I saw Al Murray live a few years ago, it's an insane set. His pub landlord persona is still really popular here and maybe even gaining a little traction again, given current political climate. Al Murray is a top bloke, a British national treasure and overall legend.

These are all original material he has a theme in mind and then just goes with the flow according to audience response. A very intelligent man with an awesome mind. As someone pointed out he has a keen interest in military history. He did a short series fot TV where he accompanied a team of historians and archaeologists visited world war 1 battle sites and uncovered relics. Uniform buttons, military kit, munitions and in one episode bits of a British bi plane. Al brought history to life with understanding and compassion.

guys what you dont see by doing clips, al first part of the show, is the front row audience, thats how he knows there names, makes fun on, like the older guy pop's, or the young ones, he gets to know them, then adds them into his show, genius if you ask me,

He does a lot of talking to people in the audience, he gets their names and often comes back to them for a joke later on in the show. Although he does have a sort of routine he uses a load of improvisation using the crowd.

There's a lot say son is affectionate but like most things in Britain it depends on the context. Son used to be a lot more common, so it's used to mock people at times. "Get in there, my son" - can be your friend doing something like pulling a girl or scoring a goal. But a pig (police) might say "You're nicked, my old son". That's pretty old school, but context is king. Here it's to denote just a younger male, the most American way I can think of is 'sport' or 'buddy'.

If we're having a discussion, and I'm at a loss for argument, I might say "Listen son!" That's supposed to put you down a bit. Then you say "Well, you listen Pops!" That's the context. It's not polite, but we use it in banter situations - for a laugh. No fists will fly.
