Al put the "soul" into romantic music. What other Black man do you know who can take a pop classic hit from none other than The timeless Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun" and fully embrace & embody the song, putting his own stamp on it with so much soul into the song that you almost forget that it originally was a straightlaced classic pop tune before he slapped some serious Memphis southern soul onto it. Only Al Green could do that. Only Al Green, in America's post Jim Crow segregation period, would have the musical bonafides and the status to dare touch such a pop classic without an outcry from popular society in the early 70's. People tend to forget that Al in his prime was the #1 male artist in the world during his run of BillBoard Number 1 hits (beginning with "Let's Stay Together") and album after album on the American BillBoard Top Ten list. The man was breaking both Elvis and the Beatles musical records He wasn't just popular from within the Black community; he was, at one point, the most sought after recording artist in the "world". Period. Sometimes we forget what a musical trailblazer he was; of course mainly because most of the time we just connect him to our personal life experience. At least I know that I did back in the 70's when he was blazing the music world. I thought he was just like any one of my many other cousins from back home in the farmland South, who just happen to sing magnificiently, which was his golden ticket to the stars. Yet, I can't think of one other Soul Balladeer who did what Al did in his day with the numerous Pop and Soul #1 One & Top 10 hit love songs not being affiliated with Motown or coming from a recognized popular singing group as Smokey Robinson did when he left the Miracles. Even Smokey wasn't breaking the music industry records globally back in that time as a solo artist as did Al Green. Al Green stood alone amongst American artists (Pop/Rock or Soul) in this regard, in the early 70's. He is a true living legend.

When I was growing up, it was not uncommon for artists like Al Green to play in our little clubs, and “holes in the wall”, as my mom called them. He came to Bowdon, GA once but I was too young to go see him. Artists were more humble during that time. They would play at colleges, also. Al Green was so smooth. I remember staying up for hours to hear his rotation on the local radio station. I still say that we had the best music.💜

You are wrong Cameron .. even tho i very much understand where you are coming from. But lets not compare Brown and Green at all .. because there is no point. Both will live forever. In that historical performance the band was so exceptional that they made al Green want to be James Brown .. but he knew he can't, should not and he does not have to .. so he gave the audience all of Green .. and i cry.

@Kairi Ali When ppl ask me who has THE greatest voice in the history of R&B, I always say Al Green or Marvin Gaye (personally I like Al's voice just a tad bit more). The depth of soul in both their voices is incomparable, IMO. Whether it's R&B with Al or Marvin as individuals, or Led Zeppelin's soul/blues as a rock band, whenever I need a GOOD dose of soul in my diet, I just need to listen to one of those three, and I'm good!

He was everything you said he is and so much more, I'm now 49 and he's my favorite artist of all time , his voice was blessed from the heavens , although he only did secular music for short time it was sheer perfection and he could move your heart and soul .
