Gotta love when you go tearing into a machine expecting the worst and find it's a simple repair!

Thanks Mark. Good info to know. The great thing about these old machine tools is their simplicity and durability.

I've done that so many times. It gives us a chance to look under the ole girls apron, and makes for another fine video Winky.

Yeah I kinda wanted to see if everything was getting oil. It looked great!

Great repair. It is always wonderful when the fix is easily found and done. Thanks for the video.

I agree. I kind of wanted to see if everything was getting lubricated anyway.

Another great fix Winky. I did not see you replace the split pin when you reassembled the clutch, did you ? Regards from Australia.
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
You are right, I forgot!. If I remove the carriage again I install on. You'd have to unscrew the clutch handle 10 full turns to make this an issue. You were really paying attention!

Excellent preparation. I am working on a SB 15" swing, 6 ft bed from 1935. It is interesting to see how the apron design has varied with time and across models. I also like the chip tray you have built under it. Thanks!
@WinkysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. I think one big change is the use of felt in the oiling system. I have no felts anywhere. I'm on the fence about what is better. I think new felt helps but as the felt gets old and contaminated I suspect it could also stop oil flow. This lathe drips oil a lot which is why I went to the trouble of making the tray. It catches about 99% of the oil that drip and rolls out for cleaning. Of course the storage is also great.
@KevinToppenberg2 жыл бұрын
@@WinkysWorkshop When I get done with my lathe restoration, I was planning on making some sort of chip tray. I had initially planned on making something suspended right under the ways. But your idea, which could include drawers etc, is very intriguing. I'm going to have to decide which way I go. Thanks again!

@@KevinToppenberg Here's a video where I made the cabinet although I suspect you'll need to make it a little different for your lathe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/paDSc6ZoZ9qXh8U

I have a Wade 8a lathe and after about 6 months of owning it i started to have the same issues with the cone clutch. I took it apart several times and reassembled before it finally was fixed. I think my issues were end play ultimately like yours. However, i cant say for sure why its been working for a few years now. I never found any wear on parts or loose nuts, it just works. That is why i think end play. I just happened to tighten things up so the clutch works. Great videos! Thanks
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'd say you are right about the end play.

Simple fix . I like those. Mine is a SB13" (circa 1938)and I have a tooth missing on the bull gear. Not as simple . Found that after I bought it. I enjoy your videos
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
I repaired a bull gear on my Logan. It looks great but I can hear it. I milled a slot and brazed in a slug of steel then milled the profile with a tool fitting to my boring bar in the mill. It was a lot of work but it's good to have the gear functional.

Thanks, I made the pan and cabinet so it rolls out. It's very easy to clean. Thanks on the machine. I got that lathe for one hundred bucks. Of course it did not look like much before I restored it. It was a huge job.

Always nice to get an easy fix. My 17 inch was all apart when I got it. When I went back together I found the lead screw was bent. I straightened it pretty good but it still needs to be worked on some more. I think whoever tore it apart let the weight of the carriage sit on the lead screw and that is how it got bent. Just a guess.....
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a lot of weight, especially out on the end of the screw.

Good editing! I saw you snugged those two carriage screws before installing the square head carriage lock bolt then it appears installed 😄 but not before dismounting the saddle from the carriage ( off camera) it happened to me too.😂

I have a SB10 with a non operating clutch also. Is it possibly to take the apron off by just removing the two slot headed screws on top of the carriage?
@WinkysWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while but I think you remove the lock, and the 2 screws. Then you also have to remove the right side lead screw support. It take thee hands so get help. You have to support the apron so you don't put too much stress on the lead screw but then the apron slides off the end of the lead screw.

I’m seriously thinking of downsizing to that exact lathe. I don’t need 5hp and 15” of swing.

Hey Winky . Was ever wondering - is there only clamping bar in the rear of the carriage that holding it down on the ways? Nothing in front or between ways ? I have SBend 10L , btw
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
No clamping bar in the front. This does seem a little odd but if you think about it all the forces is downward. My Logan has a bar however.

No felts? No reservoir? So you just oil it before and during heavy use? My 1941 -13 had felts and a multi plate clutch. I guess they figure, good enough is good enough.
@WinkysWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
I totally rebuilt this lathe. I had 95% of it apart and i saw no felts anywhere.. no sign of felts. I've looked all over for info on this lathe and can't find any and I can't imagine where these felts would go. I'd like to put them in there if they are supposed to be there but honestly, my Logan has no felts anywhere. I don't really think they are needed although perhaps on the spindle. All the other shafts are fairly low speed.

Now replace all that lube you wiped off everything inside the apron ! Had a circular sawbench with a motor with built in brake. Press the stop button and the amature of the motor slides axially to apply the brake. As it wore in from new, the brake got more efficient - to the point the magnetism of the motor wasn't pulling the brake off to let it start ! So dismantled one end of the motor only to discover the brake was fitted to the other end !
