Arizona and New Mexico
Two bordering states in these United States. Both are in the heart of the American Southwest.
Both are about the same size...New Mexico is just slightly bigger. However, Arizona has more than three times as many people, and it’s growing at a higher rate. In fact, Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the country, while New Mexico is definitely not.
A big reason why is Phoenix, which is the fifth biggest city in the country. Phoenix attracts all the concerts, all the professional sports teams, all the best comedians, and all the best indie films in theaters that people think they’re cool for seeing.
Arizona also has Tucson, which has a larger metropolitan population than New Mexico’s biggest city, Alburquerque. Still, it has an amazing balloon festival called the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Plus Albuquerque is a way cooler name for a city. I just love saying it.
Both states are known for their deserts, for both are two of the driest states in the country. However, both have these little areas that get higher rainfall due to having a higher elevation.
Due to these elevation differences, both do have some climate variation. I mean, Arizona has the high plateau in the northeast part of the state, the mountainous region that runs from the northwest to southeast, and the low ranges and desert valleys down in the southwestern part. Its biggest desert is the Sonoran. The Chihuahuan Desert is the big one in New Mexico, and it even creeps into Arizona. New Mexico also has the Rocky Mountains in the north, the Great Plains in the east, and basically high plateau throughout the rest of the state. Where the elevation is high, they also tend to get four seasons. Otherwise, folks have been moving to both states for decades due to their mild winters and generally beautiful weather. Or at least snowbirds just head down there for the winter.

So, I live in the Sonoran desert, and this message is for all who are visiting southern Arizona for the first time: Take the amount of water you would normally drink and double it, do not go outside in the summer past 10:00 am, If you get a cactus needle in you, stay calm and pull it out, it is very similar to a splinter but bigger, lastly, if you’re going hiking at any other time than the winter, get a camel pack for your water.

Good to know I have European fans of this series! When I get to comparing Poland, what should I compare it to?
@fclp67
@fclp67 4 жыл бұрын
@@iammrbeat That's a hard question, there's really no country like Poland because we're the borderland between western and eastern Europe, Germany is completely different from us other than the geography which is somewhat similar. We're really the closest to nations like Lithuania, Czechia and Hungary but these nations are way smaller and less populous so comparing them is like comparing maybe Spain and Portugal or Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Romania is a bit closer in size and population and history and economics but the climate is way different and I don't know much about it myself. You could compare Czechia with Slovakia or Lithuania with Latvia or Austria with Hungary but Poland is mostly it's own beast. Technically you could compare with Ukraine but they never had the same level of patriotism and they don't have the western influences which makes them much poorer and more rural.

Resident of Arizona here, It should be noted that Arizona actually was the original, main home of the film industry before Hollywood was even a thing. Almost every western film was made in Arizona, specifically in "Old Tuscon" I have family from New Mexico and I visit there every year for the Zozobra event, the festival is much like burning man but the purpose is more about burning away gloom. Hence why the giant puppet is stuffed with divorce papers, criminal records, and other documents that have a negative purpose to them. I'd also like to tell you about the New Mexico "Meow Wolf" founded by George R.R. Martin (Yes THAT George R.R. Martin) it was an old bowling alley turned into a giant psychedelic story-telling museum that is a must visit! You enter a small 2 story house within the building and to sum it the best I can, you open a fridge and get transported into a rift between realities.

When relocating from the northeast to the southwest, we did a ton of research between AZ and NM. Both states have a lot to offer but the crime in NM is through the roof and seems to be getting worse every year. One very interesting fact about NM that may not have been mentioned in the video is that NM is the only state constitution that is written in 2 languages...... English and Spanish. Great video, thanks for showing all the differences as well as all the similarities between these two states. Well done.

Thanks for doing these awesome videos! As a Canadian we feel we know a lot about your country but getting down to a state-by-state and city-by-city level really helps unearth all the nooks and crannies you only get from living in a country! If I can provide some other states to compare amongst each other, I would pick: - Kansas (your home state!) and Nebraska compared (both big farming states with surprising similarities and differences) - Colorado and Wyoming compared (neighbouring, extremely square states but that's where the similarities end) - Montana and Idaho compared (Rocky Mountain states with really interesting details and stories, similarities and differences) - Kentucky and Tennessee compared (I always think of them as those long, thin states in the south that people forget about) - ENTIRE VIDEOS set aside for Texas and Alaska respectively, they're both too big and interesting and different from everyone else to not examine individually, (arguably the same could be said for Hawaii even though it's not as big) - New York State and California compared (both hold massive metropoles and play an outsized influence on US culture and mindset) - Ohio and Indiana compared, arguably the MOST midwestern states (or Michigan and Ohio given their historic rivalries) Some international ones could also be done! In my home and native land of Canada, comparing the Northwest Territories and Nunavut territory would be interesting, as well as comparing BC and Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and for a little change, compare the two parts of a single PROVINCE - Newfoundland and Labrador, they're so different from one another they barely resemble one another and yet make one administrative province! Keep up the great work Mr. Beat! :D

