Enterprise-era and thus had no impact upon Discovery. Further, as good as it looked, its total green screen filming still looked relatively amateurish, and could in no way get confused for Hollywood production. And that is the primary point of contention here, what the casual viewer would think "real Star Trek" was. On top of that the disgruntled older fans who felt like the studio was betraying them, and felt these fan productions were closer to Star Trek's roots. Fanfilms getting sued was practically inevitable. Axanar just happened to be the one that fell at the right (or in this case wrong) time. If it wasn't Axanar, it would have been Pacific 201 or "Captain Pike." There was a long list of budding fanfilm projects that had their sights set higher and higher. Final point, if Axanar making money was the issue, they would have been shut down completely. But that was not the case, as the lawsuit settlement allowed them to keep ALL the money they raised AND continue to use recognizable Star Trek alumni. The only guideline they had to follow was the two 15-minute episodes guideline. Look, I know its easier to point fingers at the fanfilm guy than the big Hollywood Studio, but you have to realize that the situation is hardly as black and white as you may think. Much like DS9, it is several murky shades of grey.
@cathulhu37724 жыл бұрын
CBS are waste of space. Fans are carrying this but no, they have to monetize a single breath. Look at what fans can do with Witcher in Alzur's Legacy when they are not restricted by shitty, money grabbing assholes.
@gsmith46794 жыл бұрын
jd brisebois Agree, Discovery was kind of...bizarre. I felt the plot jumped around and the storyline was weak. I get that it’s sci fi, but instead of allowing believable stories it seemed whenever the ship was in trouble another more bizarre method was invented to save the day. All flash and little substance IMO.

There is no current Star Trek. There's Discovery, which is clearly in the Starfleet Battles universe and not at all Star Trek in tone, lore, or quality. There's Lower Decks, which is just a goofy cartoon people in the Federation might watch, but it's not Trek itself. There's Picard, which is clearly an alternate future. There's JJ-Trek, which is just The Trek And The Furious. Star Trek's IP re-used for bad action movies with no brain or heart. But there is no current Star Trek. The closest thing, spiritually speaking, is The Orville. But that's an homage, not Star Trek itself.

It's a phenomenon of the age. The official owners of various franchises are raping the products they hold. Those halfwits are enslaved to sentiments they IMAGINE they must cater to, in order to do business. They are wrong. On the other hand, fans do fantastic work to carry the torch. Fans who have a correct understanding of the spirit of their favored franchise, coupled with delightful artistic talent. Warhammer 40k has probably been the most active frontier in this war. Another example is World of Warcraft. In Star Wars, too, we can thank especially the Canadian writer Drew Karpyshyn for his work on Darth Bane and Revan. Axanar seems to be it for Star Trek. You could tell he really was into the roll. If they HAVE to replace I say go with Michael Ironside. He's a great heavy, fantastic voice, has that just little bit of cheese that a Klingon needs to be over the top. He can't be much more expensive than Richard Hatch for two 15 min webisodes that he will probably only appear in for like 5 minutes tops. Someone above mentioned Michael Biehn would probably be good too, he has that serious yet hint of cheese too that would make a Klingon proud and in the right age group and probably price range too.

This 21-minute short film captures the heart, the soul, the legacy and the absolute love of pure "Star Trek" more than anything that the corporations have spat out since 2009. I want so much to see this film completed.

I can see why CBS/Paramount got nervous, this is just a little too good. Some nice, very subtle echoes of Heinlein in this. Much better than any of the official stuff they've done this century.

"It was..... _frustrating_ .....to fight Starfleet." I laughed out loud. How am I only just seeing this now?? The contrast with the last few official outings is overwhelming. By what staggering series of errors were these people not hired to make a new series? Four million views here on KZbin. Who knows how many more if this had gone network/studio? The idea that an executive would pass on this to slap a once-beloved name on a mediocre action-comedy like _Beyond_ is, well, beyond me.

THIS video features an excellent, believable plot, good story telling, fantastic characters and superb acting. It's such a departure from what is featured by the major motion picture companies where "action" movies forgo all of the above and try to use explosions and CGI effects to push a story. There's simply no comparison. If Axanar were released to movie theaters, I'd PAY to go and see it........

true it was disasterous, but at least the ship designs were on-point for a series/project set as a prequel to TOS. What's your own excuse for how the seemingly advanced and holographic USS Discovery that looks as high-end as the Enterprise-J, ends up going to the Constitution-Class NCC-1701 as the next leg in ship development?
@doughorton36356 жыл бұрын

What I like most about "Axanar" is that it respects the original series. Too bad that we can't take Star Trek away from CBS because they haven't been a good steward of Gene Roddenberry's vision.
@subraxas5 жыл бұрын
It respects it to a certain point. In canon, the Constitution Class was NOT conceived as a warship necessitated by the 4 Years War; it was actually first launched about two years prior to it. Please do not get me wrong, because I do adore this mini-film and am very glad that it exists. I am just striving to be objective and fair here. P.S. - Where are the solid red, non-transparent bussard collectors and the "spikes" on them?

There can't be as a result of the lawsuit Paramount and CBS filed. nothing more than 15 minutes per episode, no follow on episodes, and if you have something longer 30 minutes is the upper limit for the production. These folks were making fine adventures in this world, and the IP holders that aren't got all pissed off about it. Probably jealous at the quality and thought that went into it which exposed how weak their on staff is.
