I love Al Pacino just as much as the next guy. He's a fantastic actor with amazing talent. But I'm not willing to praise him for being able to abuse substances and still be rich and famous. He is in a very rare position. He has a job that does not require handling machinery, caring for patients, educating students, etc. His job is very private and very filtered to the public. Because of his acting talent, he is able to show up to work under the influence, perform, then go home. No one will say a word to him. However, had he not made it as an actor, he would be just like any other substance abuser. Would you want him working in your kid's school? Would you want him to manage your healthcare and well-being? Would you want him working with you in a factory or an ambulance? Of course not. Realize that you are only praising him because he has been extremely lucky with where he has landed in life. If he were anywhere else doing anything else, you would not praise him. Quite the opposite, actually. Your praise for him only drives him deeper and deeper into his abusive relationship with substances. I'm positive there is a side of him that longs for more out of life than being fucked up all the time. It's fun as hell, I get it. Trust me, I've been there. But it's an empty kind of fun. One that does not and never will fulfill the human spirit. It's sad to see anyone praise it.

Most of the people don't understand what sober means to an alcoholic in treatment. He is not saying he is still a drunk, he is sober from that but alcoholism is a disease of the mind and spirit and although not drinking one can behave in a manner that is not sober. But the first funeral you go to when you hear a grown man sobbing and two teenagers crying uncontrollably because of how bad they feel about telling their mother they hated her a month before she died drunk takes some of the fun out of the laughing- in- the- face- of-buzzkills nature of some of this. A common misconception is that drunks drink to feel good. Drunks end up drinking because they feel like shit when they don't. Then they find out they feel like shit when they do but they can't stop.
