Tommy Lasorda was also a great story teller.

I think it was Orel Hershiser that said Tommy was the only person he had ever met that could use the "F" word as the noun, verb, and direct object in the same sentence....lol

In 2010 my son and I spent the weekend in Cooperstown for the HOF induction ceremonies. We are in the lobby of the Otesaga Hotel mingling with some of the HOFers who were in attendance. My son excuses himself to use the restroom. After at least ten minutes, I’m wondering what’s happened to my son. I enter the restroom to investigate, and there’s Tommy Lasorda telling my son story after story about life in the Major Leagues. He’s got my kid and the guy standing next to him (Tony Perez) in stitches. My son said, listening to Lasorda was the best part of his weekend! Imagine Lasorda “holding court” in the restroom. What a guy!!!

I used to work for the Dodgers in the 90s and ran some of the merchandise stands for about 13 years. When I would come in through the gates, typically about 2 or 3 in the afternoon, sometimes over a hundred degrees, everyday Tommy would pitch batting practice for hours, way before the start of the game, yelling inspiring quotes while pitching like " you get sweeter milk from a happy cow " A couple of times, I ran into Tommy and Mrs Lasorda getting out of their car, both very pleasant. BUT one thing that pissed Tommy off was as an employee. DON'T ever let him catch you wearing a hat for another team He would let you know, a GREAT ambassador

My favorite LaSorda moment out of his many that would qualify doesn't actually involve a 'game' at all. Well, yes and no. August 1988 on the road at Philadelphia. Between innings the Phillies mascot Philly Phanatic was parading around the infield with a fat LaSorda mannequin/pillow stuffed, uniformed dummy of Tommy entertaining fans of a team over 20 games out of first place (the Dodgers would go on to win the World Series just 2 months later vs the A's known famously for Kirk Gibson's dramatic walk off homerun against Eckersley to win the game). Tommy wasn't having any of it, chasing the Phanatic in his oversized, paunchy green costume with the hornblower nose. If you've never seen it I encourage you to find it on KZbin. Pure comedy gold lol

Not to correct AL Michael's but Spokane wasn't the AAA affiliate of the Dodgers it was the Albuquerque Dukes. Those teams of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey that he mentioned I use to go see in the 70's at the Albuquerque Sports Stadium.

The true sign of Al Michaels' professionalism goes back to that era of his career. In Hawaii, he would be hired to do local radio of high school basketball games. Nothing would challenge an announcer as much as four Samoans on a fast break.

Yes the Indians were one of the greatest minor league baseball teams of all time. The Indians won the 1970 Pacific Coast League Championship after winning their division by 26 games. That Indians team swept Hawaii 4-0 in the championship series.

Now that minor league team under LaSorda would have been something to see. I lived in Hawaii for quite a few years and I went to an Islanders' game just once. This was in the 1980s and that team had to be the worst I've ever seen. The fans shagging the foul balls were more exciting and more energetic than the Islanders! I remember that Carl Yazstremki's kid was playing and boy oh boy did he stink! We booed him all night long. Just horrible! The college ball was much better in Honolulu...and an amazing view of Diamond Head in the outfield!
