Another memorable broadcast he did was also in a different sport, but for a more tragic reason. He was in San Francisco to cover game 3 of the 1989 World Series between the Giants and A's. They had only been on the air for a few minutes when the Loma Prieta earthquake shook up the Bay area.

Al, I actually was a 9 year old boy at the time. My dad had died a year earlier, and I had few occasions to smile in those dark days. But even now nearly 40 years later I remember the thrill of watching the Miracle on Ice.

Listening to people talk about this event specifically has always been incredibly strange to me, especially on a show like this. My dad's cousin is/was Herb Brooks, so I am very intimately familiar with this. I am especially sensitive to it because of the relationship my dad had with Herb. After my dad's dad died when he was five, the Brooks family took him and his brother (my uncle) in for a large portion of their young life. My dad will still say that Herb became a father figure to him, as there was a bit of an age gap between them. The day Herb died was an incredibly odd day. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen my dad cry. That day was one of them. I am always so incredibly hesitant to talk about my relation to this event and the man, because I feel like people will just accuse me of seeking attention or something silly. In fact, I've been debating with myself for the last 15 minutes if I should click the post button or not.

+William Weller So glad you did post it. Your family changed the way this country thought about itself during those few weeks in Lake Placid. Let that sentence sink in. There might be more historical events in the country, both past and future but on that one day, all Americans felt a swell of national pride. In my lifetime, I would put the lunar landing next to that game/Olympics

William Weller I know it's been a year since you posted this. I will tell you as one of the people who lived through this time (I was a freshman in HS). The feeling I got from watching it happen, then watching it in the movie was an amazing flashback. Herb was an amazing man. Your family is our family in that we are Americans. Your family did what no politician in America could do at that time. Let us believe in ourselves. That is something to be proud of. On a personal note, I am sorry for your loss and thank you for reminding us that these are real people.

0:25 There was no semi-finals or finals. It was a round robin tournament. It USA-Soviet Union and Finland-Sweden were semifinals, how come a tie between Finland and Sweden puts Finland into "final" against USA, and Finland loses and does not get silver medal, but Soviets do? It was all about wins and points in games where two top teams from two preliminary groups met in round robin medal round. USA finished with 2-1-0 and five points, winning the gold. Soviets finished with 2-0-1 and four points, winning the silver. Sweden finished with 0-2-1 and two points, winning the bronze. Finland finished with 0-1-2 and one point, and 4th.

@joe6096
@joe6096 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. It was broadcast live on CBN and there are people around New York that were lucky enough to catch it live. Particularly in hospitals because hospital patient TV antennas tend to be more powerful than consumer antennas. I’ve read that people who were patients or nurses working in hospitals around New York that night were lucky enough to catch it live out of Canada.
