Thanks for this video my Holzmann lathe (same lathe just red) has developed an issue with some of the gears in the apron, this video was much more informative than the user manual.

Hi, Rober the lower part of the half nut on my machine doesn't engage and I want to remove the apron to have a look. Do I need the same sliding hammer? I have the same machine but from a different brand. Thank you in advance, the disabling video was very helpful.

Hi Daurant, A slidding hammer does make the job much easier to remove the pins, but is not completely a must have. I have once used a small 4mm bolt (This screws in to the pin)about 40mm long and a 10mm nut to get the pins out. It is a hard to explain, but what you do is first put the nut over the pin(yes while the pin is still inside its hole),then a flat washer that has a outside diameter of the same size as the outside of the nut and a inside diameter the size of the threaded part of your bolt(I think its 4mm but might be 3mm), the thicness doesnt matter. This washer sits on top of the nut. Next you start screwing you bolt/screw in to the pin, going tgrough the washer and bolt. After 2-3 full revolutions of the bolt, you want the bolt to start touching the washer and starts getting tight. This is how you determine the lenght of you bolt(The thickness of your nut and washer+ double the diameter of you screw(3 or 4mm which ever it is) . You then carry on tightening the bolt. What is happening at this point is the bolt is being forced down on the washer and nut but it cant go anywhere then its pulling the pin out. Some people call this manually jacking the pin out. Hope my explenation made some sense to you and it help with the romoval..🙂

when are you guys going to tell the factory that theyre machining the tailstocks backwards? every other lathe i have ever looked at or used has the overhang on the headstock end where its needed. just seems to be the al336 that has this peculiar design feature, to have a flush front. effing annoying. not exactly easy to fix, either.

There is a much simpler method of removing the apron gearbox without all the hassle of removing the shaft carrier block, pins and the shafts with it.
