First time I heard this speech I thought it was a motivational football speech. Now years later after losing 2 sons, my ex wife leaving me and almost dying from a ruptured appendix, man does this hit different. When I lost both of my sons 8 years apart, I just wanted to roll up and die. I am thankful that I kept waking up each day scratching and clawing for the next inch.

A bit of the point. Youth Sports is about teaching kids to become proper adults, it's a (mostly) safe way to face adversity, learn to work together, improve yourself, be responsible, be accountable, learn to follow, learn to lead. Extend that out, because it all became a business and along the way the Wins became more important than the Growth... so not everyone that makes it to the NFL got the life coaching aspects of Sports. Sports is a way to represent life, to prepare us for our Adulthood. So really, Sports is about life... it's a simulation of life. Sports lessons are Life lessons.

I’m a first generation college student. During my time in college, I had to spend nearly 40 hours a week just to complete the lab section for a class called microprocessor applications. I spent so much time working on this one course, I was failing my other classes and had to stop dating the girl I was with, and I was still barely passing microprocessors. Never in my life have I ever felt so depressed and lonely. I would watch this video everyday and cry almost my entire junior year. Today I graduated with my degree, and I’m watching this video with tears of joy. I’ll never forget the sacrifices I had to make to succeed in doing this degree and I’ll never forget the motivation this speech gave me when times were tough.

Life is soo hard sometimes that you can't even make yourself get up from bed, that you can't stand the person in the mirror. This year for me was the hardest in my life. Huge problems with my girlfriend, broke my jaw, stop working out, really lost the point of living and any sense of direction. I think its time to take the advice and fight for every inch, fight for every minute and finally dare to try. I listen to this speech everyday, and also when life is hard. Life is a game of inches. I can only succeed by getting it right, the one thing that is happening right now. I focus on that single thing. I work one step at a time. It's impossible to finish a ten mile hike if on the way out of the house I step on a rock that causes me to stumble. By getting one thing right, over time, momentum is created.
@Modi435 жыл бұрын
It's actually definitely still possible after that :) "It's impossible to finish a ten-mile hike if on the way out of the house I step on a rock that causes me to stumble."
@kpec34 жыл бұрын
Modi43 Yes that is true. But walking at any distance happens by each step landing the right way. Therefore, each step is important. Each step can propel me or can trigger a landmine. If I build a house of brick, if I skip where a brick should go, there is a gap in the structure. As weight is built, the gap makes the wall too weak. The wall starts to bow and sag, and when one wall collapses, the roof caves and everything's gone. So if I get today right, then tomorrow can be without recompence.

Been listening to this speech almost everyday for years....I suffer from bad depression and anxiety, ither mental health issues, sometimes I feel so alone and out of place and like I can’t understand the place I live in this world...many days I don’t want to be here anymore...but this speech and his voice have saved me every single time.... even him starting out with “I don’t know what to say really...” gives me chills I can’t describe....

This speech means everything to me. I lost my dad last year, and when I think about him, I always revert back to the line where he says: “When you get old in life, things get taken from you. That’s part of life. But you only learn that, when you start losing stuff”. I made sure that instead of learning that when it happens, to never take anything for granted ever again. It helped me recover from setbacks quicker. It helped me battle back the tears and realise how true that statement is. Every single person on this earth faces grief and pain. It’s life. Just remember whatever you’re going through at that specific moment, someone you know has also went through it. And I’m sure that person would say the same thing that I will say: It will pass. Stay strong and use it as a springboard to better things.

One of the greatest movie monologues of all time. Pacino slips in the little things - like scratching his head at 1:33 - in his typically brilliant way. His cadence and volume add to a marvelously written speech. Good stuff.

My dad is newly paralyzed from the neck down. We have been in the hospital for 4 months and after many hard fought battles, many personal sacrifices, I will finally be able to take him home! Let me tell you, early on in this, I did not know if I could do this. But my struggles are nothing compared to what he has endured. My dad is my hero and is the reason I am alive today. We will NEVER GIVE UP! The steeper the hill, the stronger we grow. While we may get the shit kicked out of us - There is nothing we can’t beat…no matter how turbulent the storm is, it will never be strong enough to blow us down.

John Logan and Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay. You can hear Stone’s voice- trained and attuned to classical literature. When I see this I think of Antony’s speech in “Julius Caesar.” The self deprecation at the beginning and then then the emotional climax at the end. Very similar structurally, but adapted brilliantly to this story and executed to perfection by Pacino.
@justinjschneider3 жыл бұрын
1:44 by divorcing visual from audio, stone shows the audience that this scene is from willie's perspective. tony's observation of time makes willie reflect on his own past, present and future. willie sees tony communicating directly to him.
