Two bordering Southern states in these United States that are about as “Southern” as you can get. One time I mixed them up on a map in a video because my brain messes up sometimes. But yeah, both are in what’s known as the “Deep South,” and unfortunately, both have bad reputations.
When I searched “Alabama jokes” on KZbin, a video about incest was one of the top results. I’m not joking.
Anyway, so while a lot of people joke about how bad they are, in this video I’m taking a serious look at the two states. First of all, Alabama is just slightly bigger than Mississippi. Both have a small border with the Gulf of Mexico. Both have a humid subtropical climate and get A LOT of rain. Both have long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. You are rarely going to see snow in these two states. You will see lots of thunderstorms, and the occasional hurricanes. And surprisingly, some of the worst tornadoes in American history have gone through both states.
Mississippi has a more flat topography compared with Alabama. A big reason why is because Alabama has the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountains.
Alabama has a bigger population. Almost 2 million more people. Both are not that urban compared with the rest of the United States. Jackson is Mississippi’s only city with more than 100,000 people, whereas Alabama has five with over 100,000. Mississippi is also one of the few states in the country that has a shrinking population in recent years.
Alabama residents are older than Mississippi residents, on average. Perhaps because more retirees have recently been moving to Alabama? And they don’t call it the “Bible Belt” for nothing. Both states are religious. 83% of Mississippi residents identify as Christian. In Alabama, it’s 86%. A lot of those Christians identify as Evangelical, and specifically Baptists are the largest Evangelical group in both states.
Both states have a high percentage of African Americans relative to the rest of the country. (26.6% AL, 37.4% MS) In fact, Mississippi has the highest percentage of African American residents of all states in the country.
A big reason why there are so many African Americans in both states is the legacy of slavery. Many of their ancestors were forced to live in this part of the country as slaves. Still, the majority of residents in both states today trace their ancestry to Europe.

You left out one important part of my home state of Mississippi and it's the music. Many famous legends are from or lives in Mississippi such as Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Faith Hill, and a lot more. Despite being ranked lower for education and literature, we also produced numerous literary authors like William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and Tennessee Williams. Living in semi-rural north Mississippi, I can say that there's not a lot of things to do other than live closely in a knit-packed society where people know each other. I recommend looking for Mississippi flag redesigns since we're going to have our 3rd flag redesign next year. i'm from Wisconsin and I went on an interview to Birmingham, AL in 1999. The cab driver, who was black, drove me from the airport to the company in a rural area. I opened my wallet...and I had zero cash. I was so embarrassed. He kindly said that it was okay and wished me luck on my interview. I'll never forget that kindness.

Alabama is one of the most underrated States. It's absolutely beautiful. It ranks number 5 out of all of the other States in species biodiversity. (So many trees, fish, birds etc). It has breathtaking geological diversity too and 70% of the State is forest. As far as the racism stereotypes go, you've got ro remember the South's demographics are far more diverse than something like Montana or Oregon or Iowa etc. Southerners interact and get along with other races on a daily basis.

I've lived in Jackson MS my entire life, apart from college at Ole Miss in oxford, and Jackson has got to be the shittiest capital city in America. We are usually under a boil water notice, and most of the streets are so full of potholes that "lanes" don't really matter. You just do what you can not to hurt your car. There's a lot I love about my state, especially the people, but our public education and infrastructure are fucking terrible. The reason for the declining population is that young people are leaving in droves.

I think Mississippi is easily the most underrated state in the Union. I visited this spring, and it was absolutely beautiful. Contrary to popular belief, I encountered no hatred or animosity from anyone the entire time I was there. Everyone was really friendly; much friendlier than the norm in more northern states.

I'm glad you enjoyed your experience! I highly advise you stay out of both Jackson and Birmingham however. 98% of the rest of both states are wonderful, but both of those places suck. Hattiesburg isn't much better. Tupelo, Tuscaloosa, Columbus, Biloxi, Pass Christian, Oxford, Vicksburg, all wonderful places to visit!

I have spent a great deal of time in Tupelo. I think it has real potential. Many of my friends who were born and raised there don’t see it. It isn’t as pretentious as Oxford, as hick as Corinth or just depressing like Aberdeen or Columbus. The first TVA city and halfway point of the Natchez Trace, I think Tupelo will eventually find what will make it stand out and grow. Perhaps even become Mississippi’s second city over 100,000 (sorry Desoto County and Biloxi/Gulfport)

I find it kind of sad that dispite all the progress my home state of Alabama has made people still assume it's the same as it was in the 60s. Growing up in Alabama, I never really saw it as the kind of racist and bigoted state that many people, especially in my generation Gen Z, make it out to be. Alabama has really come a long way in terms of acceptance and diversity. Everybody jokes about Alabama and says how horrible it is but Alabama is a really underestimated state imo. The state is filled with top colleges and universities such as Auburn University. It has great nationally renowned hospitals such as the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital. It has made huge contributions to the aerospace industry with the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. Not to mention that the University of Alabama and Auburn University are among the top schools in the nation when it comes to college sports, especially football. Add in the fact that it is a very low tax state, it's very business friendly, not to mention we have beautiful beaches and such a vibrant culture (Marti Gras for example started in Mobile not New Orleans), I'd say Alabama is one of the best states to live in.

