I cannot see, in any scenario or universe, where Al Neri would ever betray the Corlione family, not after what Michael and Don Vito said to him and about his character. He was to Michael as Calo was to Don Tommasino…loyal to the end.
@drbigmdftnu Жыл бұрын
I was so happy to see Calo take on such an important, trusted role in GF3. I was always kind of concerned he would be lumped in with Fabrizio and killed. Credit to Michael to look past the obvious, research it, and have full confidence that Calo was loyal. Pretty sure, in the book, Calo is killed by the bomb along with Appolonia.

I’d like to know what was going through Al Neri’s mind when Michael walks over to Fredo and they embrace at their momma’s wake. It kinda appears to be a look of WTF. I think Al immediately realizes that Michael is just keeping his enemy closer. That’s why Fredo is so at ease in the fishing boat with Al when Al shoots him. Michael does seem to regret it in part 3. In many ways, Michael, Tom, and Al were a well-balanced trifecta at the top of the Corleon family. Not one of these men were stupid, and all three possessed unwavering loyalty. After the death of Tom, Connie rose to replace him and proved an able adivsor in her own right, with Al Neri again standing by the side of the family as one of them. Luca Brazi is a man only for violent tumultuous times, but Al Neri is a man for all all seasons. Men like Luca are only for a moment, but an Al Neri is forever.

Comparing Luca Brasi with Al Neri would be like comparing a Tetsubo to a Katana, an Artillery piece to an Assault Rifle and to ask which was better would reveal a failure to appreciate two primary points, the necessity to, as they say "use the right tool for the job." and to the goals and preferred methodology of the Dons in question. An answer of sorts to this question would be, Both and neither as each have their particular uses, advantages and disadvantages in relation to the tasks they'd be applied to. Don Vito had need of Luca in the times they moved in, not using Luca in every situation in the same way as Don Micheal employed Al to achieve the desired particular outcomes in their time. Neither Luca or Al were interchangeable, though both had the comparable qualities needed to fulfill their intended roles each would do so in their own way.

If I had to choose an enforcer, it would be Al Neri. As you rightly pointed out, Neri could blend in with a sophisticated crowd and come across as a gentleman; basically, the sort of man you'd encounter at a chamber of commerce banquet. Then your other point comes into play. Neri knows how to become intimidating when necessary and he was ready for brutality if the situation called for it. Neri was an assassin's dagger. Luci Brasi was a battle axe.

I don't think anyone is going for Brasi given that his presence unsettled Don Vito himself, and because he only gave his loyalty to Don Vito that he almost killed Tom Hagen and it took Don Vito's direct intervention where he had to pay Brasi to forget about what Tom did which was unknowingly sleeping with Brasi's GF.
