Man these late 80's arcades were the best. At home the Sega Genesis was coming out the same year as games like this were popping up in arcades. If I had to pick a year gaming hit its peak would be 1989😊

Never played the arcade version. Did own the nes & it was one of my favorites. Just looking at the playthrough I think I prefer the nes. Mainly because different weapons. Each had different ranges & damage amounts. Also different spells instead of just the one. Can't remember if the nes had a usable shield. The graphics were obviously better for arcade. Both had pretty cool enemies & bosses that the other didn't have.

The NES version is actually a better game than the arcade game IMO, it’s just a bit too easy. Legendary Axe for the Turbografx-16/PC Engine, which is also a similar game designed by some of the same devs, is an even better game. If you are looking for something like this but more fun and with a much better balanced challenge, that’s the one to play.

Sorry, but absolutely no innovation or charm in this one. Lots of saturated color. (Although that might actually work against creating a foreboding atmosphere...) Cheaped out on repetitive exolotion animations for all desths, INCLUDING bosses. The soundtrack is just awful (both musically and technically), sound effect samples are ear-piercingly annoying, and the constant note-stealing means the musician needed to better work within the chips' number of channels or demand more channels! Clearly derivative of earlier Rygar/Rastan/Black Tiger/Tiger Road (worse than all), and apparently by the same developer as PCE/TGX Legendary Axe (which DID have better atmosphere & charm, plus great soundtrack!) Thanks for the vid, though!