@@iammrbeat Thanks a lot Mr. Beat!! I'm from Ontario, the most populated province in Canada! We have the biggest city in the Country (Toronto) and the national capital (my hometown, Ottawa!) It's one of the most diverse, largest and most interesting provinces in the country! One other thing to know is when comparing the different First Nations (our word for Native American) peoples in Canada, take some time to focus on it - they're a much bigger part of both our population as a whole and civil society/history here in Canada than in the USA, with dark marks like the genocide of First Nations children in residential schools looming large in our memory. But on a happier note, they also have diverse societies with amazing traditions working on preserving and revitalizing their unique cultures! I hope you take the time to look at this!

Thank you for doing a video comparing the two states. As a New Mexican I had always considered Arizona to be our closest related state considering our cultural ties and several centuries of shared history. While we also have close relationships to Texas, Colorado, and to a lesser extent Utah (part of New Mexico is in the 'Morman belt') I never understood why more KZbinrs spent more time comparing those relations other than our arguably more significant relations with Arizona. I grew up in a small New Mexican town less than 25 miles from the Arizona border and spent a lot of time in both states. My middle and high school sports teams even often played Southwestern Arizona teams and participated in Arizona tournaments. A significant part of our New Mexico history textbooks discussed events that took place in current day Arizona as for a long time Nuevo México controlled Arizona and events that took place there had a significant impact on our state as well. Ultimately our too states grew up to be very different, but we're eternally entwined and cannot deny being very much related to each other.

I’ve lived in Arizona since 94 and have travelled extensively through both states. I’m beyond impressed with your analysis and breakdown of both places. These are some of the most beautiful spots on the planet. It’s a geological wonderland out here so the elevation changes bring so much ecological diversity. Now we need to protect that diversity before the growing number of humans here exhaust finite resources. We are going to be facing water shortages in the next 20 years. Water is the biggest topic of the next 100 years in my opinion, and if we aren’t more careful we are gonna have a lot of ghost towns scattered throughout the southwest. NM is a place you go to retire whereas places like Scottsdale/Tempe has decent nightlife for the younger crowd. More recreational activity in the metro PHX area too such as Camelback and Piestwa Peak. NM nightlife is almost non existent especially since the past several years, many places have closed. I love home but I left for a reason.

New Mexican here! New Mexico has 2 national research laboratories as well (which explains our highest PhD per capita ranking). And the Atomic Bomb as also created and detonated for the first time in New Mexico. #GoLobos #BooAggies

I'm from New Mexico, my Grandfather whom passed away was from here too, yet he moved from New Mexico, to Colorado, and ultimately lived most of his life in Arizona. His father before him was from Illinois, and before that was from Italy. My grandfather was a hero of mine. We would also banter about which was best "Arizona or New Mexico", I distinctly remember at one point him acknowledging that New Mexico is better. I would suggest to you, because of our values, heritage, and cultural diversity, and FOOD. New Mexico is better! 😍😉♥️

Hey all! Im a local Las Crucen for about the last nine years and I can comment on a few things. One thing that has helped the state a lot is the film and commercial space tourism industry's. Here in the very most southern part of New Mexico a lot of people come out to see the White Sands national monument and Orgon Mountain range as both are great out door adventure areas! We are about 30 minutes from El Paso Texas and three hours away from the Arizona border. Oh and you mentined Zozorba. Well New Mexico is very art centeric and Zozorba is our version of "Burning Man" On August 30th this past year they broke the attendance record with over 60,000 people at Zozo at fort Marcy park. oh and if you EVER come to New Mexico...Go to Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. Trust me.

Meow wolf in Santa Fe is indeed awesome. Better than the vegas Meow wolf one for sure. Visited NM a few years back, did a road trip all over the state. National Parks and monuments, cities, etc. And wow land of enchantment is true. I was enchanted, loved the state.

Here in New Mexico we have Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, Los Alamos National Labs in Los Alamos and White Sands Missile Range. A lot of energy research takes place at Sandia Labs. Nuclear research takes place at Los Alamos (Where the world's first nuclear bomb was produced). The first atomic bomb was tested at the Trinity site near White Sands. A lot of missile and space research and testing occur at White Sands. There is also the International Space Port near Truth or Consequences for the launch of space tourism.
