such a powerful and beautiful song...the song was submitted to late for an Oscars nomination, had it been would have won hands down

Over Say you say me? or even Separate Lives? Doubtful. Submitted late? so the other ten nominations were submitted late for the movie? Makes no sense.

This video is a compilation video from the movie, however, there was an original video of Melissa Manchester & Al Jarreau singing the song with Out Of Africa staging. The single was released after the popularity of the soundtrack with added lyric to John Barry’s theme by Marilyn & Alan Bergman. The soundtrack ‘Special Edition’ was released with the 12 original tracks and this song added as the 13th track. CD’s were starting to sell more than LP’s and for some reason, the Special Edition version was only released in the U.K. and some other countries, but not the states. I still have a couple of these CD’s with this song on it. MCA released a 2 CD version of Melissa Manchester’s Mathematics LP from 1985 entitled ‘The MCA Years’ on Real Gone Music in 2018. Although Melissa only released one album on MCA, she recorded many songs for them at that time. In 1979, she recorded I’ll Never Say Goodbye (Theme From The Promise) on MCA (which is included as one of the bonus tracks) for the first time on CD. That song was one of two songs nominated and performed at the Academy Awards by Melissa Manchester, making Oscar history. The other song she performed was called Theme From Ice Castles (Through The Eyes Of Love) written by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager released on her main label, Arista, at the time, and became one of her classic song staples. Melissa and Al Jarreau performed on PBS Soundstage in 1977. They recorded together twice with this song and in 2015 Big Light, a single and remixed dance hit single from Melissa’s album You Gotta Love The Life. I believe it was one of Al Jarreau’s last songs before he past away. RIP Al Jarreau.

I thank Retrospective Soundtrack for this gorgeous melding of music and memories from "Out of Africa". I really don't think I ever fully appreciated the film until I saw this particular video. For one thing, I know I'd never noticed before how lovingly Robert Redford as "Denys" looks at Karen (Meryl Streep) throughout the story. Perhaps it's the fact that we don't hear any dialogue, and so we become immersed in the images. Still, that is some exquisite emotion captured by Robert Redford. I have new respect for him now.

Wasn’t this song being played during the closing credits? I’d gone to the theater to see this in ‘85, yet when I see this being shown on a movie channel, this song is absent. Why is that?
@vivianpowell17324 жыл бұрын
This recording by Melissa Manchester and Al Jarreau was included on my cassette tape of the soundtrack from "Out Of Africa", but not on the CD I bought a few years later. This is just a beautiful rendition. Some have commented that it does not fit in because it was not featured in the movie, and therefore it's not part of the soundtrack. I absolutely love it. What's wrong with a little lagniappe?

I had the cassette and remember the song so vividly , the reason I bought it years ago. Too bad about the CD😩

I saw this movie in ‘85, and “The Music Of Goodbye” was played during the closing credits. It’s the only way that I’d known about this song, because I’d sat through the credits just to hear it w/ my date. Strange that it was later removed from the movie.

Nice attempt with melding video of the film with the music. Damn I wish I could see the original clip in HiDef. Its bloody fantastic - one of the best clips I've ever seen. The DOP on the film really knew his stuff and when mixed with images of Melissa and Al and the beautiful song... what more can I say apart from for me, that clip and the section from the Miami Vice episode Definitely Miami (Cry - by Godley and Crème) are top icons and define the 80's style.
