Scorsese is known for rapid firing dialogues but this has got to be one his best moments as a director. Slow dialogue, no score for most of the time and just perfect editing and acting. Cinema at its purest state.

Scorsese likes to go off script sometime, even his editor Thelma Schoonmaker said that most of the scenes in each of his movies aren't in the script. Literally improvisation at its best right there, this scene can be scripted yet improvised at the same time

What I love about this is how Jordan Belfort, the smooth talking salesman and con artist, got played by a FBI agent, using the exact same tactics he used to bilk people from millions of dollars.. The FBI agent builds rapport ("aw shucks, my boss just threw this case on my desk") , and then sits back and lets Jordan lay out all the rope to hang himself ("He who talks first, loses")

It's called entrapment, and can be used as a defense during a criminal prosecution. The defendant would have to prove that they would not have committed the crime if the entrapment didn't occur.

I think that, along with the fact that he was just humble beside Jordan. He wasn't pulling rank as an FBI agent or in anyway trying to put himself in position above Jordan. He presented himself as just an average everyday Joe, having to do the work his boss gives him. That would have played massively into Jordan's ego leading him to make that bribe offer to try and help the poor guy. Jordan thought he would play them, but got played instead.

This whole scene was an exact mirror to that of Jordan teaching the first brokers at Stratton Oakmont how to reel in an idiot on the phone. Everything that came out of Agent Denhams mouth sounded exactly like something Belfort would use in his script. *”Whoever speaks first loses”* That’s why this scene is *exactly* at the half way point of the film. It’s the moment the game is flipped on Jordan, this the moment Jordan meets the person who has not only played his game longer than he has, but better.

4:25 was stunning, and gave me Edward Snowden vibes; the atmosphere changed so dramatically as the FBI agent’s true guise revealed itself. Not to mention the pan out with the partner standing MUCH closer added to the creepy, “we’re listening” vibe.

At around 4:20, you can see on the FBI agent's face that he's shedding the facade of being the "woe-is-me agent that falls for Belfort's charisma" and turns into a no-nonsense ruthless FBI agent. I love it.

The dialogue, the acting, the editing, the pace, everything is absolutely on point! I love the way they act like they appreciate each other at first, and the more they go into the convo the more they reveal themselves, Jordan as a crook trying to bribe him and the cop acting like he's interested "opportunity is everything", until the grand finale : "can you say that again, just the way you said it?" and then: "When you sail on a boat fit for a Bond villain sometimes you need to play the part, right? I think it's time you both get the f*ck off my boat!" Scorsese is next level!

Great scene. It was great to see a film where the star, DiCaprio in this case, doesn't get to use all the other actors as foils to come out smelling like a rose in every scene. Kyle Chandler's character gave it right back to DiCaprio's character where he lived. That was fantastic and gave the true narrative a real feel.

This movie was a cinematic masterpiece. Cut any minute long clip from this movie and you will find an instance acting and storytelling so good that people like Bay or Snyder can't make in their entire lifetime. Every scene is so meticulously composed that you start to feel the same emotions that the scene is trying to evoke without any difficulty, like Brad's frustration when he deals with Donnie or like here, where the Belfolts venom can be felt for not getting what he wanted

What I think is gold about this scene. He mentions the careers that get “skinned alive.” Firefighters and teachers are fair professions to name in a scenario like this but he specifically says “FBI agents.” To include him in the conversation to make it seem more real to him. The average man having this conversation would never stop to mention about a FBI agent getting skinned alive financially.
