IMHO Al Di Meola is absolutely guitar genius , there is only 1 more such person playing in different style, namely John McLoughlin. The 2 other geniuses were: Paco de Lucia and Halswarth (RIP) although the music of the last one was not understandable for me, I did view his music like experiments with very strange, "exotic" modes and sscales, but I couldn't find melody or feeling.

Al writes beautiful music, truly one of the GREATS to study! I noticed on his Ovation that there is a connection to a synth and it tracks with his guitar? What exactly is this equipment that he activates when playing the distorted parts of the tune?

Yep it is a midi and he control it with a footswitch.
