One of the things I love the best about Al's playing is how he plays the time. He's a master of syncopation. You can feel the pulse...but his playing is all over the place - yet it still fits. Amazing. You typically only see really advanced percussionists doing that.

@hartistry1957 I feel the exact same way. The first time I say him was at one of the private night concerts at the NAMM show in Anaheim in the 80's. EVH, Satriani and George Lynch were in the audience and at one point all three of them stood up and their mouths were gaped open. I knew then I was seeing something special. Al definately inspired me to play better and with more feeling.

I don't care that there are a million D'meola fans; All I care is the fact there ARE millions of D'meola fans. This guy inspired me to play my Les Paul the way it was meat to be played. Thanks for the inspiration AL.

I agree totally but much if not all this just like John McLaughlin & Mahavishnu Orchestra goes right over their heads & the just can't grasp it. Saw Al & Chick a few times in the 70s with Return To Forever & Mahavishnu O, in 73 when Birds of Fire came out & though i am a rock player since the 60s this music and Fusion were huge inspirations ,for those that don't get it it's their loss & a huge one it is.

Favorite composition from Al Di Meola's Casino album. RTF are my favorites, as the journalists say, the jazz rock band and McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report has some good stuff. My favorite bass player is Chris Squire(rip) from the band Yes, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Jaco Pastorius. Chick Corea keyboards and Joe Zavinul(rip)

As far as the who's the best war. Paco de Lucia was a guest on Elegant Gypsy and actually played Al's arrangement. Do you really think Paco, the greatest player you will ever hear period, would be interested in jamming with Satch or Vai? of course. but also the opinion of almost every major jazz rock guitarist of that era, 1969 to 1975., many of whom were personal friends of mine, so I knew their opinions as well. LC, JM, JA, RG, DT, as well as bass players. all of them. Al is also universally considered a straight up a hole by those same people, including chick himself as well as Stanley - musicians have always tolerated conceit and arrogance among themsleves for the greater goal of creating music.

@edshift . I agree, classy guitar work on all. I consider AL Di one of the best guitarist around many similar to him. These type of musicians are serious about their art, if I may say. The " Caravaserai" album was a superb album, (Santana of course). For one album from more than 30 yrs ago, it remains a class of its own.

Why is he looking at that music stand? He would have been playing this song for 30 years by the time of this concert. It's not a difficult track - in terms of chord progressions or key or anything like that. Especially the part of the song where he keeps looking at the music. That part is basically just solo over a F#11 vamp. The band isn't playing any structured motif there. Just seems odd.

Sorry, but I have no idea what you are trying to say. But all of the guitarists you've named are on the "no duh" list. Of course I know who all of those guitarists you've named are. I've been listening to most of them for the better part of 30 years. Love 'em all. I'm just not a big Santana fan.
