Been sober for 3 years. It sucked all 3. I drink now but only if I had a bad day. That daily battle to not drink just left me. The whole addiction thing just went away. Same happened to my dad. I cant explain it. Now I can go months without drinking and not care. Before it was hard to go a day. Why I can still drink sometimes and just put it down, I dont know. Something just left inside me with it.

I had the same thing. Never had an addiction to it until I went through a tragedy in my 20s. I drank all the time for about a year or so and then it stopped working. It got me through the hard time and then I just didn't need it the same way and it didn't feel the same. Thank God.

I love Al Pacino just as much as the next guy. He's a fantastic actor with amazing talent. But I'm not willing to praise him for being able to abuse substances and still be rich and famous. He is in a very rare position. He has a job that does not require handling machinery, caring for patients, educating students, etc. His job is very private and very filtered to the public. Because of his acting talent, he is able to show up to work under the influence, perform, then go home. No one will say a word to him. However, had he not made it as an actor, he would be just like any other substance abuser. Would you want him working in your kid's school? Would you want him to manage your healthcare and well-being? Would you want him working with you in a factory or an ambulance? Of course not. Realize that you are only praising him because he has been extremely lucky with where he has landed in life. If he were anywhere else doing anything else, you would not praise him. Quite the opposite, actually. Your praise for him only drives him deeper and deeper into his abusive relationship with substances. I'm positive there is a side of him that longs for more out of life than being fucked up all the time. It's fun as hell, I get it. Trust me, I've been there. But it's an empty kind of fun. One that does not and never will fulfill the human spirit. It's sad to see anyone praise it.

Most of the people don't understand what sober means to an alcoholic in treatment. He is not saying he is still a drunk, he is sober from that but alcoholism is a disease of the mind and spirit and although not drinking one can behave in a manner that is not sober. So he will never defeat alcohol which is the answer to the question asked but he will refrain from drinking it one day at a time.

I like a joke about drunks as much as the next person. But the first funeral you go to when you hear a grown man sobbing and two teenagers crying uncontrollably because of how bad they feel about telling their mother they hated her a month before she died drunk takes some of the fun out of the laughing- in- the- face- of-buzzkills nature of some of this. A common misconception is that drunks drink to feel good. Drunks end up drinking because they feel like shit when they don't. Then they find out they feel like shit when they do but they can't stop. Who are you going to admit that to if you are someone like Oliver Reed?

The way you're phrasing that makes it sound like you replaced smoking weed with smoking (or sniffing or slamming or boofing or whatever) heroin. If so... I mean, cheers bro. Just don't do it every day, more than once a day. A little heroin in the evening is probably not that terrible for you. Just moderate, you'll be good.