As a person from Montgomery, Alabama our history(especially my city) is horrible but my city is actually one of the most integrated cities in the country, north side alone(the area I live in) is over 67.9% de-segregated(source is 2010 US census data, I am a GIS analysts for the state). Thanks to the EJI( Equal Justice Initiative) and many other great people we are really trying to make a difference in teaching accurate history of Civil war/civil rights and integration is a huge part of our culture here, I am not hating on other areas of the country but it is really shocking going to places like San Diego or Washington DC and only seeing 1 black person walking around that isn’t working for an entire day(especially out west). Like I said not hating or anything just thought I would share something as a person from the state described in the video...Also Alabama’s unofficial state slogan is “At least we’re not Mississippi”

Mississippi sucking has a lot to do with this little thing called The Civil War. Corinth, MS for example, was a very cosmopolitan town, until the Union decided to all but wipe it off the map. I've lived in both of these states, and both of these states have similar stories when it comes to the Civil War. Towns like Athens, AL were ransacked and destroyed by undisciplined Union troops. In the case of Athens, the commander literally said, "I shut my eyes for two hours" while his soldiers raped, looted and burnt much of the town. I really enjoy it when Northerners, with their "moral high ground" find out that the Confederate Army wasn't nearly as shitty to the towns they went through during Lee's invasion, Sherman was a war criminal, and Lincoln had absolutely no desire to free slaves at all. I realize this video is 2 years old now but I am just now finding your channel. I actually grew up in Fairhope. It def does have some nice spots but growing up there was so little for people to do that most people just got bored. At least that was my experience. It is an absolutely beautiful down that has a long history and some nice beaches but then you have.....the bay and the beach at the bay, Most people go there as a stop on the way to Gulf Shores

I'm not trying to defend George Wallace by any means, but George Wallace initially wasn't a hard-line segregationist. In fact, during his failed run during the Democratic Party primary in 1958, he focused a lot on improving schools/roads, earning him an endorsement by the NAACP. His opponents, well, focused on segregation which drew the endorsement of the KKK. Wallace had even publicly spoken against the KKK and how frustrated he was that people seemed to care more about segregation than improved education/roads. Sadly, he must of thought winning the governorship and personal pride were more important, because during the next cycle he embraced the hard-line segregationist attitude so much so just to win, which he did. It wasn't until the end of his governorship/presidential running attempts that he came out and apologized.

@@williamallen5854 I've lived in Huntsville and Mobile and neither one has the Urban feel of Birmingham, they both feel more town like than a actual city, the metro population of Birmingham is around 1.3 million and as far overall amenities it trumps anything else in Alabama

Mississippi, my home. It had a dark past but I am hopeful for a bright future! I love it here and do my best to make sure I change the mindsets of those who think our past defines our state by being genuine, straight forward, and honest. I’m a Mississippi resident, and I’ve been here my whole life . I love my state , it’s very very beautiful it’s not bad as people try to paint it out to be......but sadly I still run into racists quite often (and I’m not quick to call people racist ), also a lot of people are closed minded . Other than that I would say we’re a good state . Every state has a city that’s known for crime or etc .

The young population of these Deep South states are getting sick and tired of being lumped in with the old generation. Hey! Mississippian here! Gambling spots are legal but only the ingenuous can own and operate on land. Also, Mississppi is the birthplace for American music. The Delta was where blues started predominately by African Americans. Mississippi still has the Indian mound (Nanih Waiyah, MS) owned by the Choctaw Native Tribe. We also have the Natchez Trace which a historic forest trail that is 440 miles long that goes diagonally across Mississippi. I highly reccomend driving on the Trace if you want a slow peaceful drive through nature (its pretty), but keep in mind, there is usually little service on the trace. Mississippi is not great by any means, but we do have a very rich indigenous culture.

Right there with you. Born in Starkville, stayed for about 3 years but was mostly raised by extended family in Birmingham’s suburbs. Went to college in Mississippi (MSU) for 5 years before returning to Birmingham for a little bit. I’ll always claim Mississippi as home, but Alabama isn’t far behind. Both get entirely too much hate for what they truly are. People just need to visit with an open mind and form their own opinion.

I think Mississippi has its fair share of issues, but it's not a bad place to live. I love the people and the food, and I love how welcoming and kind everyone is here. People truly do try their best to include you in things and are always willing to help you. I hate how bad our reputation is amongst other states, when I went to New York for a summer program it took me forever to make friends because so many people assumed I was racist and bigoted, it was a nightmare watching people try to tiptoe around me when all I wanted to do was talk to them.
