Al-Farabi - The Second Master (Episode 3):
Centuries before Karl Marx proposed his influential dialectic and Max Weber explored the utility of the division of labour, a multi-talented Central Asian philosopher musician by the name of Abu Nasr Al-Farabi laid the intellectual framework for which these ideas where developed from. Contributing heavily to the fields of Music Theory and Social science, Al-Farabi is best remembered for his seminal social science text "Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City".
Inspired by Plato's Republic, Al-Farabi's text combined Platonic, Aristotelean and Islamic Virtues to systemise a practical guide for the creation of Utopian (or "Virtuous") City States. According to Al-Farabi, In these Utopian City States, rules would be just, enlightened and equitable, and citizens would live each according to their ability and to each according to their needs. Al-Farabi is also known to have worked along side the prominent Christian Philosopher Yahya ibn Adi, and is celebrated as an intellectual ambassador of the Central Asian and Khorasan region (having either Turkish or Turkmen heritage). Additionally, Al-Farabi is adored for his works on music with Al-Farabi being an early pioneer in the systemisation of Music.

What my book told,after being in discussion along with many other scholars inside the palace of the caliph harun abdul Rashid,solving way better arguments on Islamic sharia,they took a break and at the moment the caliph calls for musicians to perform.he offers to one of musician if he may play,so he starts arranging the instrument called gambus that's what i read of and everyone heard burst in laughter nonstop because of his arrangement. The word "Farab" is a Persian term for a locale that is irrigated by effluent springs or flows from a nearby river. The older Persian Parab or Faryab (also Paryab), is a common Persian toponym meaning "lands irrigated by diversion of river water". Farabi's parents were of Persian descent. His father "was an army captain of Persian extraction." A Persian origin. Farabi's works contain references and glosses in Persian, Sogdian. Sogdian has also been suggested as his native language and the language of the inhabitants of Farab which was an Iranian-speaking Central Asian origin. Farabi was a Persian Philosopher

It is often the case with earlier thinkers in the medieval period that very little primary sources reach us through time. For this reason, not much can be ascertained about al-Farabi’s early life. Only a portion of their texts on philosophy and science have reached us as well, so biographical sources are even less.

You’re correct to say Turkey didn’t exist back then. However from the research we have done his ancestry dates back to the people of modern day Turkey or Turkmenistan. That being said, Al-Farabi spoke Persian and grew up among Persian culture.

‘Islamic Philosophy An Introduction’ by Oliver Leaman is a good beginners book to Islamic philosophy in general and the ideas of various thinkers in the Islamic philosophical tradition. Peter Adamson also has a well written introductory book on the topic. We would also recommend ‘A History of Islamic Philosophy’ by Majid Fakhry for the more advanced reader. ‘Islamic Philosophy from its Origin to the Present’ by S.H Nasr is another option. Perhaps the most comprehensive work is the Routledge ‘History of Islamic Philosophy’ edited by S.H Nasr and Leaman
