Al Strobel's performance in "Demons" (S2 Ep6) is amazing and underrated. I really wish this guy got more work. :/

I transcribed this many years ago for my own notes and reference. Sharing: "Fire Walk with Me is hard to look at if you are not prepared to look at a piece of art. It's kind of like if you went into a gallery that was showing some extremely expressionistic works and you were expecting to see English landscapes. And so the critics, who I would think for the most part are educated, intelligent people, couldn't see that this was more a piece of art than it was a movie. The juxtaposition of horror and beauty - which was something I think David strived for there - has an elevating sense that brings out things in your mind and in your heart and in your soul, like a very fine piece of art - painting - does. And the critics didn't see that. And that made me angry because I thought that they would be intelligent enough to do so."

I can understand people being disappointed that the series didn't get a continuation, but at that point, why not just judge Fire Walk With Me for what it is, rather than what it isn't? And the upsetting aspects of the film are what make it such a powerful film and great supplementary material for Twin Peaks. We see dark plot threads taking place before the series, some of which get followed up on with Season 3. And the overall atmosphere of the film, especially during the more disturbing moments, had me glued to the TV the whole time. It's a solid film, even if it wasn't the continuation people were hoping for at the time.

Very well said, and I agree with every word. Critics, while educated and have a good understanding of movies, sometimes just don't get certain movies, mostly unconventional and very different movies. Lost Highway too wasn't that much praised by critics, but I think it's an amazing and fantastically brilliant film. And Fire walk with me is in my opinion a masterpiece. And both those movies weren't praised that much. Shows you that critic's opinions, are sometimes no better than the average normal person. That's why you shouldn't really listen to them, when it's regarding an unconventional, or "weird" film. Sometimes what's important is what artist is actually making the film, and whether you like his style, or if you haven't watched any of his films yet, whether he's praised as a filmmaker in the cinema world.

I agree with him. Sheryl Lee's performance at the very end is so touching and authentic, and it is in such sharp contrast to the awful oddysey that lies behind her. Her performance alone is worth the price of admission. All the other things are so subtle and you have to pay close attention. Critics refused to do that. I remember one critic showed a clip, and then said that he didn't know what the hell that was supposed to mean, and then went on to pan the movie.. Well if you are too busy looking into it, don't say anything at all. FWWM is brilliant.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. However, if you were referencing my comment about Mike being scary before he removed his arm, it had nothing to do with special effects. I was talking about Mike the Black Lodge Demon, to whom BOB was merely a familiar. When he "saw the face of god" he cut off his arm and turned away from evil.

At the End of Fire Walk with me i saw. like in every Lynch Movie, a religeous thing. Laura is guided by this holy person(Cooper) showing her God. And she laughs and crys because she realizes that her suffering has an end.

You implied that an amputated limb couldn't be faked. Lt. Dan's amputated CGI legs were shown in Forrest Gump.

Allow me to elucidate: My Forrest Gump comment related to Lt. Dan's CGI amputated legs. My comment on the nature of Mike related to another comment I made, in which I said that he wasn't scary after he removed his arm. I thought that you had inferred that I meant he wasn't scary because of TP's cheap television SFX, when what I really meant was that he was likely worse than BOB originally. Somehow, the various conversational threads got muddled.

Fire Walk With Me was a bad movie. Pity that this guy, who is a very strong actor and contributes a lot to the Twin Peaks series, has to talk like this about a crappy movie. Twin Peaks was like a 5 course dinner, while FWWM is a blended shake of all those ingredients in smaller quantities. It is an embarrassment to its creators and most of its advocates are simply praising the clothes of the naked king.

peeterpolomaa on the contrary, Fire Walk with me is one of the most underrated films in Lynch production. Most people probably expected some Happy or reassuring ending....It was not the case.

I found FWWM to be pretty powerful. It's darker and more violent than I was expecting and worked well because of that. Lynch didn't let up and the film deserves the praise (although it doesn't seem to get much for some reason).

The English landscapes are in another room from the expressionistic paintings, and the five-course dinners in yet another. They all have their places and unique qualities. And people get different things from different works over the courses of their lives, so you may (or may not!) one day want to revisit the expressionist room. It's all good.
